Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

Announcing a late 2017 release at this year's E3, a move that's 100% sure to kill Xbox One sales, is Microsoft saying "bye" to this console generation. Scorpio is a reset button.

I'm not buying into the promise of support for Xbox One. It'll be dumped within a year of Scorpio's release, as far as 1st party studios are concerned.

They already dumped support for the XB1 when they announced all further exclusives are coming to PC.

Just like the PS2 fucked up compared to the original xbox.

But I guess if MS can get a big player like EA not to support the Neo until the XB2 is out that could be big

This remind me of "everything is gonna be XB1 exclusive" from 2013.

I get why MS would want to try and have most powerful box: but how expensive s it gonna be and how big/hot?

If it's too expensive that'll negate the lure of being more powerful and limit it to smaller enthusiast market.

This goes for Sony too of course. Real curious to see how this plays out. Might be time to fully revert to PC for a while until dust settles and the market take on this move is clear.

It would be a stupid ass reason because it's not going to stop PS4 sales at all lol. It only serves to tank their own. Meanwhile PS4 still sells regardless of the NEO.

I didn't say anything about stopping PS4/Neo sales, just keeping users from jumping ship (off the platform) if they see its keeping a similar innovation cycle.

They already dumped support for the XB1 when they announced all further exclusives are coming to PC.

Except they said their exclusives would come to both Xbox and PC.

I'd rather both companies put more and better RAM into these systems...the odd vs. even year releases of Xbox and Playstation systems is going to be an exercise in we're the best for 12 months...now they are the best for 12 months...then back to we are the best...and so on.

Yeah and when software is forward compatible and you bring your library with you, riding out a year or two of the weaker console to then upgrade to the newest all singing dancing model means most people will just stick with the brand they like that gives them the best amount of games. Until Microsoft start making Uncharted 4 level of games then I can't see them really improving their situation.

Also when PS4 is at least 2:1 Xbox One sales there's a much larger base of users likely to stick with Playstation for the foreseeable future, even if Xbox has a way more powerful console for a year or so until the effective PS5 comes out.

What if the new "Xbox" is what SteamBox was trying to accomplish? Various models, different specs, different prices, all Xbox branded, and all using Windows 10 as a unifying OS. Meaning that Xbox consoles would be "badged" gaming PCs for the mainstream, ever-evolving but always backwards compatible (like PCs), and PCs would essentially function as custom built Xboxes, able to play all the Xbox/Windows 10 games. At this point, it's not like their console "exclusives" are worth much in the grand scheme of things. Might as well just focus on the Windows 10 ecosystem like Steam has done with its own for so many years.

I've stated this before. MS' play is attacking both Steam and Sony at the same time. Damnit, this E3 people gonna be lookin more at hardware than software and here I am looking for what the fuck ReCore is. LOL

So the NX...

I'm thinking (or hoping) that the so-called "Supplemental Computing Device" is something that Nintendo uses for Forward Compatibility and uses it to "keep up with the Jones's" . There is no way Nintendo can drop a home console with the specs of an Xbox One in 2017 no matter what the price is unless they are thinking that the Xbox One will be the baseline spec for most third-party games in the new EcoSystem of consoles.

So who's going to be making a third party game that wouldn't run on most PCs now, nor on the base PS4/XB1? Most of the actual devs seem to have been blindsided by it, so it's doubtful you'd see anything targeting Neo/Scorpio exclusively until 2019 at the absolute earliest.

The only games really requiring more graphics power at the moment are VR ones.

Getting Nintendo as an exclusive developer for the Xbox One.5 is HUGE (why else would Nintendo not be showing anything other than Zelda?) Can't wait for E3!!!!

Has anybody actually discussed what kind of CPU they are using? I don't want to think of the folly of them trying to feed such a GPU with a Jaguar based CPU.

Announcing the Scorpio is sending the X1 Slim to die, is it not?

You think they expect people to buy a Slim in the meantime, and a Scorpio next year?

Not really. . For lots of people (myself included) graphics are as good as I'll ever need them to be and they have been for a least 1 generation. If you're looking for the games but not necessarily the extra polish then getting an X1slim would be a fine choice. I don't think MS/Sony intend to segregate their market.

