Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

Until you realize it'll run Bloodborne and Bloodborne 2 at 60fps...

I just can't buy into this upgraded model for end of year 2016 thing. It's just not feasible for Sony to put in an APU that does "4k gaming" this year. Sure, even the PS4 as it is could do 4k on some smaller titles, but they just don't have what's needed for that on a large scale. It makes no sense at all to expect them to build an AP capable of that any sooner than late 2018 at the very earliest.

And even if they could get an absolute MONSTER APU in there somehow this year it would be completely against Sony's current mandate of selling hardware at a profit. Something like this could only be done at a *massive* loss if they were selling it at a price people would actually buy it at. The logistics just don't match up at all.

Minor revision for HDMI2.0 and other small stuff just makes the most sense to me.

This wouldn't mean games would stop releasing on PS4, the PS4.5 would play the exact same games, they'll just look or run better on the new hardware.

The thing is they just bought them if they had know they would just wait and have better experience. If PS4.5 is true I think customers buying PS4 this year are getting a very bad deal not knowing it.

Yeah this just dosen't add up. E3 this year will be insane.

Could be also a simple statement towards nostalgic IPs that are coming back...
You know, the year of dreams as many people said after last years E3 and all those nostalgic reveals.

Sounds vastly more correct than a hint towards something people wouldn't be able to grasp anyway.

So what happens when the PS5 comes out? Surely PS5 games wouldn't be backwards compatible with the 4.5. Are you willing to spend several hundred dollars for something that would be obsolete when the next generation starts in a few years?

If this rumor is true you can just throw the idea of generations out the window. Each new piece of hardware will be an upgrade of the last one.

The only thing that scares me about this, if true, is how far out would that push the PS5? I hope we aren't in for another 8+ year generation.

#TeamPS5 All-InOrDon'tBother.

A rose by another name is still a rose. If it is really called PS4.5 it's a sign of a new upgrade model. Where games are made to target the entire family of "PS4" systems. Through this model than can upgrade the PS more quickly. No need to leave 5-8 to compete a gen. They can put out a new hardware upgrade every 2-3 years. But if a game targets the PS4's then no matter what model you have, you can guarantee the game will run. Even if with a lower fidelity.

I've been thinking about this all day and I think I'd be down for it depending on the price. I imagine 4k would be limited to lower budget indie stuff while AAA games could actually aim for 1080p/60.

If anything this will ensure that the PS5 will be fully backwards compatible with the PS4. They will simply put in a bigger and better GPU and CPU with the same x86 architecture.

And yes, I am willing to spend $400 on a console that wont struggle to run games at 1080p and 30 fps like the PS4 does now.

Actually, if i trade in my PS4, i will only have to spend $200. I can either do that or spend $1,300 on a brand new to play games at 1080p and 60 fps or a res higher than 1080p.

All this is gonna do is make PC gaming look even better than it already is. This is why I doubt Sony will do incremental upgrades. Part of the reason consoles work is because you are essentially getting a bargain on custom PC parts + exclusive software (kinda not the case in present times).

But now with this? 4k gaming? Do they realize the cost of parts necessary to pull something like that off? Buying a PC and upgrading said PC is literally the smarter route.

In case you didn't notice: I REALLY HOPE SONY DOESNT DO THIS. I will be so sad if this is true. I don't know, man. It is all speculation, but I hope it doesn't happen. Please, Sony!

incremental/mid-gen upgrades is going to be a double-edged sword and it's gonna be very easy to hit ourselves in the face with it.

So the alternative is to stand pat with Nintendo while their competitors offer consumers more options while filling a proven demand? The reasons I'm hearing against this make me wonder how some people ever bring to themselves to purchase a piece of technology that's not a console, because the next best thing is ALWAYS around the corner.

And if the day comes when Sony releases games that exceed the the OG PS4's capabilities, upgrade or deal with it. Those games wouldn't be on the that hardware whether Sony provided a stronger alternative that could play them or not.

There are no generations no more, only hardware revisions with newer, more powerful hardware whenever it seems right enough to do while maintaining a reasonable price point. This inside the same X86 architecture. The Playstation is a branded PC associated to a closed software ecosystem.

why did you wait this long?

this product isnt for you. its for early adopters who care for the latest and greatest in tech.

if you really care about this then just return your PS4. pay the 15% restocking fee and wait for the latest model.

Well, at least for my case: I bought the PS4 when it was released but last summer I had to sell it for some reason. Just bought another one 2 weeks ago, and to me 400$ isn't little money... So I'd feel bitter if it turns out to be true.

Also it would be weird to lauch it at the same time than the PSVR, 1 year before yes, 6 months before yes, but at the SAME TIME, I mean they expect people to spend 1000$ just like that? I know Sony is popular but not THAT popular, the last time they tried those kind of tricks (launch of PS3), wasn't a good time for them...

If this is true, it will follow the "mobile upgrade format" if it is proven to be successful. Expect a hardware refresh every 1-2 years...

I really hope this isn't true. The PS4 is good as it is!
Leave the "upgrading" to the PS5.
Besides, I don't want a new friggin' model every 1-2 years! Proper next-gen upgrade every 5 years or so - As it should be!

Going hand-in-hand with the previous model releasing in slim and cheaper version, the new .5 upgrade is released simultaneously for a premium price.

In this day and age, I don't think the PC is all that cheaper hardware wise. It really is the difference in game prices that get you.

Even Sony's VR solution is going to be cheaper. Bumping up hardware to support 4K in an incremental cycle, and you still get the benefits of a dedicated console. Look, I'm a big PC guy. But this move my Sony only seems like it can be a good thing. Just because it isn't a full out PC model doesn't mean ware are getting a worse deal. It's consoles starting to be an even better deal.

Think people too hung up on the 4k thing. It'll be able to play games at 4k, but that doesn't mean there will be a ton of games at 4k, like how last gen there were many 720 and under games even though the consoles could run at 1080p.

This shit makes me nervous. I would have to get one because i have a great 4k TV. Hopefully they don't screw us, and make it easy to get one. Otherwise its gonna flop hard.

But that still doesn't make any sense. There are literally no current gen games that could run at 4K on any consumer GPUs priced anywhere near what they'd be introducing a console at - so then what's the point? Indies? The Trine devs already said that they could've had Trine 2 running at 4K on current PS4 hardware. It just doesn't make any sense.

It has to be. All signs are pointing toward moving away from traditional console lifecycles. Cutting off support for one platform in favor of the new one is part of that IMO. I agree, who is going to pay several hundred bucks for a brand new console, sit around for years for awesome AAA games, get smacked with a few additional delays, finally get a few great games, and then be told to buy the new platform and repeat that process? Not me. This gen is already bad enough, far too many studios still haven't even released a game. Consoles have to evolve and adapt to these ridiculous development times.

You don't see how a fully upgradeable PC is a better deal vs a PC that cannot be upgraded until the manufacturer sells you a whole new one?

This new console would be a worse deal for sure, imo.
