Consider your opinion established, despite little or no support for it. You also fell into an appeal to authority despite those voices also failing to support their perspective.
I mean, you claim this will fail because other examples failed, but you have yet to reasonably tie the circumstances of their failures to the PS4k. Is the market the same as it was in 3DO's time? No, it would be preposterous to claim that. What about consumer expectations? Nothing whatsoever is shared among those examples and the Neo except that they're iterative.
Yet that is the crux of your argument. I think it's safe to say that your fears continue to be unfounded.

Multiple devs have spoken here on GAF about this, myself included. Most of the negativity is unfounded. A few valid concerns but those can easily be quelled when a valid roadmap is released if it is real and officially announced. Things can go south but I've picked apart the rumors we know with other devs about implementation and moving forward and we are pretty satisfied.
You will find most who don't listen to dev input will only listen to others for self-validation regardless of the few devs here who have spoken.
If we aren't sweating it yet, consumers shouldn't either. It's our livelihoods on the line if consoles tank due to bad decisions. I'm hopeful for the future of consoles and gaming. And I'm one pessimistic motherfucker.
The negativity is by people who were never going to buy it anyways so why would Sony care? All the threats of going PC or quiting gaming are just completely hollow. If Sony executes like they should all the complaints will be for nothing and they will just have two tiers of settings for their games. Something easily achievable in the PC space. Honestly it's a lot of talking about nothing.

In fact we know much more about the PS4k, so its no wonder it is talked about more. And it impacts the marketleader, not everybody is happy. The E3 will be fun i think.

While you're probably right, it's worth remembering that Microsoft make a similar assumption with the Xbone reveal, and, well, we all know how that went. Sony would be wise to re-visit their marketing plans for the PS4k, understanding that the ~40m PS4 owners are their word of worth marketing machine. Keeping them happy should be priority number one.
They'll be happy because their games will work just fine and the base model will be cheaper insuring it'll sell well. This is nothing like the Xbone reveal.

They won't have to try hard. Frankly, I don't expect the majority of those 40m to even care (as long as games keep on releasing for their ps4 and no neo exclusives come out, which sony has explicitly already stated in the documentation). It's just a small vocal minority on the internet that is being really negative and positive about this. And for new potential buyers it's a win win situation.
They're not going to cancel it because a few GAF members threw tantrums. They've invested a large sum of time and money into this and have been planning for the potential reactions.
Pretty much. Enthusiasts like us will most likely buy it, but consumers at large won't even be outraged. They'll just stick with their PS4 and be fine.

Will probably be somewhat positive with some concern. Right now people are letting their imaginations run wild with worst case scenarios. Some people will still not like it, but they will by and large calm down when concerns are addressed officially.

I think it's going to be fine as long as they don't just announce it and leave it at that. They need some trailers of games, both new and old, running in Neo mode to show people why they should be excited. Also most of the press don't even buy their own games and hardware so I don't see them getting that upset.

That's colin for you. A lot of people in fact crying about the "impact of gaming!" were ones defending the gaming reveal of XB1 a few years back.
Being concerned about what is going to happen is one thing, but we should be clear that this is in no way similar to XB1 reveal. You can still play your games, and if you want a better version there's an option, is a lot different from not being able to play them without an internet check every 24 hours.

Honestly from a consumer standpoint, I really don't see an issue. If every ps4 game released from here to the end of the gen, still supports your entry level ps4, then you will still be getting the experience you paid for.
What concerns me is how this is how it will effect developers. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that EVERY GAME coming out beyond October MUST support Neo-mode. It's An effective way for Sony to ensure that there new hardware will have the dev support needed to drive adoption. But its quite strong handed.
It reminds me of MS' parity clause; it forces developers to support this low-installed base hardware, on day one, or don't ship at all. The key difference is Sony actually has the market position to make this clause work in their favor (and to the detriment of MS, who would likely be on the losing end of a shift in dev priorities)
I hope for the devs sake that supporting Neo isn't a drain on resources.

basically all they seem to be saying, what the leaks have told us, is that ps4neo mode requires running at 1080p, again rumor, and maintain fps of ogps4. For most games this won't be a problem since the boosts are probably enough to brute force it.

That's only half the argument though, he wants a digital future because he believes they'll be more price points instead of the standard $60 price tag, which should lead to competition to benefit the consumer. He's also compared it to physical books, where he acknowledges they'll always be an admittedly dwindling market for them, think of a situation for example where in 10 years The Last of Us 3 is seen as a digital only release but there's a limited run physical copy on Naughty Dogs official website to satisfy people like yourself.

The dev talk was never going to influence the presentation, whether they like it or not, E3 press conferences aren't framed for them. Sony would have known that it was always going to be a delicate tightrope to tell the public that you don't need the new console but that you should want it, the mixed reaction from the hardest of the hardcore is just reiterating how careful with messaging they need to be.
Which is very short sighted if he thinks every digital store would operate like steam just because physical is out of the equation.

That's not the argument, the idea is that something like The Witness at $40 can find a place in the marketplace at a non traditional price point and that others games of a similar size and quality can compete with the them in that space. And at that point, with all digital games being equal, content starved $60 games will either have to add more content to justify its price point or become cheaper.
People were happy with the 360 for years.

Perhaps there will be more price points, but those price points will remain locked much longer than they would at retail. The same digital game can often be found at retail at $20-30 less after a few months, a year from now even less. Digital game prices rarely drop that significantly, and most of the time when the price does drop, it's not permanent. It's just a sale.

That's not how any of this works. Games come out of the gate priced based on the budget put into it. That's why technically full games (with season pass etc.) are actually closer to $80-$90.

Where did I asert it will fail? I am voicing the possibility of it having a negative effect. And only voice that possible outcome because of reactions from people with more gaming knowledge than myself like Jeff Gerstmann. Who voice more about uncertainty and bring up similar points that I di d about possible outcomes.

If you want a discussion that's all about the pros of this system then go make one. But this thread is about someone's reaction though emotional is valid since the uncertainty of this console in the market and it's possible impact is also somewhat shared by other media heads.

You make it sound like every $60 game has a similar sized budget, not to mention it isn't just about AAA, I used the Witness as an example because it's the perfect example. It started off as a smaller title and as the ambition and budget grew, so could the price point, how many small titles could be so much more if publishers were confident that people would be happy to pay more than the $20 standard.
