PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

For me this is kind of infurating, I purchased my PS4 on september last year, what am I supposed to feel when they announce an upgraded version of a console with so few years in the market?

The hysteria in this thread is fucking insane. No one is going to bail on 50 million PS4s sold, not Sony, not 3rd parties. Even if this was twice as powerful as the original PS4 the list of exclusive nPS4 games would be about as long as the list of exclusive n3DS games.

You say that that like the n3ds has even a lot to begin with.

It has one game: Xenoblade chronicles. Outside of that they only have minor eShop games that take advance and are n3ds exclusive.

It would really surprise me if only one game remains exclusive on this ps4k.

Well shit. Got mine this Christmas. It was a phone company deal (so I only got it for 50$ along with a phone I'm going to be paying off for 2 years) but still. *sigh* At least the PS4 will serve its intended purpose. It will let me play FFXV, Persona 5 and KH3. Three things I wanted to play since I was in high school still. And pretty much the only three things still keeping me in gaming in general. So I guess I have no real use for the PS4K anyway.

This is going to be so much fun

COD2016 - the elite class playing at 4K while the rest of the OG PS4s play at sub-1080p dynamic res.

Even playing field!

2x the power doesn't seem like enough for 4k. 4k in some games can bring a 980ti down to it's knees but eh.

I'm sure normal PS4s will still be adequately supported.

What I don't really get is where the 'K' business will end. I'm light years away from the kind of person who gives a shit about 'p's, so this is not aimed at me, but 4k means what? Sharper res! How about 8k? 16k? What does it actually mean at the end of the day. I am firmly in a content > form camp. I just don't care enough. I know others do. Sorry, just venting.

On the plus side, this might make 'old' PS4s much cheaper, so can easily snap one up...

Alot of people bought PS4's this past holiday season, I'm sure they won't be happy.

EXCLUSIVE to PS4K!

I'm really disappointed about this. Sony know full well this won't sit well with Ps4 owners. This really defeats the purpose of a console to me; all of them being the same throughout the whole generation & being confident your system won't need to be upgraded until the next generation.

Sure, they can go ahead with this, but be prepared for the defiance from owners of the Ps4 that plays significantly worse.
With 2 Ps4's I doubt I'll upgrade.

How long were you expecting the generation to last? The PS3 released in 2006 and the PS4 came out in 2013, which was 7 years later.

Most publishers wanted the generation shorter by about a year, so it would have presumably been a 6 year generation under normal circumstances. The generation will be 3 years old by the time this launches.

I will say this, this generation still doesn't feel like it's in high gear unlike the 360/PS3 generation. I've barely used my PS4 and at this time in the 360 cycle I was getting a lot more value for my console purchase.

So at least for me, this was a super slow generation that is getting capped off before it really got going.

I was expecting at least 5 years. Not 6 or 7 like the last two, but at least 5.

. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

QUOTE]

Fuck this. The angry part of me says I want to sell my PS4 after finishing Uncharted 4. The whole thing has been a colossal disappointment and I would have no difficulty walking away.

Okay.

I mean I'll probably get one at some point - if I won't be able to get PS5 by that time - but from a business perspective that's a very strange move on Sony's part. I wonder if they are just reacting to what MS is planning here as otherwise such move makes little sense for someone who is the leader of the current generation.

It will bomb most likely.

Honestly, I buy consoles because I don't want to worry about hardware upgrades. If they launch a significantly more powerful PS4, basically it's better to jump ship and play on PC. At least on PC I wouldn't have to replace the entire thing, just a GPU and/or CPU and would be good to go.

I also think that in the next generation people would be more cautious before buying consoles at launch. Anyway, I think what we will probably see is a PS4 slim with minor upgrades.

Except that new GPU in that PC will run you $300-$500.

I'd usually say I'd wait a year for a price drop, but then I'm only 2 years from the next co sole releases which means I should buy a PC.

I just noticed my typo. Thanks for the quote lol, thread is moving fast.

