Mass shooting at Orlando gay nightclub [50 dead, 53 injured]

This is being investigated as a "domestic terrorism" event.

And, no, being Muslim is NOT the only qualification. For example, the shooting at the black Charleston church by a white supremacist is also classified as a "domestic terrorism" event.

Sure, Dylan Roof was labeled a domestic terrorist by the FBI, but how many news organizations went out of their way to avoid saying it?

Perhaps we could take the political issues to another thread? Those of us that live in Orlando would rather keep this topic around the shooting itself and not a debate that leads to Hillary/Trump discussions. Thanks.

This is sad to hear, but I'm never surprised anymore. The USA will live and die on the hill that is reckless gun ownership for as long as I am alive.

RIP for the dead. Prayers for the families and the wounded. And may everyone brace their conscience for the immediate mass media shitstorm, as well as the inevitable failure to take positive action.

Word has it the blood ban has been lifted

Hopefully this will make it permanent

I could be wrong but I remember reading that blood tests don't always reveal the presence of HIV, since it takes time for antibodies to show up after one is infected.

It takes about 6 weeks for a fairly reliable test, and about 6 months to make 100% sure the antibodies are not there.

Twitter , Facebook and Youtube reactions are disgusting. People are such vile scum.

I don't understand how social media accepts these kind of comments.

Have they closed the gun-show loophole yet?

As a non US-citizen it blew my mind that you can literally go to a private gun-show and buy a gun from a third-party without any checks. There were even criminals there paying a proxy to buy the guns for them.

The documentary I saw literally had proper gun sellers with stalls, selling the same guns as private sellers there, but one had to perform checks and the other didn't.

You will never get rid of guns entirely, but there are some bizarre laws and other aspects pertaining to applying for gun ownership, that surely need clearing up?

It's what happens when you let 50 different states make their own rules. It's nothing but a giant clusterfuck.

Ok, let's dispel a talking point I am already hearing in the midst of this tragedy.

"If the shooter is Muslim then it is terrorism, if he is white they call him mentally insane!"

I don't doubt the media gets this wrong too. So let's clear it up. "Terrorism" is not determined by the identity of the shooter, but rather by the goal. If the shooter has a socio-political "goal", then it is violence for political ends, aka Terrorism.

So this guy is probably a terrorist, given he specifically selected a Gay nightclub. As is Dylan Roof, for shooting up a church based on his racist and confederate loving views.
.

I don't remember the media calling Dylan Roof a terrorist. I understand the point you are trying to make but that is not how the media plays it up. The Fort Hood shooter had a history of mental illness and because it was a brown man it was immediately called terrorism.

Anyway, if its a moot point if the fucker declared allegiance to IS.

This kind of shit infuriates me:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/06/12/omar-mateen-id-d-as-orlando-killer.html?via=desktop&source=twitter

The senior law enforcement source reports that Mateen became a person of interest in 2013 and again in 2014. The Federal Bureau of Investigation at one point opened an investigation into Mateen but subsequently closed the case when it produced nothing that appeared to warrant further investigation.

I think we're fast approaching a point where people are going to be fine with restricting liberties for people on these lists.

Let's not signal-boost random idiots on Twitter saying idiotic things, it's going to be hard enough as it is to find relevant info on the story.

It goes hand and hand, really. One of them is rational, thoughtful human being, and the other is proposing wiping out gun-free zones.

If this truly is an act of terrorism, Trump gets a boost from this.

What's going to be sickening is watching both him and Clinton try to wrangle the event to fit their needs...meanwhile, 50 people are dead.

CNN: Shooter known to FBI. No indication he was plotting attack. One of hundreds suspected of being ISIS sympathizers on the FBI's radar.

How does one get a job in security while this information is known? Just kind of a side debate, but this is a failure in my opinion.

Fucking disgusting man.

I hate the gun laws in this fucking country. I cant stand it. I hope the people responsible for this burn in the deepest depths of hell for eternity.

Unbelievable.

Just.. unbelievable. I'm LGBT and currently, temporarily staying in America. This and the recent bathroom bombing make me feel wary of going to public places.

I can't believe how deep the hate goes. It's so upsetting, startling and abhorrent that issues like the gender identity and sexual orientation of other people can actually drive people to take lives. Even if you believe it's horrible for whatever reasons, even if you think we might go to hell for it- isn't that exclusively our problem? We're not trying to push some alternate agenda on the 'common folk', aside from mere acceptance. Why would we?

We're just, well, trying to be ourselves, trying to love who we want to love. Why is that such a bad thing? Why is it even a big deal?

Not everyone checks the news.

And while this event is absolutely fucking horrible in every single way, the world doesn't stop turning.
People need to make YouTube videos, open shops, go shopping, walk dogs, etc.

I agree that more people need to realize what's going on in the world and watch news more..

People still sticking up for guns and pointing at other things. My goodness, I just don't get it. RIP to everyone.

It's terrorism, ties with Isis, the same as the Paris and British attacks, legality of guns not the issue.

Probably some sort of plausible prosecution thing. They cant ruin his life based on the suspicion alone

Goddamn. Just woke up to the news. Just awful to hear. Why can't we all just live and let live? There is no reason 50 people had to die. No reason 53 others had to be injured. Just because people can't live and let live. Just damn.

Just got caught up. Truly horrifying stuff.

So is CNN really saying the shooter pledged himself to IS before doing this?

Depressing stuff man. RIP to those lost and my thoughts with their families
