Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

Are those numbers even possible under a reasonable $600 price tag?

I wonder if they're going to go the Surface route, where they build a premium device as an example for manufacturers to follow.

Perhaps Xbox One is the minimum (budget) spec and the Xbox Two/One Two/Next is the (premium) spec?

If they did this every 2-3 years they'd never be on the low end of the power game again, but still have an affordable option.

Microsoft should have kept quiet on Scorpio if it's further off. Would have been smart to see what the reaction to neo was before announcing Scorpio because right now sony is taking a fair bit of negative criticism. Why join the party publicly until you have to.

This generation is a mess

It just confuses the whole market. How are they realistically going to make games for a system that uses 1 tflops and the other 6.

I just don't see how this is all sustainable.

PC gaming is getting more attractive by the minute with these leaks...

So if I have I right, Microsoft played Sony the same way Sony played Microsoft when they unveiled the ps4 was going to have 8gb of ram instead of 4. I sure hope the ps4k gets a spec boost but it might be a little to late now? Idk

I don't know about a crash, but I do know that, personally, if this is the new normal, I'm picking one ecosystem and sticking with it for good. Which I'm assuming is the point of this. Sony and MS want you to stay locked into their brand forever.
MS has made the decision for me. Stick to Sony for consoles and most 3rd party games, and get the occasional MS exclusive game on PC which I don't game on as often (which is why I don't get most 3rd party games on it).

This new Xbox initiative is confusing. As I understand it, all Xbox games will be on PC. So, for any exclusives to this Scorpio, I'll need like a 1080? Or, 1180 by then.

To be fair, Microsoft haven't said a thing.

As in the other thread...

No, because none of this is official on either side.

If anything, it is not unlike how it was pre-X1/PS4. Gies and all.

I don't know if 'confuses' is the word I'd use. Saturate might be a better term.

But yeah, this is definitely going to shake things up for the average consumer, and not just in terms of the new consoles being 'limited' to having equivalent 'old' PS4/X1 capable ports.

Because Neo is launching this year and Microsoft is trying to steal its thunder. The negativity around new consoles is actually quite reduced outside a small and noisy circle.

I guess we will see the numbers soon enough. I do think it makes a certain amount of sense to have a $399-$499 premium version, and a $199-$299 mainstream price.

200$ for a mainstream console. Yeah, no. When your average Samsung and Apple device cost 600-800$ from the start, I do not see the current PS4 going for anything less than 300 and the upgraded version for 600-700$, especially if we have to believe these "power specs"

The 3-4x rumored power increase is absolutely insane. I don't believe people quite realize what the difference is. That's like letting a Volvo race a Ferrari.

4 times the strength at 2 times the cost.

No thank you. Unless it's literally a new console (AKA Next Gen) there's no reason to buy something that will play the same games, just a bit prettier.

And even if it *was* just 4 times stronger than the original Xbox 1, it doesn't make the system have any exclusives worth buying it in the first place, IMO.

I really don't care how strong a console is. At this point, I'd rather have my PC upgraded if I want strength. I get consoles for the exclusives.

Both "Neo" and "Scorpio" are expected to be released in 2017 (late?). That would make it almost 4 years since the original versions. Price for their components will probably be even lower by then so $399 - $449 would sound about right. And it's not like the old consoles will be obsolete or something. Until the next versions are out 6-8 years from now (PS5, XB10000), the original consoles will still be fine.

Gotta say, all these upgrades do is remove my desire to get any new console during its launch. I'll probably just sit them out on my launch PS4 until there will be good games which won't work on it.

Can you post yours for reference?

No need, don't expect any wonders from NX...it's more about how it is put to use ;P

so peter north (ps4k) has weaker specs but the actual output we'll see in the games will be better?

Lol, that was exactly the reason why I chose this analorgy.

what movies have you been in?

Some minor supporting roles in "Cougar Hunter CA", "The Bang Bus Cleaner", "Semen Says...", "Asses for the Masses" and "Blast 'em vol. 8". I'm mostly a rear-view double, so it's hard to recognize my traits.

How the fuck is this gonna work?

Make games for a 1tf and a 6tf box at the same time?

6X range in graphical options scalability is nothing unusual in PC space where a low end card like the GTX750 Ti can run the same game a 980Ti can. (something like low/medium 30fps vs ultra 60fps and higher res)

Personally think going iterative is a terrible move, just can't se the casuals upgrading their consoles for a few more pixels every 3 years. I'm interested in how game development will be handled and how big the differences actually are

What negative criticism outside of few forum posts? People will either buy it or they won't. They way it's set up is you're not forced. Also neither of these have been officially announced. Lets wait and see how both parties present it to us before passing judgment.

I gotta wonder just how far silicon optimization is going to get them. They'll be shrinking from 28nm to 14nm, but 6x the flops? So 3x the silicon budget? That would be outrageously expensive.

-edit- Duh, 1.5x. Still quite expensive.

Why would they announce it next month if releasing next year. Makes no sense.
If you're saying that thinking, why would anyone buy an Xbox One knowing some super-machine is arriving in a year's time then, well, if you're waited this long to buy an Xbox One then you are clearly not the type of person who rushes out to buy something the moment it launches.

Maybe you don't give a damn, or maybe you don't have that kind of money to throw around.

Most often it is the latter, people are happy to wait for price drops or slim revisions.

Therefore those people wouldn't be interested in the powerhouse Xbox until it receives a drop. So all you need to do is convince them that don't worry current Xbox will be getting all the same content.

With a die shrink, a $200 base ps4 is easily doable depending on what they have to pay in terms of royalties.

It's best for them to make this console a new generation if it's that powerful and have backwards compatibility with Xbox One. Having to rely on using the Xbox One as the base is not smart for them.

Speeds can change a bit but the hardware is locked at this point so if Scorpio is 6tf Sony can't do anything.

I'm quite interested in something like this, I was all about 360 last gen but it is increasingly likely I'll be sitting out Xbox One with everything else on the plate right now.

parents love planned obsolescence.

Apple does it all the time. Doesn't hurt them at all with parents buying them and their kids apple products.

And just like tablets ,yes a better version of yours is now out but it doesn't suddenly make yours obsolete.
