Looks like there will be many Forest and Cave areas to explore.
Dark type is actually "evil" type in Japanese. Japanese wouldn't really associate it with the moon. They would be more likely to pick psychic type or maybe rock or water type to represent a moon pokemon.
By the way, did anyone spot any frame drops in the trailer? I've watched it a few times and I don't see any, not even when the Legendaries are using their special moves.

It's a Yokai Watch style open world, so it's probably the biggest region yet. Look at Kanto without the window dressing:
Did the XY trailers have any?
You can also add Pokemon to your Pokedex via QR codes.

Only the basic data though, so yes you will have to go catch it yourself.
Region map killed my interest. Looks like it'll be another boring linear-fest continuing from XY.
I know what the game maps look like, but Alola looks like it has very few routes and the ones that are there mostly look tiny.

I'm not seeing it. Did you look at the big version of the map? It looks like it's as populated with routes and towns as any other Pokemon game. Things just appear condensed because there's not miles and miles of empty forest filling the space between routes and towns.
I kinda see what you're saying about the routes, I'm kind of assuming that there's tall patches of grass peppered throughout the whole game rather than the clear route-town dichotomy established in previous games
Negative, baseless garbage posts like this always make me wonder if the people that post them know how to experience happiness in life.
What? I don't understand what you mean.
You've actually played X/Y? Or the Pokemon game before that?
You'd think you'd be excited to play a Pokemon game with an organic looking map after having played through two maps that just looped into themselves once.

He has Mega Man name and avatar. I think the answer to that it's pretty obvious
I'm really curious about this spot on the map.

Something to note about this map (that I'm speculating):
Geysers? Hot springs?
...hot springs episode???
Not in Pokemon.Geysers? Hot springs?
...hot springs episode???
Do we have a bigger version of the map image yet?
And the moon legend has a 4x dark weakness...Tho that's explains why it got multiscale I suppose.
Don't really see why a 4x weakness is a big deal. Rayquaza has a 4x Ice weakness, Ho-Oh has a 4x rock weakness.
As long as it's got the movepool to back it up that doesn't preclude it from being an absolute monster.
Probably similar to Lavaridge Town.
Not in Pokemon.
The islands don't look like they'll give the player room to explore, in fact, it looks like there's a pathway that can take you to the locations highlighted in the areas. This looks to continue what XY did where you went from area to area without taking your hand off the game's and allowing you to explore. And even when the game gave the player a chance to explore, the area itself was small and braindead.
It's just weird that the moon legendary is weak to darkness since it's dark out at night.
Wait
Your friend says something gave them chicken skin (does anyone still say that instead of goosebumps?)
How does he know what a chicken is
Huh, you win this round, Game Freak.
Has anyone pointed out that the structure in the middle of the region seems similar to the concept art from the first trailer?
yeah but it turns out that building is actually on the island just to the right of that structure
It's already happened multiple times. Not in Pokemon.
So experiencing happiness is always dumbing down and being 100% positive? Get a clue..
Some quick things to note after looking at the new map:
- There are four major islands + the artificial one in the middle as the description of the region has said. BUT, there is an island to the top right of the region, barely obscured by clouds. Definitely another island to visit as I don't think it'd be there for show.
- There are two conveniently placed clouds at the bottom of the screen, probably obscuring more islands. There are no other clouds in the rest of the region (just around it), so it's either late game or post game content.
- There are boats heading between all of the major islands. Based on that we know the starting island is the top-left and the way the boats are heading, I think the order you visit them will be: Top-left, bottom-left, top-right, bottom-right. All four of these major islands has a dock which you can see, meaning we'll be able to travel by boat to all of these islands throughout the game.
- The bottom-left island has a smaller island to its south, but this island seemingly can't be reached via boat or even surf if we go by past mechanics. (No dock, rocks blocking off the southern beach of the major island.) Of note, however, the shallow water color extends around this, so more than likely, you'll be able to surf from another part of the island.
- If you count the four major islands (bottom-left including the smaller landmass to its south), the artificial one, the partially obscured on to the top-right, and assume two more islands under the clouds, you'd come to eight islands, like Hawaii.
More speculation based on the map...
- Tried to count the amount of Pokecenters visible on the map. I count 12 for sure, with another possible two on the top-right island. (Though, I believe only one is there, so 13 total.)
- Based on that total count, with only one Pokecenter on the bottom left island, I revise my original ordering of islands. With only one Pokecenter and a lack of towns, I think the bottom left island will be the last one you visit, either housing Victory Road/Elite Four or the temple which houses the respective mascot legendary. (It does seem to house a castle/ruins within the plateau segments.) You probably go clockwise around the islands.
- There's a neat walled off city on the bottom-right island. Interesting to note that the upcoming Pokemon movie seemingly also takes place in a walled-off city.
Oh yes. Biggest region map image we've ever had, as a matter of fact.
