Nintendo @ E3 - No Direct, Just Zelda Treehouse Stream

Definitely adds credence to the idea that they'll have their own major event later in the year but I still don't think this was a good move.

Maybe E3 is slowly dying, but it's still pretty unwise to not at least try to place yourself on equal footing as your competitors at what most people perceive is the biggest event of the year.

Someone was gonna have to be the first of the big three to pull out of E3, but it's certainly a risky move, and definitely hurts Nintendo's mindshare.

That said, people will be super hyped to see Zelda anyway so maybe it isn't the worst idea.

Probably is though.

I'd like to be surprised or annoyed...but I'm not. It is Nintendo, after all.

What about Nintendo fans that aren't into Zelda? I've only ever beaten the two DS games, these games don't tend to be my cup of tea. Often find hem very hard.

It looks like Crash Bandicoot Returns will be my highlight of E3. Don't let me down, Sony!

I'm OK with all of that. Seeing Zelda in any capacity completely overshadows everything else for me.

Can someone check on Nintendo and see if their leadership is in good mental health? I'm starting to get a little worried about them.

Well considering it would have been that or a livestream just around the time of E3, honestly? I don't give a shit, they could do a Digital Event anytime they want and chances are they'd have the same reach and hype around it since Nintendo fans are gonna watch that stuff anyway regardless of if its E3 or not.

Sad to see a company I liked so much in my childhood fall so hard.

Seriously, what a joke.

"We need to release games until we release a new console?! Noone told us that!!!" - people at Nintendo HQ

There's just gonna be this big Nintendo booth with a wooden CRT TV in the middle of the booth. While Shigs hugs the only copy of Zelda they've got at the show.

This is the most bonkers I've seen Nintendo,or am I overreacting.

None of you are compelled to tune in, if Zelda isn't your thing you can just not watch, don't worry nobody's forcing you. You'll get your Nintendo E3 later is all.

They're being pretty smart about this.

They're basically skipping E3 but adding a floor experience for Zelda.

No direct means no stakes on their part. They're not going to hype up or disappoint fans, because they're not participating : They have their own 'E3' later in the year where they will present their future platforms to full attention.

They just don't get it, do they?

Pretty much, but it's still just unacceptable.

True, but since this is the only game from them that I realistically still want, I don't particularly mind. Especially since it's already been confirmed that they won't show NX. And I doubt they'd announce another high-profile AAA game for the Wii U in the little time it has left.

I'm obviously excited to see Zelda footage but Nintendo in general has always been my main reason to stay up late and follow E3.
I'm sure Sony and Microsoft will have some cool stuff but E3 without even a Nintendo Direct is gonna be a muted affair for me.

No direct, what? In fairness, even though they do them at the same time, does Nintendo themselves consider direct a part of their own e3 coverage? They might still be putting one out.

Nintendo has been backing away from E3 for quite awhile so this isn't super surprising. I guess earlier this year I thought that E3 was going to be the big reveal for the NX, not only for the fans, but to show the industry that their hardware could be taken seriously. I haven't really gotten what Nintendo is doing since the SNES, though. They aren't aiming at me as their target demo.

I really do think there is a chance that the NX will get delayed. I just don;t understand why it wouldn't be ready to show in June, but would be ready in September. If there margin is that thin, then any new issue that might come up could result in a delay.

Or are they really scared of getting their spotlight stolen by updates to current consoles and VR? If so, maybe the platform isn't that appealing?

Pretty much.

Don't think they want to have a whole negative nancy display after last year vindicated those people on that end. Better to just return to E3 or make an event of their own when they're actually properly set up.

This will be a good decision in the long run.

I've honestly always wanted a fully loaded console launch, and for one of the big 3 to delay things to build up a bit of catalogue

NX reveal better explode Nintendo into their next chapter. They really can't fuck it up especially if they're not unveiling it at E3.

I mean, if the NX isn't ready to be shown in full, then no use in rushing the reveal (which would end in another Wii U situation).

It would be another Wii U situation if it's another bad product like the Wii U. But then delaying the reveal won't help them anyway. Considering that several new hardware is releasing soon, this would have been the perfect opportunity to chime in ,,mid gen". Instead, they now give the entire marketshare to Sony/MS again, without even trying. Unless the NX reveal is only a few weeks later, NX is inherently hurt when everyone's already spending hardware money on VR preorders and others. While their already dead in the water public image is gonna go downhill even further, considering that now everyone believes something's seriously wrong with NX. Plus it's gonna like that they aren't even part of the industry anymore, when the rest of E3 is gonna highlight that Nintendo's not the place you can play any games at.

In fact, considering the console is supposedly 10 months away, it's highly dubious that they can't show anything off. I mean, iirc just recently Eiji Aonuma said that the infamous Twilight Princess reveal was based on a hardly playable build. Yet they can't get decent footage for games that they want to bring out in March? This stunt made me lose hope that they've learnt from Wii U significantly. This move is just as delusional as their Wii U strategy.

Hmm, wonder if they'll just post trailers on their youtube channel, or if we'll even get that. No way they don't announce at least some 3DS games, unless they're saving those for an august direct or something. There's still more to learn about color splash, as well as potential info on unlocalized titles like picross 3D 2 and Box boy 2.

I'm also going to be on zelda media blackout, so at least I don't have to worry about the direct spoiling anything, this will be my first nontendo E3 ever, i think. Bizarre. Hope the sony conference is exciting, at least, though I'm not sure what they could ever do to top last year.

More than anything, I'd be willing to say this is more a sign of E3 dwindling than anything. Yeah, nintendo probably just wasnt ready for E3, but if E3 were THAT important, they would have scrounged SOMETHING to show off. It's clearly not that important to them and they'd rather wait and do things on their own terms.

So the new Nintendo Direct that Kimishima was talking about last year is that there is actually no Nintendo Direct?

After this, the NX had better be fucking earth-shattering. Nintendo's basically just writing off 2016. "Nah, we've got nothing, see you next year."

Where does it say they'll be no Direct? Surely they'll be showing off 3DS titles in some way.
I wouldn't be surprised if they did a little showing of 3DS games like they did a few years ago where they held a little one hour presentation for it in the evening.

What a colossal disappointment :(

I mean, they HAVE unannounced 3DS games. Why not announce them in a Direct here?

How can you do this? I wish I had the strength

I'm more or less sold on Zelda and want to see as little of it as possible so I'll be skipping Nintendo altogether this year.

Also, it seems like they're showing this off way too early. I don't think the reaction would be any different if they just skipped E3 instead.

I still maintain that they were going to show NX at E3, backed out at the last minute, and are now scrambling to put something together for the show.

That's the only way this makes sense.

I agree. It doesn't inspire much confidence in the NX if they're not willing to show it so close to release.

I thought we around knew this?
Why would they have a direct for one game?

They said that Zelda would be the only playable game. A lot of us assumed there'd be a direct with trailers for games like Pokemon, Paper Mario, Monster Hunter, and so on.

There is absolutely zero chance Zelda can live up to this. An entire E3 focused on ONE GAME. Come on. This better be the best game ever.
