Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Yeah, got an order on the "first" batch with rush processing and overnight shipping. It was stuck on order verification for about 3 hours so I was getting a bit nervous.
Thanks, I was tired of looking at that site, lol.

lol, nice. I settled on the EVGA SC and missed same day by 9 minutes (12:09PST). Still hoping it transitions from packaging to shipped today!

edit anndddddd it shipped!!!

Yah, Newegg has been shipping my stuff even when I order pretty late in CA -- I think they use OnTrac and the pickup must be late.

It's weird seeing the 1080 being called 'a crazy card'.
Have people forgotten what real generational leaps looked like?
It's slightly better than the jump from the 780ti to the 980, but that was greeted with outrage back then.

All I want to do is play some Blood and Wine, but my nice new 1080 and Predator x34 don't get here until tomorrow night. This wait is killing me and it is maybe 24 hours.

780 Ti to 980 showed about < 10% performance gains in most titles.

980 Ti to 1080 is closer to 20-30% gains.

Completely different.

After you factor in the almost Fury OC level headroom?
It's got nothing to do with selective memory, I've witnessed enough GPU launches to be throroughly unimpressed by the last two gens and their execution.

If you need an upgrade then it's a good one. If you don't then, then you don't. It's pretty simple. No, it's not worth moving from a 980Ti to a 1080.

That's beside the point.
'Back then' there was a reason to upgrade between the generational flagships.
Today it's segmented and milked till exhaustion.
Smaller chips are used, the bigger ones are held back for months, meanwhile the prices are skyrocketing.

This is pretty much my thinking. Might just wait for the eventual 1080 Ti. There's gonna be one. I'm sure of that.

This isn't the generational flagship. That will be the 1080Ti whenever it comes out. It will almost certainly be a huge jump from even the most beastly overclocked 980Ti. There is also the Titan series that didn't used to exist in the past.

Compared to a 980, the 1080 is a massive leap. It's only unimpressive if you're coming from a Titan X/Z or very well overclocked 980 Ti, but if you are, why are you looking to upgrade not even a year after dumping a ton of cash on a bleeding-edge video card?

I feel like I'm talking to a wall here. I'm out.

Whatever keeps you happy.

Expectations are different then they were in the past.

People can think and say it's a crazy card even if it's not as big of a leap percentage-wise as some generations were in the past. It's a single card that can run just about anything maxed out at 4K with playable frame rates. That's pretty crazy, especially when you consider the relative low power consumption.

The costs of making the chips appear to be skyrocketing to be fair, not a surprise they're trying to milk each generation.

Yep, agreed. For 7xx owners, this is an awesome and completely worthwhile upgrade. I dont think I'd say the same for 980 Ti owners, but it's substantial for everyone else.
980Ti owner here, I agree, I didn't plan to upgrade until 1080Ti or later, but I have a friend who's in need of a card and is willing to buy mine for a great price, that is why I'm upgrading.

Surely you're not talking about the 1080. You're a liar if you are. Well... I guess it's whatever you define playable.

I would definitely consider 30+ fps playable if I were the type of person to prioritize resolution over performance. The 1080 easily gets 30 in just about every high-end game at 4k in the benchmarks I've seen. More often than not it sees averages over 40, 50, or even 60 fps.

Personally, I prefer higher frame rates, which is I will be using it with a 1080p 144hz G-Sync monitor.

He's being dramatic. Just ignore.

Yes but what about

IT'S A WONDERFUL WORLD
IT'S A WONDERFUL WORLD

Don't you miss that?

I ordered my Gaming X without Rush and just Super Saver Shipping. I'm going to let them take their leisurely time to send it to me, might even have UPS hold the package at the distribution center, just so I can buy myself a few days to see if I can snag a less expensive 1080 and then just reject the package with the Gaming X in it.

I feel like I'm talking to a wall here. I'm out.

Is there any comparison out there for gaming x vs the strix OC? The price difference (at least we're all assuming based on what they should cost), is very substantial and on paper the strix appears to be the slightly better card.

Won't pretty much any 2 slot GPU fit? Maybe some ITX cases have limited height but I'd expect most to support 10.5" long cards, which most of the 1080s seem to be - the EVGA classified is taller than normal, and several are 2.5-3 slots thick, but eg the EVGA SC and others should be fine.

My bitfenix prodigy can take 13" cards and tall ones due to the motherboard being horizontal. Only limitation is thickness and I think I have to stick with 2 slot max.

My case fits about 9" max... currently rocking the Zotac 970

Was able to meet the UPS driver and get my card!!!

Stable at 2000mhz so far, hasn't gone above 77C.
Not bad. I would be happy with 2k.

Anyone else feel like these board makers just started producing these cards at the beginning of the month. It feels like they are so damn disorganized on actually having these things in a warehouse and ready to actually sell to the masses.

It seems this is exactly what happened. Tough to gauge demand but shortage seems to be more on the supply side at this point.

You must have some strange sefinition of maxed out and/or playable

Does anyone know a good way to snag a non-FE 1070 card? When do we expect them to launch?

Blood sacrifices, prayer, F5 built for at least 200 billion clicks, luck, or save stress and just plan on getting one a few weeks after its launch.

Hopefully these makers don't run around playing their street dick games with dates and availability like they are with the 1080.

Watch, it'll be even worse... Lol.

What are some of the real world examples of what people have been able to achieve with their Base/Boost overclocks? And is that with the Founder Edition or the manufactures versions?

2000 seems to be what you should realistically hope for in games that arent power hogs. In those titles you will probably throttle down to high 1800s. Custom boards with more power headroom can hold 2000ish if you get a good sample

Do you really think so?

We're all looking at the same benchmarks in the FE reviews in the OP, right?

Plenty of games getting well over 30 fps (more often 40+ or 50+) at max settings and 4K resolution.

My EVGA GTX 1080 (FE, sigh) is getting here tomorrow :) That's the only card I could find in stock here in Spain that wasn't ridiculously overpriced. I mean, it was overpriced, but not in a ridiculous fashion!

Ease my mind, GTXGAF: FE cards don't melt when you use them and the fan issues have been solved by the latest driver, right? I won't be OCing any time soon, if that's any difference.

you wont hold a boost clock at stock power and fan settings across all games but the card isnt in any danger of melting

Some people like to act like 30fps is not playable, I don't know, it's strange. Considering we're talking about 4K at max (or near max) settings, the performance of the 1080 is great, I'd certainly be happy with that.

This is on a Gigabyte G1 card, I could probably quite easily push 2k and keep it under 80 and keep the fans low.

Has any site done experiments with significant memory under/overclocking? I'd be interested in knowing how bandwidth limited (or not) the card is across games.

I'm OK with that. As long as it performs better than my 970, I'm happy. I'll be playing at 1920x1080, so hopefully the card won't be running constantly at full potential.

No, it's not worth moving from a 980Ti to a 1080.

I really don't know what to do...

I have 980 Ti Gigabyte G1 and I don't see many reasons to move to 1080, except one:

the noise.

I hate the fan noise of this card.

This is what I heard when i play:

980 TI GIGABYTE FAN NOISE.

And with The Witcher 3 is even louder.

Probably, if I'm lucky I could buy a 1080 w/o this "problem".

Any suggestion?