I'm thinking about the PC a lot more now. My train of thought is it's not worth it to maintain new versions Xbox and PS but I could definitely see myself getting a really nice PC which will cover Xbox exclusives apparently and then just upgrading the PS as they come out at hopefully around 399. Trade in old version for new version each time to defray the costs and upgrade/get a new PC every once in awhile. Still I like the idea of devs sucking every last bit of juice out of a machine like GTA V and the PS3/360. There's something beautiful about it.

Whoa, the explosive growth of this thread is illuminating. If all of it is true, Sony is going to have to handle this very delicately. It's probably about to spring up on dozens and then hundreds of online "news" sites...

I still don't really get why Sony is doing this. I mean, they're destroying the competitition and already have the more powerful console. Is this just a preemptive response to the possible Xbox 1.5?

Thanks god, I still haven't buy my own PS4 yet. I think I will wait for PSVR out. Maybe PS4K will be ready by this time, especailly there is no PS4 and PSVR budget pre-order yet.

I hope PS4K is a huge success. I'm tired of waiting for better hardware in the console space; 3-4 years sounds about right.

I'm in day one!

CPU still not decided?.
Thats a good one.Like if the most important thing in a new apu design is a last minute change.
Or they are still debating whether to go with 4 zen cores or eight.
The GPU is Polaris 10 for sure, probably smaller than Pitcairn and 2,5 times as powerful with 2.304 shader cores rumored.

Yeah, it sounds like a 2017 machine to me if they're still deciding on what exact CPU to put in the thing.

Or AMD has a bunch of options since NX, PS4K, XB1.5 are all happening at the same time.

Cool. Since the PS4 is a closed PC now does this just mean that the settings will just scale depending on which system you play the game on? This doesn't seem like as big of a deal as everyone is making it out to be. PS4 will be Medium settings and this would be high or ultra with maybe 60fps versus 30. PC's seem to cope fine with different levels of power.

I don't like the idea because the generation just started and they already sold a lot of units so a lot of early buyers are going to be pissed off if true.

Unless at least PS4K games run at 1080p/60fps in normal PS4 SKUs and look decent. But even considering that I don't like the idea.

If this is true they must do a trade program for a HIGHLY REDUCED price.

If the "significant downgrades" really just means that the PS4 doesn't have any many fancy effects, lower res (but still 1080/900p), and stuff like that, then I'm ok.

If not... no bueno.

I love this. I love when market leaders aren't complacent and try to do something new. If people don't want it, then they won't buy it. The market will reject it and Sony will have 50 million PS4s to fall back on. But then we'll at least know that this isn't something people want instead of all being arm chair analysts who think our own opinions represent those of the wider public. And as for me, I'll probably be there day one.

Sony won't see my money.

I would rather stay with my old PS4 and in case a want a new shiny hardware I can buy Nintendo NX.

I just want to know:

Are current PS4 users getting the shaft?

Current PS4 users aren't going to be given poorer treatment are they? I worry that devs wont optimize games for us the same way anymore
Here's the thing.

PS4 will continue having mostly 1080p30 games, while the new system will probably get 1080p60 games, or some specifically tailored games (lower poly/ textures) in 4k which would then run that much better on PS4.

Said 1080p30 games on PS4 would likely always have been 1080p30 anyway, but some feel shortened because a similar but technically better experience will exist with the same game on PS4K.

I'm not sure how that is splitting the userbase (same games, 2 systems aiming at two different demos/ display standards), but... some feel that way apparently.

I'm not convinced that most games optimized for the more powerful console will look or run like shit on the old PS4 simply because multiplatform games (so, most games) will still need to look and run acceptible on the even less powerful XB1.

I'm thinking future games running on the original PS4 will look and run much like they do now, and playing them on the upgraded console will be more analogous to what it's like playing a game on PS4 and then playing the same game on a mid-to-high tier PC currently.

Honestly, I'm very ready for this. I'll just sell my PS4 like I did my 3DS and Surface and upgrade. I'm very interested to see if they'll stick with PS4K, or do some sort of different name. Hopefully they don't just go the way Nintendo did with adding "New" to the title.
