Star Ocean 5 character gets less-sexy underwear 'in Fear of Western Criticism'

"Regarding Miki, it's been pointed out overseas that "it's not good for teens to wear sexual underwear," so we've increased the surface area of the cloth."

Indeed, that translation is a bit wonky all over the place.

The "teenager" confusion might arise from the fact that Japan doesn't view people as adults until 20. But I could be wrong.

Not really confusion. You're a "teen" until 20 in every country.

"teen" and underage are different things.

the screaming unreasonable japanese hate mob are right tho

it's not about seeing panties. it's about the principle of the thing

also, let people enjoy their fake anime panties, you weren't gonna buy it anyway

this is all i post about anymore. it's all I'm passionate about. i just get so mad. why are you trying to kill our boners gaf

What a hill to die on indeed:

Information. You should seek some. It helps.

Well shit, I guess I should have known better than to play the 'ol anime girl age guessing game.

This is unfortunate. I was interested in this game, but I will no longer be picking it up. I don't see why they had to censor the Japanese version as well.

Are highschool cheerleaders not teenagers?! Still, who ever said that probably got the idea from checking teenagers instagram accounts.

I don't see why they had to change ANY version. Especially when Final Fantasy XIV proudly displays skimpy panties all over the place.

The weirdest thing in this kind of change is the absolute lack of consistency.

Yes we do. We talk about it all the time from recent things like new Tomb Raider games. Along with that the two arguments aren't comparable and kotaku would probably only makes one article about the continued sexism taking place in our industry.

I'm talking about violence relative to sexuality. Compared to how both issues are discussed and perceived in the west... No, nobody gives a shit about violence.

Aw shit, so this is what's been blowing up.

Understandable though. Well not the extreme reaction (and its unfortunate that this is the example used to fight the fight), but in general terms I'd be annoyed if my counties culture products were being modified in the original simply because of different cultural values of other countries.

It seems to me that its one thing to modify localised versions sold in other countries, its something different to have the originals changed because of cultural differences.

I guess this comes with Japan being weak in terms of the game market, hence why you wouldn't seen the level of violence in games trimmed in the US because of foreign concerns.

Different culture, age of consent is 13 in Japan, sexualized teenagers are a thing there.

I'm not big on it either, but I also understand different viewpoints and takes on it.

That's actually not entirely true. The minimum allowable age is 13 which basically means sex with someone under is automatically stat rape, otherwise prefectures choose their own. Most select ages around 16-18, much like the United States.

TBH it's ridiculous to alter her panties, but it's also pointless to get upset about the change in my eyes. Then again if I want to see upskirts, I'll just google for em. Don't need em in Star Ocean.

Plus, tity witch is where it's at anyway.

I would love to see the reaction if every western game was censored down to a T rating with no blood or heads flying off in every direction.

Pretty hypocritical indeed.

Square just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Star Ocean 5 for either system, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square, publicly apologize and do not consort with foreigners or you can kiss your business goodbye.

You don't even have to touch violence. Just look at how women generally portrayed in music videos.

Square Enix just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese otaku culture (I'm an expert), but pantsu and 1000 years old girls who look underaged are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by twerking like Miley Cyrus. If you screw up panties in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Star Ocean V for the PS4, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square Enix has alienated cringey otaku with this move.

Square Enix, publicly apologize and make the panties g-string or you can kiss your business goodbye.

You don't think it's understandable to be turned off a product when it's clear the people behind it had so little faith in their work and regard for their fans that they're fully willing to butcher core content just because of the fear of backlash from a minority within a single market?

Is foreigners the Japanese version of illegals here in the U.S.?

No. But there's two ways to say "foreigner," and they chose the rude one.

"Core content?" "Butcher?" Lol.

The surface area of skin that's covered is slightly more than before.

Don't you think that it would have been a better idea to release a modified version of the game for the west. That way they avoid been slaughter by Amazon reviewers.

LOL

"All foreigners play are games where you slaughter people indifferently. So they got a lot of nerve to speak up about small things like this in other countries' games"

I agree with this.

"DO NOT CONSORT WITH FOREIGNERS"

And this one is hilarious.

Honestly though if my country's product was changed on the domestic market for fear of backlash from a foreign market I'd be pretty salty too.

It's getting really hard to tell if serious or not with theses kind of posts.

Koei Tecmo made the right decision to keep DOAX3 out of filthy gaijins' hands.

Even though this post is tongue in cheek, it is sort of sad that they fear releasing it over here. It was really strange with that Destructoid import review. Their preview for the review already seemed they went at it with a really immature mindset and felt like they just got the game to blast it. They even doubled down on it after the fact when people even on GAF spoke out against the review (the reviewer is also a gaffer). It was really strange that the Christian game site that reviewed DOAX3 seemed to go at it a much more critical and analytical angle than Destructoid, which is basically a mainstream gaming site.

edit: Well I shouldn't say much more analytical, since these things are only one page. But there was a large difference in tone.

Okay so if she isn't underage I don't see why this change was made... But if somehow the game sales are worse because of this in Japan... Then their priorities are fucked imho.
