I want to name my son Nemo

Yeah it sounds cute now, but he's going to change his name when he gets older. Can you stand having a name like that as an adult? lol.

It would help if we knew what his last name was. I mean, Wesley is good if your last name is Snipes or something, but if your last name is Dimpleton or Smallpeck, then not so much.

Are will still on Nemo? Depends. He could captain a submarine.

Everyone dont listen to this man, i dont want more people with the my name (Wesley) then there already is as i am the only one who does it justice :D

Me and my wife have a few names for our kids that we like. If its a boy we will either call him Dexter or Hannibal, if its a girl we will call her Misha. For the people who havent realised where these are from they are Dexter Morgan and Hannibal and Misha Lecter :D

My parents wanted to name me Lorel-Lee. I'm so glad i looked more like a Shannon...:lol

I think maybe going with an uncommon but not rediculous name is a good idea. For example, in my group at high school we had 3 Toms and 3 Alexs. My name (Shannon) is not all that common (I've never met another) but its not all that weird either. That being said, i think Nemo sounds like a kinda cool name.

I dunno, i can see it as a serious name, like something a business man could have. Plus, who is going to remember an old animation movie, or make the connection? Nemo sounds like an alright name to me.

I'm just gonna quote myself here:

Are you saying you never watched a Disney movie older than you when you were little? Pinocchio? Bambi? Snow White? Fantasia? Dumbo? Alice in Wonderland? The Sword in the Stone? 101 Dalmatians? The Jungle Book? Nothing?

Try 'Talula Does The Hula'.

I saw a news bulletin once that reported a judge letting a little girl change her name from that, in a statement against parents giving their kids terrible names.

So you're going to Beat him? Are you going to see Beat off every day? Will he Beat off the competition?
Yes, I'm aware of those meanings. And no, I'm not going to beat him. But I will teach him how to fight and help him build his confidence over time.

Captain N...

...Captain Nemo?

I love it (hate it) when people see something and think it's a reference to X, but it's actually reference to Y, and they missed the fact that X itself was also referencing Y.

When encountered on the internets, X is almost always an anime.

Nemo, in Little Nemo, in Nadia, and in countless other things is a reference to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Captain Nemo of the Nautilus.

And just to get this one out of the way, the next time you think something is similar to Ghost in the Shell, just say it's similar to Blade Runner / DADoES. You'll look smarter.
What makes you think that ckohler doesn't realize that Nadia's Nemo is an homage to Verne's?

There's nothing wrong with using the Nadia version in that context. It looks better as a picture on a forum. Also, Nadia is awesome.

Also, obviously GITS is heavily indebted to a lot of cyberpunk (and earlier) SF literature, but it has some ideas of its own. It's perfectly understandable to recognise where it takes inspiration from but still find something more reminiscent of GITS than those works.

I am having a lot of trouble trying to figure out what to name my kids =/.

My girlfriend of six years is white as... well she is French, German and Icelandic. I am Ethiopian, and a bit of some other things.

We are both Atheist.

What the shit do we name our kids? I don't want to go with anything that has any basis in the Abrahamic religions - at the same time, I don't want anything TOO hippy like "Rain" or "Light" or some shit.

I wouldn't mind naming my child after some obscure mythological creature, nothing anyone worships now adays, but nothing too iconic (I.E. Zeus would be too iconic).

A part of me wants to name my child Loki, but I have a feeling by the time I actually have a child I will think it is stupid. My girlfriend wants to name our possible daughter Arya, and I like that too.

*sigh* - This shit is hard, I probably wont have to worry about it for years, but sometimes I do!

What is the point of not giving your child a name that comes from one of the main religions of the western tradition? I don't really understand the idea behind making a statement with a child's name, by doing that you're just following in the path blazed by that which you oppose so much.

Yeah, I'd take any businessman named Nemo seriously.

As your child-naming advisor of record, OP, (cf. tag) I must caution against naming your child the Latin word for "nobody". No one will remember Finding Nemo in 30 years and your kid will still be named "nobody". Good night and good luck.

Didn't any of you ever read, watch or play Little Nemo? It's only bad because he's referencing the fish, not the classic character from the comic strip/movie/NES game.

So then name him Kid Niki: Radical Ninja and be done with it!

I always thought Dante was a good name for a boy that'd be somewhat unique.

Then every day at school he could go "I'm not even supposed to be here today."

And he could be #37 on every sports team he's on.

Nemo? Don't do it. This is a person, not a pokemon.
This. Just give him a normal name. Nemo might be cute when he's little, but once he grows up he'll probably hate it.
How about Vincent?

Say what?

And to address the rest of your post. Because I just don't want to? It would feel weird giving my kid a Christian name, I was raised Muslim! It would feel less weird giving him a Muslim name - but I don't want to give him a Muslim name because I don't plan on raising him Muslim, Calling him "Ahmed" would just be in poor taste.

I don't see the point of giving my kid a name that is so white-bread Christian when his family is going to be anything but - heck I don't know why people are so afraid of their children being beaten up for having a weird name - growing up the only kid I remember who got messed with for having a weird name was "Don Qi". Poor bastard. Everyone else had names like Paul, Yusuf, Thanushian, Suraiya, Nathaniel - I actually knew TWO kids named Anfrony, and a few other really really black sounding names. They did not get messed with, they did not get teased - and it will be even less of an issue 10 years from now when my kid is in grade school, as everyone is currently fucking everyone else, and naming their kids all sorts of shit.

No, I just want to give my kid a cool name without any baggage. You know what I might name one of my daughters? Freyja, I've always had a thing for Norse Mythology. I wouldn't even spell it Freya, I would spell it Freyja just to spite you.

Also, 'one of the' main religions? You mean just Christianity?

Every kid gets called names, regardless of their name.

I don't see a problem with 'Nemo' - is the origin/meaning of a name all that meaningful to most people? Probably just get shortened to 'Nem', or something.

Anyway, I never got why people had to go out of their way to get obscure names - as if they are trying to forge an identity and individualism to their child before they're even born. I'd prefer simple and elegant - different is irrelevant (it can be, but doesn't have to be).

I generally can't stand people trying to be different for the sake of being different.

True story, my first name is "Sher" pronounced "Cher." Luckily, no one in the world calls me by my first name outside of role call.

I suffered for your sins, OP, don't punish your kids.
