Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

Maybe I just have no imagination, but I'd like to see more "humanoid" races. Where are my alien hotties?
Don't post that fennec pic

Yeah it's my only disappointment with the portraits, I've always liked humanoid aliens like in the style of Star Trek.

It'll definitely happen though, Paradox loves their cosmetic/graphical DLCs like portraits which I don't mind buying since they're also really cheap (assuming similar prices like CK2).

How did I miss this Cthulhu looking thing?

They're perfect for my eventual militaristic 2nd playthrough. They kinda remind me of those dudes from Stargate Universe

The wait until may 9 is going to be unbearable. I tried to play Gal Civ III earlier... just couldn't do it. Maybe SotS will do a better job tiding me over.

Yeah, I was really excited about gciv III before sitting down with it but when I finally did it made me realise how much 4x fatigue I have.
It's not terrible game but it's not very remarkable or unique either.

One of the reasons I'm excited about Stellaris is because it's not afraid to shake things up: it's not exactly like any of Paradox's other games (it obviously borrows a lot from them though) and it's not like any other 4x out there either.
Playing gciv III and looking at the upcoming MOO make me feel like I've played those games a thousand times before.... because I have, Stellaris on the other hand feels fresh and exciting.
MOO has voice acting going for it at least though. Michael Dorn is dreamy.

I usually try not to hype myself up before stuff gets released but so far it's hitting all the right buttons for me.

I'm just curious how ship designing, fleet management, and the galactic casus belli system will work in full games. I guess it'll be similar to Paradox's other titles, but I can also envision it working badly if it's more 4X-like, where it's more about snowballing troops and victories, or losing everything and being rather boned.

That reminds me, is there some kind of attrition system for fleets? Movement type or something? I only watched half of a presentation, so maybe I missed it.

Hmm, I don't think they've talked about fleet management or attrition yet, but...

Ship design

and

War & peace

have been covered :D

Hmm interesting, I thought you could only have a total of 4 traits.

I think you can choose up to 4 and inherit another "tolerance" trait based on the type of planet you start with.

Looks like the game is up for preorder on Amazon in Germany and comes with the soundtrack and the "Human Diversity" content package. I'm curious what all that will entail.

Those dev diaries are really good. I should really read more of them...

Thanks for the links, Poddlestrike.

All of the humans in the pre-release stream I watched were sorta tan in colour with brown hair. I imagine the cosmetic DLC would mix things up a bit.

During that same stream, the lead designer mentioned that he expects most players to use humans, so yeah.

New Dev Diary!

Dev Diary 26: Migration, Slavery & Purges

Hi folks!

It has been a very busy week for yours truly, with a load of press demos and, of course, the grand Paradox press conference in San Francisco. Meanwhile, the rest of the team has been hard at work finishing up the revised start-up screens, but that’s not what I’m going to talk about today… Instead, through the confused haze of my jet lag, I thought I’d say a few words about how to manage your population in Stellaris! As you might recall from the dev diary on Policies and Edicts, your initial choice of Empire ethos will heavily affect what you can and cannot do and what your initial population will tend to frown upon. Three of the more interesting Policies concern Migration, Slavery and Purges.

Now I want to make a race of long-lived rapid breeders, negotiate as many open immigration policies as I can and let my race spread through the galaxy. I wonder if them being purged by another empire gives a CB against them...

From the dev diary thread, having pops in other places doesn't so much give you CBs (though in your scenario it might) so much as greatly reduce the cost of wargoals. So claiming a planet your pops are on is cheaper.

Nice, some options to be a real menacing empire of you want to go down that route. Although for my first game I feel more compelled to go down the super all open migration and xenophile route and see how long before my federation falls apart.

Man, I am actually considering a pre-order which is kind of crazy with Paradox games (have bought pretty much everything eventually starting with EU2).

This is by far the game I am looking toward to in the next few months.

Reinstalled EU 4 , remembered how utterly lost I get, hype for Stellaris somewhat diminished.

I love the scale of these games but fuck me everything is so poorly explained.

Grand strategies are tough to get into but the devs said they have made it more accessible by also doing way better explanation/tutorial for the game. You can get an adviser that pops up while you play that explains the game.

Also, Quill18 in the last few days have done a non-DLC up-to-date EU IV tutorial where he explains a whole lot of the most important things you need to know regarding how to play the game, such as explaining essentially everything you need to know about trade. If you're interested in watching it'll be a big help. I know it sucks that the game doesn't explain the core basics well but this is the most up-to-date vanilla help on the game you can get.

The last time I pre-ordered a Paradox (published) game I got shit on. That was a 4X too! Though Paradox as devs do seem slightly more capable.

Thanks, I'll check these out.

Those robot dudes at 2:17 look a lot like the geth, at least from as far as I can tell considering the size and the picture quality.
I wonder if all robots are going to look the same or if the different spiecies types make different looking robots too.

It's tough to say, but they didn't look that Gethlike to me. Big columnar heads.

For launch at least I expect all robots will look the same, maybe with a fleshed out AI races/technologies DLC somewhere down the road shaking things up.

Stellaris’ endgame may make it the best 4X ever
Paradox are also considering something involving the game’s fallen empires, the classic trope of the decayed super-species that once ruled the stars but now only have a handful of worlds. Either one of these races will decide to kick themselves back into gear and come charging out of their peaceful regions in technologically superior ships - or two will, going to war with one-another over ancient feuds, with you and any other cowering mortal races rather stuck in the crossfire.
*drool*

These scenarios are meant to function as boss battles of sorts. A final confrontation with something similar to what you’ve faced before, but on a whole new scale, with deadlier weapons and bigger plans. They’ll require changes in tactics and be quite challenging to defeat, and there’s more to come. Anward describes a third scenario where a race might arrive from a different galaxy, deciding that the lifeless husks they’d left behind in conquering and eating their various neighbours weren’t particularly entertaining anymore, and you/your stars are “looking tasty”.

Oh shit we Tyranids now.

I think this is the first time that particular endgame risk has come up, btw. Was beginning to get worried they'd all be stuff like the Jump Drive and AI example, where you inevitably have to research your own potential destruction. Glad to see some variety.

They shouldn't have told us that, that would have been a amazing game surprise when it happened but hot damn that is amazing. Endgame is normally shit in these games, now we have crazy shit like dimension tearing science, replicator rampant A.I and other potential civ ending techs.

These guys have gone to the extreme, if we come across the necron then game over man, this game becomes king of the genre.
