Why is everyone anti Bruce x Barbara? (Batman)

I didn't watch that particular series, but I'm somewhat a fan of Batman and don't have a problem with it. It's just a story. Some people can get waaay to uptight about stuff like this.

Reed Richards met Sue storm when she was 12.

Eventually they aged her to 17

The relationship between Bruce and Barbara is that of father and daughter (ostensibly). It's incestious and gross.

I've been marathoning TAS the last few months, and I got more of a student having a crush on her teacher, instead of a father/daughter dynamic. She daydreams about being in his arms, and she already has a father figure in her life. Her actual father. Who she loves and admires and who loves her more than anything, so there's no real reason for Bruce to be a father figure.

Never forget Bruce actually knocked her up in the DCAU comics.

I wonder what happened to that kid. I'm guessing the baby didn't make it since there isn't some Wayne-Gordon wunderkind running around the Beyond universe as far as I know.

I mean, loathsome as that relationship is, their child seems like they'd be a superhero before they were out of diapers basically.

Yeah, but people also come down hard on teachers who initiate inappropriate relationships with their students. It's not that exact messed up power dynamic, just a completely different one.

Barbara got assaulted and had a miscarriage in the same issue.

Pretty much in line with how damaged I consider Bruce to be. He has a pretty clear streak of wanting control and submissiveness so no wonder it translates into his love life.

Oh, I still think it's messed up, especially since it's his adopted son's girlfriend and closest friend's daughter, and also because he's her mentor and boss.

Just saying I never really picked up on the Father/Daughter stuff.

I never saw Bruce as a father figure to Barbara. Barbara was in college in the animated series (I believe she graduated too?) and Bruce was drawn without greying hair or wrinkles. In fact, he looks like he's in his late twenties so make an argument about age differences is kind of moot (and also kind of stupid too - age ain't nothing but a number).

While he was a father figure to Tim, he and Barbara didn't hold that same time of relationship. I think it's completely within the realm of possibility for the two to fall in love, and it adds a really interesting dimension of complexity for the animated series canon.

Keep telling yourself that....

Stop reminding me of this shit, Im trying to lock this away in the same dungeon with Gwen Stacy having sex with the Green Goblin.

Cause it is fucking creepy, she was a kid when they met
When I saw this thread, I was going to say I don't see what the big deal was until I scrolled down and saw the pic of them together.

I don't even have to know the context of Batman Beyond to be creeped out by that pic.

One of his best friend's daughter, and his adopted son's ex. Dick was right to punch him in the mouth.

Considering Bruce was an adult (and Batman) when he met Dick in the series, there's at least a 13-15 year gap there.

They tried for "shocking" and "daring" and it came across as just... uncomfortable.

Dick Grayson is pretty much his son (many incarnations even have him saying it outright). You don't date your son's ex. The fact there was a set-up of Bruce knocking up one of his best friend's daughter and his son's ex-girlfriend (I thought Batman was "always prepared?!") was just.... it was a pretty heinous storyline that definitely gave me shades of both Gwen and Gobby and CAD.

It felt just as wrong to me to see Tim and her hook up in Akrham Knight...

Or maybe it's just because Barbara and Dick are just one of "those" couples, that OTP that folks keep trying to screw around with, when in reality they're just so good together that anything else also just feels inherently wrong.

That's the ONE big area I felt the DCAU screwed up, and one reason I consider anything after season 3 to be an extended "alternate universe" take on the relationships, because it's SUCH a deviation from the comics. "It was puppy love", she tells Terry in Batman Beyond, yet their romance in the comics is one of the most enduring, challenging, painful, heartful, passionate, intimate, genuine relationships in the history of the medium. After her paralysis, he didn't pity her or coddle her; he pushed her to be more than she thought she could be, and he made her feel alive and adventurous long after the cape was hung up. It wasn't just saying the words or being in the heat of the moment... it was being THERE for each other, in the midst of some of the hardest situations anyone has ever been through.

Isn't the point that its supposed to be kinda gross? Like, at least having read the comics and watched the show I felt like most of the point was that Bruce was a colossally fucked up guy who couldn't make normal relationships and for whom Batman was all to the detriment of everything else. So of course Batman had a fucked up fling with Barbara at one point. We even see in the show it didn't last.

Like, I wanna say that's why Terry's relationship with Bruce matters? Cuz its Bruce's last chance not to fuck up having a meaningful relationship with someone else, and because Terry isn't afraid to tell him that the cape comes second to his own life.

The fact that it was supposed to be gross doesn't mean that it was handled well or, for that matter, that it became not-gross. And it comes across as extremely exploitative of Barbara's trust and relationship with her mentor, and heavily detrimental to his relationship with his surrogate son.

Batman's supposed to be a predator of criminals... not former-jailbait.

It seems very out of character for him, especially going off those first three seasons.

Bruce did dick dirty by hooking up with Barbara. Barbara always felt like a daughter or much younger sister to Bruce, that shits gross

Tho to be fair, Dick was cold af towards her in that one TNBA episode where all three of them get back together and CatWoman meets them or something. It was pretty funny, Babs was acting so thirsty with the whole "There's room for one more on that motorcycle!" and Dick just goes, "Maybe next time." Dude learned well from his surrogate father.

You forgot the page where Dick has sex with Babs and then gives her his announcement letter for him and Starfire's engagement immediately afterwards.

It's fucked up on multiple levels.

Bruce is a pseudo parental figure to Barbara.
Bruce is a good friend of her father.
Bruce isn't a male cougar.
Bruce knows that she was in a relationship with Dick.
Bruce is practically a monk. He doesn't have time to bang, k?

It's a bad characterization.

Eh, I dunno, man. Dick's a slut, but he's generally a good guy. Bruce loves to play games.
Dick once slept with Barbara a couple months after she was crippled only to invite her the morning after to his wedding. Even he does some messed up shit.

Edit; already posted.
