Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

This is the problem with manufacturers trying to force "generations" and beat the competition to the punch. Everything gets staggered and no-one actually sits in a position of power for long at all.

Would PSNeo owners rush out to buy a xbox 2 a year after for the sake of owning the most powerful console? or would they just wait 2 years and buy the PS5 that will be more powerful than the xbox 2?

More likely, especially if being in an ecosystem really is a thing for console gamers.
It will become even harder to abandon your friendlist, trophies AND library.
MS needs more than sheer power to get people onboard.

on the other hand, everyone knows nintendo's doing a new thing next year (and from the sound of it, something that's similar to what the other two are doing). microsoft could leverage that and marketing the scorpio as part of a new generation that it and the nintendo thing are a part of, creating a perception of sony having out-of-date hardware.

it would basically just be a branding/marketing move, but such a thing worked pretty well with sony's 'for the players' stuff in 2013.

That's an interesting way to spin it. I haven't thought about it.

But they still need to release it at an affordable price.

You know the more I think about the idea of a 6TF console the more unlikely it seems. Unless MS is planning to heavily subsidize the console (which seems unlikely given their initial price target for XB1) the manufacturing cost would lead to a retail price that would cause quite the sticker shock. There's also the matter of bottlenecks which seems unavoidable with such a massive GPU.
Couple that with cost along with the massive heat and power profile such a GPU would require and it really just does not add up.

Polygon doesn't exactly have the best of records when it comes to the interpretation of data. Seems far more likely that polygon heard a "4x the power" as a general overall sell for the HW revisions, took it as a literal statement and then very crudely extrapolated from current known GPU specs. Until we get some sort of additional confirmation of this it would probably be best to remain highly skeptical.

Nintendo is most certainly out from this Neo - Scorpio race. And it's a wise choice, methinks.

And Sony will just put out footage of Horizon: Zero Dawn and God of War 4 running on Neo and any messaging to that effect will fall on deaf ears...

That's easy. Start showing the PC versions of their games to counter and talk up the capabilities of the upcoming console, how the game you buy today works on both Xbox consoles, at higher fidelity on the new Xbox automatically.

Jason Schreier also said he heard that 5-6TF is the target. That's about as credible of a 2nd source as there is in the industry.

Very curious to see how the sales of this new consoles (XboxS, PS4k, NX) are going to be in the next years.

Microsoft has a though job, especially in Europe. It wouldn't surprise me that in the end the majoraty of the sales would end up being in favour of the "old" PS4, depending on the price difference between the hardware.

Star Citizen on at least one of the new consoles, come to me!

Jason Schreier said he heard ~6 TFLOP too, but then added it came from the same single source.

with sony not selling consoles at a loss anymore, 6TF sounds pricey. I cant imagine this being in the same price bracket at that power level.

The current performance target for Microsoft’s Scorpio is approximately 6 teraflops.
I assume this is MS thinking they can achieve it with the power of the cloud or something?

No way it will be 6 Tflops

Or you know "target"

At this point they could become the third one that takes the bone
They just need to make an amazing game experience. Also Metroid.

So we're locked in an endless cycle is basically what you're saying. XD

This is only just the GPU, and I am sure this won't fit well with Jaguar so a new CPU is in order to go with it, and new memory architecture to replace esram/ddr3.

To me it's like magic. Or lots of $$ I guess can cover it if they do a loss leader on console again.

That is honestly a GREAT point. You can't (or shouldn't) strap a Titan class GPU with a weak sauce Jaguar APU level chip. You'd be wasting the massive GPU investment.

I have no idea but it lines up with these numbers, doesn't it. This was posted by Jeff Ribgy (yeah yeah) days ago.

And the PS4 Neo is reportedly using polaris, which is also a brand new piece of silicon, isn't it.

On desktops, Polaris is price positioned as a mainstream chip, Vega is what will compete with Nvidia's high-end HBM2 sporting Pascal GPUs, also releasing in 2017.

lol my gtx 980 isn't even that much

still two things need to be addressed for it to work

price and games lineup

if price is too high and exclusives or not really exclusives and/or enticing then people will wonder if they should just instead build a pc

especially since it isn't even a full gen yet and we are going all out with a new one

So we're locked in an endless cycle is basically what you're saying. XD

In terms of power, I don't put anything past Sony or MS in terms of how they market a game to make their console seem the best.

