Uncharted 4 spoiler free early copy impressions

Got my copy this morning. Played through the first couple of chapters and it's everything I hoped it would be. Looks incredible, controls are great, it's smooth and responsive. Naughty Dog at their best. Believe the hype.

So i haven't really read any impressions about the gameplay but how is the stealth in Uncharted 4?In the past Uncharted games i could never really play stealthily but in The Last of Us that's all i did.

Have a question, thought I'd better ask in this thread: anyone that played the game, can you tell me if like in U3, if you take a little time to solve a puzzle, Sully or Sam start throwing "tips"?

I really hated it in U3.

It's pretty much just Uncharted stealth. You can mark enemies and they have MGS esque warnings over their heads and stuff, but you can't lure them over with sounds or anything

I got to Chapter 6 before going to bed last night. Holy shit people, I'm still in awe. Single greatest looking game I've ever played. I knew it was going to look incredible, but I wasn't ready for this. There's no way to prepare, you just have to dive in.

Damn, I just want to leave work and go play!

No copy for me this morning. Probably a good thing, though, as I'm prepping for some stuff tonight. Monday now at best, but it better be no later than Tuesday.

Played about 5-6 hours so far. Really liking it so far.

Curious - do you see friends on your list friends playing this game? I am sure I have people playing it but their profiles are coming up as blank.

I am sure its just not showing up yet, like the games trophies.

One of my friends has it and it shows the title under his name. No trophies yet though (which is kinda ridiculous the game is out in a few days lol)

Holy fucking shit.

This game... It's unbelievable. The writing the performance, the animation, the scripting...

Naughty Dog have to be the most comfortable craftspeople in any medium right now because this just comes together so beautifully.

Really sublime work.

Heh. There was a part where the MGS fan in me could just see how Kojima would have shoehorned one of those press-X-to-nanomaflashback and ND doesn't , it just lets the action speak for itself and it was so natural, so perfect...

This game is just peppered with that nuance and pitch control.

I know i'm gonna mis-click and enter the wrong thread one of these days.

I already have twice, realised before reading anything though, so I'm still spoiler free.

He doesnt know how to combine gameplay and story without conflict.

In both Uncharted and TLoU there has been massive dissonance between gameplay and story sections.

Its even more dissonant in TLoU where the characters are supposed to be vulnerable emotional humans in the cutscenes but the gameplay consists of nothing but racking up a massive body count by the end of the game.

Almost every human you meet outside of cutscenes is a target to be killed in TLoU.

Compare this with The Witcher 2 and 3 where the interaction with the world is much more believable and sophisticated.

Neil didnt revolutionize gameplay and story interaction in anyway,no matter the quality of VA and Cinematography in his games.

wtf lol

So I am three hours in, played enough to give a good opinion.

First off, this game is beyond beautiful. I have never seen anything like it, and it's so good looking I don't think i'll ever see anything like it again. I haven't had this feeling since playing GTA V back on the 360. It's a whole new standard.

Gameplay is crisp, it plays perfectly. There are no janky controls as in previous UC games, no accidentally falling off of ledges etc. which is nice. The shooting is awesome, it feels like it has an identity, rather than being secondary in the game. When you get involved in a firefight, it does feel like it means something.

As far as the beginning goes, it's probably the best introduction to a game i've ever played aside from GTA V. That's TLOU included.

The balance of the game is great, yes, there seems to be less combat. But the shooting is so good that when there is a firefight it's truly a joy to play and you feel the tension. Plus, there's more platforming which is a big plus from me. I love platforming in a game. UC3 was great but a bit too much solving annoying puzzles and not enough of what I actually wanted. UC2 had too much combat. UC1 was perfect in terms of the balance, and it does feel like that to me.

Also, the easter egg was incredible. I loved it!

Any questions? :)

Not knowing how the aiming feels is the only thing holding me back from ordering it. It feels sloppy in the Collection, I read that it's improved (closer to TLOU I guess), but then watch a video (Kinda Funny Games no spoilers) where they say Uncharted 2 had better gunplay, but 4 is the best combination of everything in the series. So...worse gunplay than 2? I don't know what to believe without playing it myself. :)

Playing the MP beta I can say it's the best of the series. Plus, all of the gaffers who have gotten it early have praised the gunplay.

