Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

Its funny to me that hardware cycles are now getting to be shorter than AAA software development timescales!

I mean seriously, there was just shy of 3 years between TLOU and Uncharted 4. At this rate ND's next full release could potentially skip NEO altogether and ship as a launch title for full-fat PS5.

So we might get...

PS4 Neo - Fall 2016?
Xbox Scorpion - Fall 2017?
PS5 - Fall 2018/2019?

I don't see this happening. Not in the slightest.

Sony and MS will probably bump their noses so hard by the decrease in sales for these upcoming versions, that they'd probably even delay the PS5/Xbone3 to 2020-21.

I find it mind blowing that so many people here believe that your mainstream gamer is going to buy the supposedly "updated" consoles on a whim. Replacing the current one's they just bought two years ago.

It'll never top PS2/PS4 sales.

I should have stated this but on Windows Weekly, Mary Jo Foley (good Microsoft insider) was talking about Computex next month (I think the first week in June) and how MS is going to talk about how VR works with Windows 10. Think Google's "Daydream" initiative with their VR reference designs and stuff. I think MS/Windows10 is going to have some "official" connections to VR. If that is the case, you could imagine the Xbox 4 (I still think that's gonna be the name) will have that capability since it is Windows 10.

I think if you are interested in Xbox news and capabilities, you should be paying attention to what Microsoft is doing in Windows 10. Cortana will be interesting.

If they bring the X1 ecosystem to PC, and the console-exclusive multiplats (like, say, KH3) run better on X1 than PS4, then I can truly be Nintendo/PC.

I don't understand how they expect people to realistically drop 400 to 500 dollars every year on one of these things.

Console market with crash if this happens.

Well since they are not all a single company, they are not expecting you to drop $400 a year.

That was a good response. Just wanted you to know that you did good.

If true i would go back to xbox! Wanted to stay with playstation, but if the new xbox is indeed that much better i will go back!

I would want both. PS Neo for fighters, JRPG goodness, exclusives.

Xbox whateverthefucktheyaregoingtocallit for multiplats (assuming this rumor is true) and it's own exclusives.

Article states that MS was caught off guard about the release of NEO after GDC. NEO could possibly have a 8-12 month head start.

It's why I have no idea why MS would announce this at E3. They'd crater their sales and they'd hand over all the mind and marketshare to PS4. And then pray that people jump on the new box.

Its a fairly obvious reason: Sony will announce an iterative step. Microsoft will counter by announcing, for a later date, a much more pronounced upgrade that they will present as "completely dwarfing" the Neo in a hopes to plant that "there's something much better just a ways away".

Who knows, maybe they're masterful PR can even spin it in such a way as to show Sony is rushing an unneeded product to market and that they "are doing it the right way".

They, simply, consider this a better option than remaining completely mum on the subject. Either way, the Neo is coming out before the Scorpio. They may as well try to cut it off with messaging.

I don't think anyone is expecting Scorpio to outsell or come close to the PSNeo in anyway; MS will never be able to top that ~1 year head-start the Neo will enjoy, coupled with the fact that Xbox is dead outside NA/UK.

What will happen is that DF and Sales threads will be more entertaining now; performance threads became predictable (PC>PS4>XB1) and sales threads have gotten stale with only two main consoles on the market.
The Neo is likely going to be counted as a PS4 sale. So sales threads will still be pretty predictable, though I suppose it if Xbox One and Scorpio are counted separately, maybe predicting the sales split between those 2 could be interesting I guess.

It’ll be interesting to see what the market does when the consoles relative power positions are flipped though I think a decent part of the PS4 goodwill comes from doing better in nearly every cross platform game, will sales change when the Scorpio is more powerful than the Neo? Or is the damage and mindshare already done?

I also wonder if Sony won’t be scrambling to meet the higher targeting rumours before launch. They could always scale up the die size of the AMD APU with more GPU execution hardware.

And what of the XBOs memory situation? Are they still using so much of the die for eSRAM for compatibility, or can they move to GDDR5?