Do you really expect Sony is going to advertise the PS4 version of God of War next year instead of PS4k? Come on. Similarly, Microsoft will use the PC to show their own games in the best light.

There's always the desire to be on top, I'm sure but I can't imagine a Xbox this powerful. I kind of feel Sony will still remain on top. They will find a way. I own both consoles, btw... so I'm not calling xbox trash. Many people are saying this is crazy but until we find out about the real specs (if these aren't fake) then I think I'm gonna wait it out before giving an opinion.

I'm really curious how the industry will deal with the upcoming console power struggle. We've been hearing for a long time how the increasing requirements to make a game in the AAA space are straining and there's a lot of stuff going to be added to the mix very quickly. I mean these new systems are all going to be extra work for the devs surely.

This is a fucking mess. I really don't want consoles to shit the bed this fast and this furiously.

I just realized there's going to be a new tier of fanboy that the console generation has never experienced before: Hardware Elitism within the same brand.

You thought Sony vs. Microsoft was annoying? Wait until it's Sony vs. Sony vs Microsoft vs Microsoft.

Enjooooooooooooooooooy.

No way, Nintedo will become the victim of the ensuing chaos in 2017. Part of Apple's major success with the iphone was being the simple solution to a market flooded with hundreds of new devices. Apple came early to the party and for many consumers iphone has become a synonym for smart-phones/ mobiles. And people are willing to pay more for this kind of simplicity.

Holiday 2017 we will have PS4, Neo, Xbox 1+2, NX + Handheld, PSVR, maybe Rift for XB
...not everyone is going to to well with consumers gravitizing towards the "hot" thing from yesterday.

I think this is the big issue that not many are talking about. What would a reasonable BOM be on something that could deliver 5-6 Tflops?

If MS release this Scorpio for $599 US Dollars or more, they are going to pick up the bottom of the market with the Slimbone, and I don't think a price cut and a 2TB hard drive is going to do much against the PS4, much less the Neo.

That is precisely what it is going to devolve into.

It almost looks like they are saying:

Nah, it's because of market reasons, technology reasons, and managing risks. I mean these consoles were not designed for 4K(1440P and 1080P with good anti-aliasing being more realistic rendering resolutions) or optimal VR. To truly allow for the best experiences and support up to 4K games, revisions are necessary.

It sucks. We are just getting into the groove. All the delays and broken games are behind us. In fact we are in probably the best stretch since the consoles came out.

Not we've got 'look how much better your games will look' 'pay $20 to upgrade your ps4 games to a PS4Neo edition!' It can't be easy for developers. I don't want Naughty Dog making a new version of Uncharted 4. I want them to get going on their next game.

I foresee more long development time, delayed/broken games...

But they'll look good!

wow, this could be a shock for Sony, they should be prepared.

What a shock for Sony that a console MS just started to design that is going to be sold for a unknown price is going to be better than PS4 Neo, that by all account should be entering production soon.

With the Xbox sharing its 'exclusives" with PC The One Scorpio better have an insane bang for the buck spec wise, Nvidia should be more worried than Sony.

If its already dangerous for Sony to try this, its even more difficult for MS given the state the xbox is right now.

I can't help to think that MS will once again try to differentiate using the cloud / cloud compute.

6TF based on project Delorean anyone?

That's my guess.

Yea especially considering a 1070 which comes out next month will be stronger than Titan X.

1070 also won't fit in a VCR-like box, without cooking the plastic.

I just realized there's going to be a new tier of fanboy that the console generation has never experienced before: Hardware Elitism within the same brand.

Friend #1: Dood look at this NEO God of War version at 4K 60fps omgggg!!!

Friend #2: Pffft I play God of War 5 for the story, muddy 792p textures, and cinematic ~18fps gameplay. Get rekt graphics whore.

Does anybody think that Microsoft's hardware engineers don't realize this, if this is all real?

Their technical fellows are well versed in these matters, I'm sure.

We're discussing the plausibility of rumors.

Boooh, you're late. I've patented the term "console civil warz" in March.
