What is the epitome of bad or generic anime?

Thanks to all of you for reminding me how bad this medium has become.

... I take it many people haven't actually seen truly bland anime here before.

*cries*

It hurts because I'm a Gunslinger Stratos fan, but anime was just sooooo bland, incomprehensible plot, completely disposable, meaningless, and generic characters...

Bad is probably like, Bible Black or something.

Mediocre is like....maybe Attack on Titan.

I'd say Bleach and Sword Art Online are firmly in the below average camp where they're both bad but also both not literally the worst things ever.

As someone who has read the entirety of the Bleach manga, it's pure shit. But a lot of the worst shit happened in the current arc that hasn't been adapted or the Fullbringer arc which nobody gave a shit about. The Bleach anime is also better than the manga since it vastly improves fights, pacing, and art (Backgrounds exist!) so that might skew perceptions

I never got very far into it but when I say it's "not the worst thing ever," I meant it's like not as bad as joke-tier shows like Bible Black or Boku No Pico or whatever.

I see a lot of people also caught the dub of SAO. I felt the sub was really good. That anime isn't on the list of ones that has a strong dub (only few successful dubs out there).

Uh no. SAO has a really good dub with strong performance. That doesn't save shitty writing.

See that's your problem. Bleach is decent to good up until the end of soul society. It doesn't get mired in the sea of shit it ends up in until later. Bleach is fucking awful from every storytelling perspective. It might not be sexual garbage or something like that, but it's pure trash from pretty much every other perspective by the time you get to where it is now

With your own words, why do you think is good?

Well, I wish I wasn't on my phone, but in short; it was the first series I ever watched. It had, action, adventure, romance, marriage, hardship and emotion. I watched it with no preconceived notion of what was good or bad, so it was easy to enjoy it when watching with an open mind; it was just a fun series to watch. Even now, after watching hundreds of different series, it's very difficult to match the rush I got watching the show, especially the first season. I was expecting to enjoy it in the first place, but it blew my mind when watching it (damn gateway drug.)

Now is it my favorite anime now after watching so many others? nope. Does it have issues, yup, but I guess I'm able to accept things on a more face value level and enjoy it for what it is. Something like Clannad/ Clannad After Story is by far my favorite since I connected with that show in so many ways once it got to After Story. I guess that's what being a father of daughters does to you, lol. Ok, that's enough for tonight, if you want "bad" anime, I could give you a list of shit that is much MUCH worse than SAO, LOL.

We could also have a similar thread about tv shows, book and movies and rattle off a bazillion cookie-cutter or poorly written series in every medium.

That said, the magical high-school LN adaptions need to stop.

Bottom of the barrel generic or bad romcom it is not. I honestly don't know if people are being sarcastic here or what.
It's self-insert crud. It's fine to like it, I mean I like Dragon Ball Super and that's so bad, but it's not exactly quality yo.

Feels like most of the popular ones I've sampled lately have the same common tropes that I can't separate from "generic". But maybe it's not really it that bothers me. Maybe a lot of the formula has just become predictable, and I'm just sort of looking for something that will finally surprise me.

Sword Art Online > Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Mostly because Shinji makes Kirito look like Guts.

The problem with Kirito is how perfect he is and he has no flaws, so he's fucking boring.

I get the hate Shinji gets for NOT GETTING ON THE FUCKING robot, but that's like... the whole point. He isn't supposed to be like other MCs that are perfect, Shinji has deep issues, he feels unloved, he's god damn scared which MAKES SENSE, and has no motivation to do shit.

i love sword art online! is it really considered that bad? i liked the whole
aid
s storyline and thought that was very well done

Thanks to all of you for reminding me how bad this medium has become.

You can say this about every single medium.

Makes me kinda glad I stopped trying to keep up years ago...

WTF!!

every medium has tons of crap, anime of course has TONNNSSSS of shit, but as someone that really enjoys anime a lot I gotta say that every single season has some amazing anime that is worth watching.

You should all be watching Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju right now basically.

I would honestly rather watch Sword Art Online rather than half the shows on real tv

Honestly, same.

Last things I've watched and enjoyed were panty and stocking with garterbelt and Attack on titan, titan feels like it will either go somewhere awesome. or awful no middle ground.
PS&G was great though...

You know Its no even because Kirito is a Gary Stu why I hate him, he's just so painfully generic..I mean Technically Akagi is a Gary Stu too (probably more of a magnificent bastard actually) but I love him regardless.

I also agree with the guy above on Flame of Recca, interestingly enough i really like the manga for it

The Blue Exorcist movie had beautiful art in it, and was kinda charming imo. (Never watched the TV series)

BLEACH is just...i dont know, only could watch like 16 episodes before the premise got old[/QUOTE]

The first 16 episodes of Bleach has a different premise than the ones that followed.

Also Aizen and various Kubo fuckery redeems Bleach.

Even if series like Naruto and Bleach are messy and relatively uninspired compared to One Piece or Hunter x Hunter, there are series that are to them what they are to those series. There are series that never make magazines at the level of Shonen Jump or do not last long under it.

Epitome of "anime" doesn't make sense without first qualifying it with shonen fighting, romance harem, etc. The light novel adaptations seem to be in their own game as well.

EDIT: I guess I'm not taking filler into consideration, since I'm always thinking in reference of manga.

EDIT: 666 Satan, for example, is much more generic than Naruto. It looks like a copycat in comparison, although it was oddly enough done by the twin brother of Naruto's author.

Panty and Stocking was hit and miss depending of the episodes, and Attack on Titan is not that great.

There are masterpieces out there, I sometimes don't agree but see GAFs top ten anime of the year and you'll find some GREAT anime to watch.

I ALREADY did this recommendation but here are some anime that is fantastic:

Space Brothers
Chihayafuru
Shirobako
HunterxHunter

If you want something more recent that was rather popular then check out One Punch Man, but just take in account that it's basically making fun of shonen anime by having an MC that can defeat everything in a single punch, it has some fanservice with the ONE female character that matters in the anime so beware.

The Blue Exorcist movie is incredible. Some of the best backgrounds ever, and a sweetly effective story.

If you like Attack on Titan, have you heard about Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, the shameless Attack on Titan ripoff that the Attack on Titan anime team is making?

Will investigate, tyvm....also movies? much more digestible for me, rather than getting sucked into too many random series at once.

I'll be honest I'm not the best at recommending anime movies but I can at least attest to the greatness of Wolf Children and Summer Wars.

SAO is great until they completely ruin the entire premise halfway through the first season. They could have easily went far deeper with that concept, and showed more aspects of daily life for people trapped inside that game world.

That's all I wanted from it. A series taking place over 2 years that illustrated what life would be like trapped in a game.

Log Horizon but with stakes of death and not being trapped in a world that was a video game but is now real.

Shame we just got what we got.
