Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

"end of the year" doesn't make sense with Kotaku article.

An PS4 4K APU on 2016?

A 16nm Polaris based APU becoming widely available for both Microsoft and Sony could be a huge determining factor here. Doesn't it seem a bit strange that Microsoft would be talking about iterating more frequently and now Sony is doing just that?

I honestly don't know how they are going to release anything slimmer than the ps4, especially if we're talking about beefier gpu here which typically would mean more wattage and more heat.

PS4K may very well be the actually name, has a good ring to it, market it it the the high end segment and also has 4k blu ray support. Samsung is selling a stand alone Bluray player from $399. Sony very well might release this at $599.

By 'slim' I meant an upgraded console, not literally slimmer.

Yes Sony, yes!!!

I would love this. Make ps like ios devices

Suddenly bloodborne runs perfectly on the next ps iteration, just imagine

And YOUR Playstation runs newer games worse and worse, pushing the message in your face to buy the latest revision!

PC gaming, this is. You really want that?

This isn't a portable with a low upgrade cost. Even then the new3ds was just... I don't see myself supporting consoles anymore if both Sony and Microsoft go along with these updated console plans.

End of the year you say?

I expect a hardware revision especially one that incorporates the VR box inside.

I don't think I could afford
well twist partners arm
a ps4 that was just an updated version.

E3 will be very interesting to say the least!

ugh this is lame
i hope this isn't where the console business is headed
its like a gimped pc. none of the benefits of a real closed system like a console, but none of the benefits of a real pc

Feel the same. For me one of the biggest advantages of consoles was that you didn't need to upgrade every few years. Also I have hard time believing this 4k talk when PS4 struggles even with 1080p/60fps.

I don't have a hard time believing it now that we know AMD and Nvidia are moving to finfet tech, meaning consoles can pack r9 nano spec chips into little tiny boxes and still meet TDP/heat thresholds. Granted I still think this whole thing is bunk.. unless there is a external GPU upgrade incoming a la AMD's Xconnect.

even if this is not true, future console gens are going to be more iterative and not revolutions like the generations of yore.

There is absolutely no need for any of the players to go for another "reset" when they can just iterate on their current userbase.

Especially Sony, who is firmly market leader, has no interest to start from zero again.

Im realy confused why people are so upset about this. Do you think that there are going to be games that will only run on this console or something?

Realistically the games in development right now and at least for the next year or so are too far along even if the devs wanted to update them to a higher spec.

So this PS4k will just

:- Uprez content that will still work fine on your launch console.
:-Include the breakout box already available for your Launch console.

Really its just a slim. Especially if they launch it at $299

end of the year

I agree that it feels weird right now, but it makes sense with the rest of tech upgrades.

If true, it might follow what they did with the PSP where they had a more capable version but the extra power was mostly to beef up OS features and when their base of upgraded PSP install base got high enough they allowed devs to use a higher clock. Would a new version be fore more robust OS PSVR features?

That said, when I talked to devs who weren't aware of it, they just sighed.

Yeah, that's probably why I'm skeptical. It doesn't help their publisher partners or the people who bought the current PS4. Just more work and more money to spend to play.

Whats the end of the year though? It get announced or comes out? Announcement incomming at E3?

I don't think this will be a 4K box in the sense of playing Uncharted 4 or Horizon at 4K, but like Obliterator said the new box might allow for smaller games (like Salt & Sanctuary for example) to run in 4K. It will get pushed as the PS4 Slim along with PSVR in the holiday season.

That's not how it works. Just because you have better hardware doesn't mean games tuned for an older platform will simply run better. Bloodborne's frame pacing isn't going to magically change.

This is the thing that separates consoles from PCs: Fragmentation!

If they would add updated hardware, in the end you would have games not performing the same on every device, and in the end you would have a market like on iOS.

Just look at that iPhone disaster. You have games that run differently on different devices and some games don't even run at all unless you get the new device.

This is SHIT. Consoles are here to keep users away from that trouble. And now Sony want to embrace that? Can't see that happening.

Comparing a potential console market of subsequent hardware revisions directly to iOS is disingenuous.

Sony have always had strict software compliance, and I sincerely doubt that would change at all. Also, we aren't looking at hundreds of different configurations here, we are looking at 1-2 different setups at first, with that number potentially ballooning up to 5-10 over the next 10 years.

This number is a drop in the bucket compared to the current compatibility testing a PC game has to go through, where you are literally looking at hundreds, if not thousands of different configurations. This would be very manageable, especially if most companies plan on doing PC ports anyways.

Not only smart, but necessary as we are in 2016. I want games to work like movies, tv shows and music, god dammit!

Exclusives don't sell consoles anymore. 3rd party games are the king of the hill now.
I don't see PC versions of Bloodborne, Infamous, Killzone having a big impact on console sales and if so...who cares. Sony will sell more games. I was addressing this idea in many Nintendoomed threads: What's the point of selling 12 mio. WiiUs and 8 mio. copies of MK8 if Nintendo could sell 20+ mio. copies of MK8 across all plattforms?

And let's not forget...Sony is also in the movie business, so a subscription service that runs on various devices would be a clever way of earning some extra cash.

Can I hug you? That is exactly how I feel about it. Everything you said in that quote.

(I'm a fan, hi.)

Just sounds very odd from a business perspective. The NEW 3DS is experiencing the problems of a more capable SKU being largely ignored.

There isn't anything fundamental that has changed in the business so why would Sony want to push this? MS is toying with the Idea because they're behind but what would Sony gain unless it's just a 'reaction' to MS if they too pull the trigger.

I know you would have confirmed with 2 sources and l tried to clarify but it just seems like a inexplicably bad business move for both.

What I'm thinking with these upgrade units is that while the PS4 and PS4.5 are out, devs make games with the PS4 in mind, and the 4.5 owners get those games at higher resolutions and framerates. As the years go on, devs start focusing game development on the 4.5, and leaving behind the 4 owners. Sorta like how devs act when transitioning to a new hardware gen.

As this is happening, with exclusive experiences being made on the PS4.5, Sony releases the PS5, having the PS4 made obsolete, and those users migrate to the PS5. PS5 would run PS4.5 games better, and would have exclusive games by Sony/AAA to encourage users to upgrade to the PS5. PS4.5 users don't need to upgrade just yet as they know a PS5.5 will come out and they are getting most of the games the PS5 is getting, just running worse.

It'll turn into a cycle of X > X.5 > X2 > X2.5, with X being made irrelevant once X2 is out, and X1.5 being made obsolete once X2.5 is out. Still the same "cycle" of when to upgrade hardware, but now with a mid gen upgrade that you can jump into if you so choose.

I, like allot of people, dont own a 4K tv. So yeah 4K is not important. Resolution and graphical changes are different thing you know. Higher res textures, anti aliasing, physics enhancements. The usual PC options are what i mean when i say graphical upgrades. Also frame rate. If its just 4K than i could not care less.
