Best Videogame Music of All Time?

it's STILL Monty on the Run on the C64.

why don't we just keep posting the thread titled

"[AS OF : Aug 2007] Monty on the Run (c64) - it's still the best video game soundtrack ever."

everyone just posts a '.' under it - you can use that line above as a template for future threads too if you like?

Sword of the New World: Granado Espada, you must hear this soundtrack. One of the best I have ever heard. PM me for a sample.

Chrono Cross
Chrono Trigger
Xenogears
Baten Kaitos
Vagrant Story
Seiken Densetsu 3
Valkyrie Profile
Final Fantasy VI
Street Fighter 2

There are too many...

I was about to say... No Xenogears and Chrono Cross love?

In no particular order:

Sin and Punishment
Monkey Island
Mario 64
REZ
Ecco: DoE (not perfect, but when good, the best)
Flimbos Quest
Klonoa: DtP
Cybernoid
NiGHTS

Not a single mention of Elemental Gearbolt? :(

There are too many great game soundtracks, so I'll list some composers first.

Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy, Blue Dragon)
Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono, Xeno)
Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts, Legend of Mana (They're not all Square-Enix, I swear!))
Yoko Kanno (Nobunaga's Ambition, RO2)
Kenji Ito (Seiken Densetsu)
Hitoshi Sakimoto (Ivalice games)

That was a lot of Square-Enix, but they're the only composers I can name off the top of my head. Other games I can think of:

Shadow of the Colossus
Panzer Dragoon
Metal Gear Solid
Sonic Rush
Katamari Damacy
Star Fox
Super Smash Brothers series
Halo
Rogue Galaxy
Soul Calibur 2
Persona 3
Tales of Legendia
Advent Rising
KotOR

Turrican

Chris Huelsbeck has composed a bunch of masterpieces for this awesome platformer. Soundtrack is still available on the net.

Amiga 500 FTW

The best of them all; the first Silent Hill.

Other favorites:
Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 3
Silent Hill 4: The Room
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Soul Reaver 2
Legacy of Kain: Defiance
Resident Evil 4
Shadow of Memories
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy VII
Warcraft III

Some of my favorites:

Psychonauts
Revenge of Shinobi (anything from Yuzo is great!)
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Killer7
Gradius V
Starcraft
Ajax (an obscure late 80's Konami arcade shooter)

i'll go with the original metal gear solid. the sequels were a disappointment in that regard because of the inclusion of techno tracks.

I'm glad it got a mention. I wouldn't call it the best, but it's certainly up there.

So many reccommendations for MegaMan 2...I haven't played it yet. Maybe I should pick up the Megaman collection pack on the PS2?

Can I give another shout out to Granado Espada. Best original soundtrack I have heard in years. Someone needs to listen to this to attest this, this great OST needs to be heard to be BELIEVED!!!!!

I'm not going to throw out a predictable response here, but I will say one of the greatest mood pieces from a game. One that invokes perseverance, anger, dread and sorrow at the same time is.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver(s) (1)

City ( Suspense Version )

( wish I knew how to embed stuff )

Metal Gear series
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy X
Katamari
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Chrono Trigger/Cross
Shadow of the Colossus
Deus Ex
Bioshock

F-Zero GX
Super Metroid
Street Fighter 2
Zelda WW, MM, Oot
Metroid Prime
F-Zero X
Killer7
Starfox Assult(yeah you read it right)
Sonic 1
TMNT IV

This thread pops up all the time, but i always offer this mix i made. Its a 7 hour music mix of the best "modern" game music i could find. I have a couple of megaupload links that arent dead yet if anyone wants it. Just send me a pm and ill pm you back. Lot of work went into it and people seem to enjoy it. The one i have uploaded is split into 7 hour files with an accompanying txt file that has all the time, artist, and track info from what game. Its meant to be a seamless mix which is the way i prefer it but a lot of people like to have the individual music files which this doesnt have. Think of it as a sampler of the best.

Jet Force Gemini had awesome music.

Zelda tunes stick in my head a fair bit, but some of the Ocarina tunes were just brilliant. In particular Song of Storms probably. Also the tune that played when you met the Mask Salesman in Majoras Mask - can't remember the name of the tune.

Edit: Song of Healing

PMS sent.

