It's still continually being brought up so I'll give my 2 cents: It's possible people are speculating wrongly about the Dan Patrick tweet. He posted another generic verse an hour after that.

There is no doubt there are people on the right who are ok with gays getting killed, but in this case I don't think he's condoning the mass shooting or that there is even a correlation.

I'd like to see a statistic on the number of atheists who oppose homosexuality. I think the number would be close to 0%.

As I said earlier, my atheist brother is an unapologetic homophobe. Arguing with him is like arguing with a brick wall.

So you're forgetting the "icky" factor. An atheist can still be very uncomfortable with the concept.

Bullshit he's covering for himself.

No way he's that tonedeaf. I know Dan Patrick he's EXACTLY the person that would condone this.

As I said a few pages ago, looks like a classic case of scheduled tweets gone awry. The guy's probably asleep, and will wake up to a raging controversy.

Went to sleep when the reports were first coming in about the shootings and never would I have imagined that the attack would be this devastating. RIP to all the victims. =(

Once again, fuck guns. 50 dead/50 injured, a classroom full of dead children, third world violence destroying communities in Chicago, and yet nothing gets done ever.

"Console war discussion" is very different in comparison to this thread since those subjects often have absolutely nothing to do with the threads in question. This story is already being covered by many of the major US news outlets in regards to gun control, hate crime, terrorism, religion, etc... and it will only get more coverage once the politicians jump in. It's part of the story and should expected in this thread. I understand for many of us, these different discussions can be annoying/distracting from what we personally want to discuss, but we shouldn't be pushing them off to a gun control mega/community thread dumping ground either just because "there's no solution we can all agree with".

It's not just because "there's no agreeable solution" its because it derails the thread. And i know you say it's different but it's very analogous. Console wars shit is never just people saying "xbox sux!" in the middle of a god of war thread. It's threads that have some controversial undercurrent when it comes to gamers and people devolve it into ps4 vs Xbox by taking sides based on whatever the news or quote is. It's on topic but it's a different argument that is impossible to conclude and takes over the thread. In that sense, it is the same.

As a foreigner there's nothing I can say that's been said already so many times. A ban on the civilian possesion of guns would make your country such a better place to live in. For the sake of past and future victims of gun violence I hope you all realise that sooner rather than later.

I expect you to continue debating about mental illness and consumption of violent media forever though.

No mental illness arguments here. I'm just not sure how that ban of firearms accounts for the 350 million guns that are already out there. Do they all disappear?

No. It kinda isn't.

looking at how many nations are allowing same sex marriage,I'd say it is.
of coruse it's nowhere near enough, but as i said before, changes needs time..get back at the early 2000 and such an idea as same sex marriage being legal would have been preposterous

i get your hurry, but if there was a mean to speed up the process, you's think we would already done it,and not only against homofobia, but any kind of discrimination or culturally transmitted hate

we should give up, let the islamic terrorists have their caliphate and whatever the fuck they want. pull all troops out of Syria/Iraq/Afghanistan/Saudi Arabia/etc and stop bombing them.

then maybe just maybe these terrorist mass killings won't happen every few weeks or months.

this can keep going on for decades and get much worse unless we give in.

People are lashing out at anything because the current shooting goes against the narrative that left wing politics stand for.
1. religiously motivated
2. Will be used for the Muslim debate
3. Shooter targeted democratic base (LGBT)
3. Shooter was an trained security guard
4. Registered democrat http://voters.findthedata.com/l/28019600/Omar-Mir-Seddique-Mateen

So trying to shift focus on a religious Twitter post from a republican on a Sunday is just blindly lashing out when everything you stand for comes into question.

Is this a joke post? This really isn't the time for joke posts.

He should get on Twitter then and make that clear/condone the killings.

Oh God I heard about this as soon as I woke up this morning. Oh god what a nightmare.

This has got to stop. We need some fucking gun control in this country.

Ugh Im so sick of religion, the world would be so much better without it.

Ok, let's dispel a talking point I am already hearing in the midst of this tragedy.

"If the shooter is Muslim then it is terrorism, if he is white they call him mentally insane!"

I don't doubt the media gets this wrong too. So let's clear it up. "Terrorism" is not determined by the identity of the shooter, but rather by the goal. If the shooter has a socio-political "goal", then it is violence for political ends, aka Terrorism.

So this guy is probably a terrorist, given he specifically selected a Gay nightclub. As is Dylan Roof, for shooting up a church based on his racist and confederate loving views.
Someone like James Holmes, who shot up a movie theater for no apparent discernible reason and made no real claim of a political view or belief? Not a terrorist, just insane.

I know sometimes the media is biased (like not calling Dylan Roof a terrorist as much), but not every mass shooting is terrorism. This, apparently was so it'll be called as such.

Since the perp is said to be Muslim, this is surely going to be coined an act of terror.

Perp being Muslim is the only qualification it seems.

This is being investigated as a "domestic terrorism" event.

And, no, being Muslim is NOT the only qualification. For example, the shooting at the black Charleston church by a white supremacist is also classified as a "domestic terrorism" event.

Man the difference between Clinton and Trump's reaction to this is night and day.

Clinton:

Trump:

Trump can't even express condolences and then immediately gets back to attacking Clinton.

Can we not make this about Hillary vs Trump? We have tons of those threads all the damn time. We know Trump is a shitheel. No one expects him to make a smart comment, especially here.

There's something way more important to discuss: Gun control.

Posting this again because of the urgency.

If you live in Orlando or can travel to Orlando, hospitals are in urgent need of AB, O-negative, and O-positive blood! Please donate!

God, I wish I could go over and donate, but I sure as hell won't get any support or transportation from my folks. This happened in my state, in my own damn neighborhood.

The US would need to actually witness the murder of 500-1000+ children before anything gets done. Even then it wouldnt be enough. Like was pointed out, livestreaming would probably be banned instead.

It is about who the victims are and their influence. If someone went ballistic towards politicians in D.C. shit would change real quick.

You're in Orlando then? Wonder if anyone else on GAF is and can help you out. Don't feel bad if you can't though, the thought counts as well.

That first tweet is not some innocent coincidental oopsy-daisy. "You reap what you sow" is the clear message and the timing and target is intentional.

Some laws did change but you're typically not going to see massive change on a federal level as that's not how gun laws work in the US.

Gun laws changed in NY, CT, and I think CA. A few changes elsewhere.

It's going to have to happen on a state by state basis. But considering this is getting tied to terrorism in the media I don't think there will be much political fuel to push for gun law changes due to an act of terrorism.

Right or wrong I just think that's how it'll play out. There will be changes but in the long term. Like, after we are dead long term.

Have they closed the gun-show loophole yet?

As a non US-citizen it blew my mind that you can literally go to a private gun-show and buy a gun from a third-party without any checks. There were even criminals there paying a proxy to buy the guns for them.

The documentary I saw literally had proper gun sellers with stalls, selling the same guns as private sellers there, but one had to perform checks and the other didn't.

You will never get rid of guns entirely, but there are some bizarre laws and other aspects pertaining to applying for gun ownership, that surely need clearing up?