What a bizarre interview. No, it's the best gunplay in the entire series and it's not even close. 2 doesn't even stand up to it in the slightest.

As someone who's played UC2 for 300 hours online, this is the dumbest shit I've heard all day. UC2 doesn't have better gunplay than UC4. My god these reviewers say the silliest shit and people eat it up.

Gunplay is absolutely the best in this game, better than the others. And I just recently went through the Collection so it's apparent.

I don't think that is what Tim was saying. He was saying shooting was at its best in 2 and melee was at its best in 3. UC4 has the best of both those worlds though. The best shooting and melee in one package.

Thanks for the first part, but being unsure what to expect based on different impressions, and not playing the game personally, isn't the same as eating up shit.

Just so everyone knows I hate everyone who got the game early.

But I hate you all equally so I'm not being too discriminatory.

Lucky bastards QQ

2's gunplay was fine when it came out. TLOU's gunplay was much, much better. UC4 also runs circles around 2 gunplay wise.

I don't think there's anything in UC2 that is not mechanically improved in 4.

Good to hear. I felt this way after the MP Beta also. I like how it blended TLOU feel into UC while raising the bar for both.

The anticipation is too much right now... ugh... only 3 days!

Thanks, I was waiting for your impressions. It looks like the near perfect narrative/narration and impact left by The Last of Us prevent Uncharted 4 from taking the crown. By the sound of it however, it looks like it's conceivable to prefer one or the other. I mean, it sounds like Uncharted 4 is Naughty Dog's finest work in terms of gameplay, scale, level design, and progression, so it may depend on how you valuate story and gameplay, or which type of game you like the most.

A bit disappointed to see some plot issues. I hope it's not as bad as some scenes in Uncharted 3.

I was a little worried, but I'm really glad to read that people enjoyed the soundtrack. How is the score during the calm moments ? How would you rank the soundtrack of the series.

Don't worry, nothing as bad as Uncharted 3. I am holding this game to the same standard as TLOU in terms of narrative, not the past Uncharted games.

The score during the calm sections is pretty nondescript, feels similar to how they implemented it in TLOU, but without the guitar twangs.

My opinion on the music in the past Uncharted games, I don't really have an opinion. It was fine, but nothing really that memorable. I didn't have a strong attachment to it, like some here seem to.

One thing that really gets me about how much better UC4 is compared to the rest of the Uncharteds is the setup. The villains are more than two dimensional and you feel like you actually have a reason to go treasure hunting this time around.

I think it's pretty telling of the game's quality that it get's compared more to TLOU then the past UC games.

Personally, I don't think ND will be able to one-up the sheer impact that TLOU had, both on the market and in terms of it's narrative until ND's next-new IP. Because it'll allow them to have the sort of creative freedom to do so, free from the confined framework of an already existing set of gameplay ideas and characters.

I won't say that .
I am sure a lot of people going to like UC4 narrative more than TLOU .
From the impressions you guys give looks like it will come down to what type of story you like .

Absolutely. Even the story of the treasure is leagues better than any other game in the series.

UC1: Demon's Souls
UC2: Dark Souls
UC3: Dark Souls 2
TLOU: Bloodborne
UC4: Dark Souls 3

Pretty much spot on. Except I like TLOU more than BB.

I don't mean that ND won't be able to beat TLOU in quality. Personally, I think UC4 is tied with TLOU, maybe a bit better. Haven't decided. More like the impact on the gaming market and the heights it propelled them too.

UC1: Demon's Souls
UC2: Dark Souls
UC3: Dark Souls 2
TLOU: Bloodborne
UC4: Dark Souls 3

Booooo! I agree with DS2 = UC3 though. That's pretty apt.

Edit: I just don't think DS3 = UC4 works out. DS3 doesn't differentiate itself enough from past games unlike UC4.

My thought process is that UC4, like DS3, has the leads from their super acclaimed spin-off/new IP, making the final game in the series for current gen consoles. And it looks and feels better than ever, but its hard to get back that original impact of discovering the series and its many characters/action/locations/ideas and game design. And as good as it is, its probably about as far as they can possibly push the formula, so its time for something new after this.

That sounds fair.