The slim is a lower price console for casuals/price sensitive that haven't jump in yet and Scorpio for current owners/hardcore?

Both forward/backward compatible.

Of course the Scorpio at E3 could be made up BS as we don't know the source.

Anything is possible though and admittedly it is a bit exciting.

Then what was the reason? I bought a PS4 over Xbox One at launch because of the power. At launch, there weren't any exclusive games on either console that made you want to buy either system.

The reason was largely disinterest in the XB brand. I bought a PS4 for the Japanese exclusives i knew it would get in the future, as well as my disinterest in the types of games MS published at that point(or lack thereof), as well as how they did business(DRM shit, loss of goodwill)

That goes for a lot of people, but the brand itself is just not a big deal out of America and occasionally the UK.

My main question here, is that it seems this isn't some sort of "stop gap" solution like Sony seems to be thinking the Neo is. This is pretty damn close to a full console transition in terms of power.

So I take it MS is fully done with "generations" at this point. I realize the polygon also states this but its interesting to see as I feel like Sony will still have a PS5 and that Neo is just a halfway point to extend the life of the PS4.

It seems MS is full on out the door on generations as we normally see them at this point if 6TF does indeed hold true.

It's really fun to read GAF today.

How suddenly the power doesn't matter anymore. Who cares about 1080p vs 900p? We don't buy consoles for their power, we buy them for their beautiful shape.

Even if this rumor proves false, it already brought some glorious reactions.

Yeesh.

A potentially $600/£550 console that's coming 12 months later than the PSNEO is DOA.
They're going to tank Xbone sales so hard... due to this.
Lose money on their Slim model because sales have nose dived as well as lose (hemorrhage) money due to R&D and fabrication costs that they won't recover.

Death of the Xbox brand as we know it.

How in the world do they think this is a good idea?

Someone at MS thought buying Nokia was a good idea. This was a mistake that cost several billion dollars. MSFT always make the same mistakes.

I smell a trade in program for Xbox One owners towards Scorpio.

It would make MS look "good".

Slim for a market that wants something on the cheap (your average consumer), and Scorpio for the "enthusiasts".

Ya know, I had a visual in my head of Spencer dropping a bomb like that, right after I typed my post.

Then I remembered that the shareholders would mutiny.

If the slim is still supported with first party ports, it absolutely could be sold as the cheap option to play Xbox games.

Get a price range around $199-$250 and I have no doubt it will sell this holiday.

The value quickly goes out the window, in my mind, as soon as the 1TF vs 6TF screenshots come out.

Games on the X1 will "look like and run like shit" in comparison. $199 is way too much to pay for a plate of shit.

Just buying the regular PS4, which can at any moment get a nice price drop itself, still sounds like a better idea.

Could be if they feel it will keep folks from jumping ship to PS/Neo.

this entire scenario sounds so dumb
"let's kill any xbox one's sell power has left, to counter the upgraded version of the market leader that will likely launch one year before ours new machine, and likely at a cheaper price too"
i mean, what could go wrong?

Exactly. They really need to think things through instead of trying to combat Sony's Neo. This will fail in a spectacular way just like their Windows phones.
Scorpio sting on PS4 Neo. I wonder if that name is intentional ;)

Looks like Neo could be DOA.
Am I reading this backwards?

Sony can always bring out another system in 3 years time that will leap frog MS system .
And then this goes on forever between the 2 of them .
So the question is who going to lock people into there eco system faster .

What we need is technology that can upgrade it self. Think ratchet and clank weapon upgrades. Technology that can reassemble its self if needed.

4x the Xbox One is only 5.28TF, not 6.

The Neo rumors were also 2.3x the PS4 or 4.23TF, so where are they (he) pulling these numbers?

Seems like she padding and shaving.

Plus it's Polygon, when do they not prop up MS numbers a little extra with "proof".

Seems to be a good amount more, much more than the gap now. But damn yall already out here doing damage control

More like people are pointing out that it reads like typical Polygon. Also others pointing out that the old system (Xbox One) would probably barely be able to run the games properly if the jump would actually be to 6. Not to mention announcing a system a year and half in advance is like saying you don't want to sell anything for a while.
