What is the epitome of bad or generic anime?

Sword Art Online.

It had like, EVERYTHING I fucking loathe about Anime, including undeserving popularity. Fucking TRASH writing and absolutely stupid characters, a half decent idea squandered on horseshit.

Oh and don't forget a halfway decent first episode that tricks you into the thought that it wont go to shit by ep 3.

Fuck Sword Art Online and fuck Anime.

I wouldn't call it generic, but you would be hard pressed to find any greater train wreck of an anime. Trying to be deep in it's storytelling every choice made by the creators is just bad.

It does have some payoff, as someone decided "to hell with it" in the last few episodes and made one of the most hilariously bad endings to an anime I have ever seen.

Rail Wars

I will never stop disliking this show.

This so much. The setting sounded interesting. And I sorta liked the main characters (well not the crappy waifu bait and beta MC; the vest guy and gun chick were pretty cool)

Bleach is not the most generic shounen, that's Fairy Tail, Bleach is arguably a worse show but Fairy Tail wins in being a shounen trope factory.

Oh yes, absolutely this.

Early Fairy Tail is actually pretty okay (and does some unique stuff like having a far more powerful character resolve one of the arcs instead of the MC) but past a point it just devolves into the most shonen-y shonen ever

i feel like a lot of people here don't watch enough anime if you think some of these are 'generic'

Look no further than last season's Asterisk War. It follows typical LN anime tropes:

- New guy enters school for gifted children, the school is a battle school
- Before he even starts his first day he walks in/sees a girl in her underwear changing for the day
- The girl gets flustered and screams, more likely calling the lead a pervert.
- She gets extremely angry and challenges him to a fight.
- Said female character is either a princess or known as a princess. A character that doesn't have many friends due to being cold, but a beauty nonetheless all the guys want to get close to. She's known as either the strongest or one of the strongest fighters in the school.
- During the fight the princess is cocky and ultimately the lead beats her because he's actually really fucking strong.
- The lead has now caught the eye of a bunch of people, including a student council who are likely some of the strongest people in the school too.

The only other way this could be more generic is if it had started with:
- Lead walking to school, passes a street crossing, girl with toast in her mouth is running and crashes against him. He lands on her boobs or she lands with her boobs on his face.
- Gets called a pervert.
- Lead gets introduced to class as the new kid and the girl is SURPRISE in his class, stands up from her desk pointing at him going "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh?!"

Bleach was fun at the start, the manga at least, but it dissolved after the first couple big arcs.

Fair Tale probably gets my vote. There's probably worse, but out of the big names, it's easily the most derivative and generic.

Fuck how did I forget Fairy Tail.

All the women but the loli's are F-Cups, the power of friendship, the fights involve more exposition and move calling than actual fighting, the setting is as generically high-fantasy as you can get, it's got love triangles up the yang.

It's generic tropes personified.

From ones I've seen, I'll go with Infinite Stratos. Super generic harem anime. Has all the stereotypical female archetypes, and the MC encompasses a few himself. Some generic mecha stuff in there, too.

I've seen worse, but those were so generic their titles have been permanently wiped from my memory.

Edit: If you want to watch a somewhat good generic anime, I thought Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple was a nice shounen fighting anime.

Man, someone RECOMMENDED me infinite stratos like it was some good stuff and I wonder how high they were. A more generic harem anime I could barely find in my mind

Charlotte was kinda the only redeeming factor for m

Dont forget the main character always is the underdog and gets hyped up at the end of the fight and yells loudly and somehow beats the badguy

Bleach is actually a good anime IF you stop after the Soul Society arc like I did. I just pretend the rest doesn't exist, hah. The first story arc of Sword Art Online was at least interesting enough to make want to tune in the next week, the 2nd arc and 2nd season are just plain awful. I got fed up with the Mary Sue/Gary Stu's when the plot started sucking beyond belief and the inclusion of Japanese younger sister incest trope, ugh...

Sword Art Online. It could have been somewhat redeemed had the pacing been better. The first episode was pretty good, and then it fell off a cliff.

It's tempting, but I wouldn't go for Bleach, since it was actually kind of good for the first few arcs. You'd have to spend a good deal of your time before getting to the pure, raw shit of it, which kind of makes it hurt even more.

That show about the girl otaku that wants to bang her brother that the weebs can't help but post enough gifs from that even I know what the show is about now.

Bingo.

The Asterisk War, there's a VIDEO SERIES about how bad it is.

There's people talking shit about Hunter x Hunter in this thread?

what
the
fuck

It's the best shonen anime ever made(and the 2011 version is amazing quality wise for a 100+ ep anime) and the golden standard that most anime can't even dream to reach.

But that also describes DBZ, and Yu Yu Hakusho, and Yu-Gi-Oh, and most Gundam series, and, well...vrtually every Shonen anime.
Not to the level that Bleach relies on fights where it's an endless cycle of perfect counters until the fight has gone on for 5 too many chapters and it's ended so the next drawn out fight can start.

One thing to note is that, as the last two videos of the previously linked "Why The Asterisk War Sucks" series point out, there was another series that aired at the same time that started in almost exactly the same way and continued to have similar characters and story beats, Chivalry of a Failed Knight. However, despite having the exact same cliches at the start, it was demonstrably better than Asterisk War--the difference between a 1/10 and a 3/10, mind, but still better. So even beyond being cliched, Asterisk War is low quality.

Actually, a lot of Yu Yu Hakusho fights are resolved from quick-witted plans. Yeah, through the story, the characters become stronger, but that is often not why they win.