The majority are much more likely to just upgrade their PS4 to a 4K, than they are to wait almost a year longer for a new Xbox.

Scorpio may launch with no one but a subset of Xbox owners caring, like another Wii U.

Damn that's a huuuge gap, I seriously consider to hold on my PS4K purchase and just wait to XB 1.5 if that's the case.

IF they announce Xbox Slim and the Nextbox at E3...

The only way it would work would be if the Xbox Slim price is slashed. And I mean slashed.

If MS can price under $200, then I can see them having the right message.

There not going to expect people to upgrade with every new system.
This is about locking people into a eco system .
Be it on PC or consoles , it's the same for Sony .

No one is realistically expecting that. NEO is for enthusiasts. The OG PS4 won't stop selling at all and it allows Sony to increase market share and profits. Eventually over time the older model is phased out but it doesn't matter because people can still play games on it if they bought thanks to the mandates Sony has.

Also the iterative route is probably better on game development than a full console gen/recycle every 5 years.

I don't know about a crash, but I do know that, personally, if this is the new normal, I'm picking one brand and sticking with it for good. Which I'm assuming is the point of iterative hardware. Sony and MS want you to stay locked into their ecosystem forever.

Why would MS kill any potential sales by announcing a system more than a year in advance? If Scorpio isn't supposed to be released until late 2017, it makes zero sense to announce it this year at all. Their best bet would be to announce it early next year to try and deflate some of the hype surrounding the PS4K.

As for the 6TFLOP part...I'll believe it when I see it.

Where have you been? The ~0.5TF difference between the base XB1 and PS4 was being played up before either launch and have been the constant ammo of warriors.

We're talking about a much larger gap here, but teraflops have been the pointed pieces of empassioned defense for quite some time now.

Well it's not like that power difference hasn't shown itself to be useful.

Xbox One: Krapika
PS4: Killua
PS4k: Adult Gon
Scorpio: Meruem

Wii U: Leorio
NX: Gon

My favorite part of console wars is dbz charts.

Maybe they think it will slow NEO sales by offering a premium box in the following year.

I mean, it's a crazy/insane strategy, but at this point they really don't have much to lose.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if MS pulled out all the stops to make sure whatever they release will be more powerful than whatever Sony put out this time around. I dont think it was the main reason at all that allowed Sony to pull so far ahead this gen so far but it certainly didn't help with so many reviews pointing out that many games perform slightly better on PS4 be it framerate, resolution etc.

Apple and Google have been doing it for nearly a decade now.

Welcome to the party, Sony and Microsoft!

Buying more shit is always better for consumers, yeah.

What I mean is hopefully we get systems that are more powerful where the companies that put them out foot most of the bill instead of consumers. If it's not a big upgrade people won't buy it. Personally I was disappointed with the jump in quality of the console games this generation. Most can't even hit a stable 60 and does anyone remember assassin's creed. They couldn't hit 1080p on the ps4 until the patch came out. It's a joke. I don't want to spend $500 every year for a new console but I do want better graphics, animations, levels, ai, etc.

As long as everything is backwards/forwards compatible I don't see any issues. You can play on less powerful hardware and nothing changes or you can upgrade and have some more bells and whistles.

I find it mind blowing that so many people here believe that your mainstream gamer is going to buy the supposedly "updated" consoles on a whim.

I guess we will see the numbers soon enough. I do think it makes a certain amount of sense to have a $399-$499 premium version, and a $199-$299 mainstream price.

I mean the beauty is you won't have too. If it's backwards and forward compatible then you can upgrade as you see fit.

How many "Xbox" is MS going to release? This will completely confuse people.
I really hope Sony stops at Neo and don't come out with other crap until ps5.

Sounds like a bs leak to keep people from buying a neo.

1) there is not going to be a new graphics Tech in 2017 to be 50% more powerful than neo and fit within console price points
.

Who's to say Microsoft even WANTS to fit within console price points? What if the Xbox 1-2 is $600?

They don't care about XB1 sales, they're trying to spoil the PS4K party before it starts at E3.

Yep it will also help huge balloon increases in game budgets like previous gens
