Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

I was planning on purchasing the rumored Slim console this holiday season, but I may end up waiting to purchase the Scorpio. Then again, depending on how easy it is to move stuff from console to console I may just get the Slim, then trade up for the Scorpio. The next couple of years will be interesting for both Microsoft and Sony, I don't think I've ever been this excited (well, not exactly excited but tuned in is the word I guess) for gaming as it relates to hardware just in terms of seeing how things will play out.

If this represents the start of an iterative console model, I'm not sure I like the idea of buying a new system only for a better one to be released within a couple of years. It's going to drive me nuts if the improvements are substantial with each new version.

Ouch, right in the disposable income.

This souns like a new gen. I don't think the games made for Scorpion will need to be compatible with the Xbox One.

Microsoft can't really force developers to port all games to the Xbox One-teraflop, can they?

If devs were mad about the 2x faster PS4K's appearance, they must be livid about this prospect.

That is what it looks like to me as well, despite backwards/forwards compatibility. It's just way too soon to be announcing a new system that is a full leap over the Xbox One.
It'll likely still be held back by the PS4K (which is being limited by the PS4).

It's clear Phil already did this in March. Why intentionally leak specific hardware details weeks before you announce them.

Leaking "5-6 TF" is not exactly specific. Controlled leaking of target numbers could undermine Neo's launch hype without MS having to put the cards on the table. As I noted before, it'll be mighty interesting to see if hard numbers are presented at the conference.

I was thinking of getting a Shang Tsung. That system can morph itself to anything.

CGI aplenty on the MS E3 stage I fear. It's not as if they'll have anything playable. The hardware is too far off.

I fail to see how this news should put Sony in damage control mode.

If anything these rumours (and the ones from past months) tell us that Microsoft is late to this game, in fact we heard this iterative-upgraded console shit from a Sony guy for the first time in 2015 and Neo is gonna launch earlier (fall 2016 or early 2017).

So Sony has:

- an already(?) definite console set to be launched earlier

- better exclusives (cause they won't be on PC)

- the biggest userbase with 40+ M sku around the world and better brand recognition

- probably a cheaper price, more inclined to be cut too

Raw power can't help much and can't prevent devs from developing for the lowest common denominator (especially with that userbase). But it's definitely something different compared to the traditional cycle we always had.

Four times more powerful is exactly what I would expect a console released four years later to be. I expect it to launch at $400 too, unless they bundle it with something like they did at the Xbox One launch.

I am pleased that consoles are adopting a PC-like approach of more or less continuous upgrades with full software compatibility across 'generations'. Of course, further in the future (like 2021-23) new titles probably won't be supported on the original PS4 and Xbox One anymore, but I would very much like it if backward compatibility is maintained going forward forever now.

I think this is a good situation for everyone -- console makers, players, and developers alike.

Dude, you mad?!?!?! Games in 2023 supported by a 10 year old machine? You nuts?
Do you want to freeze game development for so long, or what? Same physics, AI, engines for that long...no thank you.

What if Sony got really clever and does not say a word about NEO at E3.

Internally, they shelve Neo / PS4K and move PS5 forward to 2018, and therefore leapfrog Scorpio.

This is kickass news for PC gamers. It sounds like MS's vision is for Xbox to be a gaming platform rather than just a console. The Xbox console will just be one way to play Xbox games, sort of like a Steam box.

As much as I want this to be true, I don't really see it happening. Developers who already release PC versions of their games, no problem. But the additional resources to make sure it runs on varying hardware configurations. I just don't see it happening for the rest of the Xbox ecosystem.

So NX will be near a generation behind before it comes out. Oh well, so much for third parties.

Kind of sucks I bought a PS4. You know Western third parties will target Ps4.5/Xbone1.5 and the 4/1 versions will perform worse.

Western third parties weren't gonna support the NX Platform either way.

People.

None need to buy every iteration of a console. Just get every second or third revision. Not the end of the world.

If you are really concerned about having the best version of multiplats, get a pc. And if you want the best, but ecluding dealing with a pc, then just sell your slightly used version every time a new revision comes out.

I mean... really.

Why buy one console per generation when you can buy two?

And why wait until a generation is over? Buy a new console every two to three years.