Here's the problem with any "Best game music" thread- let's say someone reading this decides that, "Hey, I see ICO on here a lot. I should go to [the site with all the uploaded video game music on it that I won't name because I got banned once over it] and get the soundtrack." They do- they download the music and listen to it. The problem is that the music was written to be heard at a specific ingame moment . Yes, music can most definitely be enjoyed outside the physical act of playing the game, but without having experienced it in context, you're not really going to "get it".

Take the song suggested by NeonBlade- City (Suspense Version) from Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. He says that it "invokes perseverance, anger, dread and sorrow all at the same time". That may be true, but for me, as I have never played the game, when I listened to it, I thought "cool- a dark, atmospheric, moody piece". It was fine, a good song, but without knowing its context in the game and the situation in which I would hear it, I have no emotional connection.

Wow, very insightful and correct. I think anyone who judges music should take this point of view. Personally this is how I look at music too. This is how it evokes the kinds of thoughts that make posting on this thread valid, that is the ones who actually have experienced music in the proper manner.

That might be true, but music is also better listened to outside a game. The sound effects from things like battles drown it out sometimes. Plus, the music might be better than the cutscene.

Well, basically all the great soundtracks have been covered multiple times and I'm much too lazy to list all my favorite soundtracks (it'd be a long list with a lot of commentary)

So I'll just mention 2 games here

1)Medal of Honor: Frontline- Such majestic music in this one. Operation Market Garden, Arnhem, Clipping Their Wings, and The Songless Nightingale are all top-notch songs. Very top-notch. Find them out and listen to them.

2)Shadow of the Colossus: Damn great soundtrack here. I just start humming all sorts of songs from here randomly. Here's a couple youtube'd

Revived Power- my favorite

The Opened Way

TO the Ancient Land-the opening and so majestic sounding

Interesting look on things. I can see this as true for the most part. For instance, the Arnhem song I listed for MoH. It's great as a stand-alone, but what really set the emotional chord for it was that it was the BGM for a level straight out of the final battle of Saving Private Ryan. Hearing it blare as you mow down nazis in a devastated Belgium town with tanks rolling around and the sounds of airplanes flying ahead is an added surreal experience you can only get from playing the game.

Same general idea for every song out of SoTC as well. Actually that's probably an even better example!

Everything else I could say has been said, so how about the original Lemmings? Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker in twangy digital guitar sound was the perfect soundtrack to go insane to.

This is a bump from a thread made many moons ago but been listening to so much amazing music from games over the years that I had to throw a few in here!

Turrican 2 (Amiga)
Killing Game Show (Amiga)
Xenon 2: Megablast (Amiga)
Ecco the Dolphin 1&2 (Sega/Mega CD)
Batman Returns (Sega/Mega CD)
Sonic CD (Sega/Mega CD)
Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
Halo Series (XBOX)
Metal Gear Solid Series (Playstation)
Sega Rally (Saturn)
Outrun (various)
Afterburner (various)
World Of Goo (Wii)
Bionic Commando (Nes)
Final Fantasy Series (Playstation/various)
Legend Of Zelda (Nintendo)
Silent Hill 2 (Playstation 2/XBOX)
Streets of Rage series (Megadrive/Genesis)
Shatter (PS3)
Castlevania series (Nes/Playstation/N64/Megadrive/Genesis)

In fact a ton of Sega games had amazing soundtracks. From 8-bit onwards there has been an absolute superb amount of creativity and music/tunes created throughout the years on various systems. Some of my favourites are from composers such as Chris Huelsbeck, Spencer Nielsen and Yuzo Koshiro. There are geniuses throughout the industry and it's amazing how much all of them have created something that adds so much impact involved in the games that we play! Would love to hear some of this stuff at Videogames Live!

Anybody into game music/soundtracks that may have missed some of the stuff on that list give some of them a try!

Any suggestions of some superb stuff that I may not have heard of?

Ridge Racer Type 4, the first game to make me import a soundtrack.

Remember loving some of the tunes from the original Ridge Racer games but lost track of the series later on. Will look into some of that.

I am dying to play this game. If it also sports a superb soundtrack then even better! With The Last Guardian on the way I hope Sony give the same treatment to Ico and Shadow of the Collosus and re-release them as they did with God of War 1&2.