Don't worry though, new games will technically play on your legacy hardware, just not as well as advertised, and for who knows how long at that.

Too much hassle.

Part of the appeal of console gaming is just buying a piece of hardware and knowing you'll play games on it for several years without having to think or worry about upgrades and shit. Looks like that is soon to be over though.

I can't be the only one that finds it a little farfetched that MS would talk about a much improved Xbox console whole still of course trying to sell Xbox One consoles and games for it and also announce a smaller Xbox One for the holidays or before the holidays. A reveal early next year would make more sense. But if multiple sources are saying the reveal is soon.... interesting.

In the past, they've expressed their intent to make games backward and forward compatible, which would imply that games would still run on the Xbox One. How well they'll perform is an open question though.

Sounds like Sony out in front again and Microsoft having to accelerate their plans to play catch up in the marketing/fanbase department. Hey MS/Xbox don't release a half baked console/platform this time and focus on games, pure and simple. Also you want to be the leader this time around? Loss lead like the old days. We spend plenty in the first 12-24 months of owning a console; from movies and games to music and peripherals.

Yep. If Micrisoft really are going to make the stupid move of releasing this thing long after the Neo, then their only chance of any kind of success, is to not only create a 6+TF monster, but to sell it at a heavy loss.

What is so hard to believe when they are already doing it? KI, Quantum Break, Forza Apex, Sea of Thieves, Gears of War: UE, Forge for Halo 5, etc. It's all about the UWP initiative and getting people to the Windows 10 store ecosystem across devices.

Ditto. At this point I don't even care. I MAY... MAY HUGE MAYBE will upgrade down the line to a NEO and that's at least some time after launch. This pissing contest is why I stuck with consoles. Fuck this. Great for some people but not up my alley. Just reminds me of my PC gaming days of new upgrades every 6-8 months.

Yeah i hated those PC upgrading days, damn money sink.
Damn shame, i wish it was more affordable i would have stayed PC only.

A new console every ~2 years at a higher price and at the the rumored relative level of power each upgrade would actually keep me from further investing in my PC. It would be close enough in power and updated often enough to stick with the other benefits of a console. I would further expect that Best Buy, Gamestop, and so on will make upgrading very easy with walk-in/walk-out trade-ins.

I'm all for them hitting a home run with this, but it needs to come out this year and sooner than later. I was ready to jettison my Xbox One, play UC4 then jettison my PS4, and settle in on a GTX 1080 or two for my PC to realize 4k gaming feeding my new Vizio P75.

If the Scorpio doesn't come until later in 2017 or under delivers on power, I would go full force to PC and not look back. I hope all the cards come out at E3.

Yep. This is what I think too. The xbox one is dead and they are dropping support much like the OGXbox. Will make sense with Spencers no 1.5 claims too. Glad I finally sold mine after the QB announcement.

You forget Sony has a VR device to sell off the back of the PS4K this year.

You probably won't even need to buy every iteration. Based on what we heard about Neo, every two iterations should suffice.

Developers will also be less afraid if pushing hardware knowing more powerful machines are always around the corner.
Yeah definitely. Games will have to be designed to be scalable across multiple hardware configs, so that should hopefully mean less "consolitis".

I think the smart move if somebody needs the cutting edge console would be to alternate between manufacturers on a tick-tock schedule. Then you get the exclusives of each and a way to play multiplats with fancy graphics

rofl, this iterative console stuff is going to be a nightmare if I'm going to have to switch consoles every three years in order to get the best multi-plats

Devs are going to put even less effort into optimizing for all the platforms they'll need to juggle now. The differences will be slight.

I suspect any forward compatibility would be from scorpio onwards. If the rumored specs are true (and I have many doubts), it would be amazingly hard to develop a single codebase to work on both. Especially with esram in the equation.

Scorpio would probably have the extra power required to reliably run uwa's without problem, whereas xb1 needs the code written as close to the 'metal' as possible.

Power is great and all, but they need to hit the right price. I'll buy it no matter the price cause Halo, but it can't be more expensive than the PS4k if MS wants to be the top dog.

Neo being on the market a year longer is going to mean Sony will always be able to undercut the Scorpio on pricing unless Microsoft decides to loss lead, which isn't going to happen..
