Xbox One S: 40% smaller, 2TB, 4K for movies/tv, internal PSU, $300

People are gonna be so confused with the more powerful Xbox One rumors, and now this with 4K video playback being advertised.

Really interested to see if releasing a Slim and a more powerful console within a year (possibly) causes any problems.

That new smaller controller is very interesting.

My wife finds the Xbone controller very uncomfortable, but she LOVES the 360 controller. Hopefully this new S controller will be the perfect Xbone controller for her, and people who have the same experience as her.

PS - I also still think the 360 controller is better ergonomically than the Xbone.

are there any indications that the controller is smaller?

I expect it to look rather similar, design-wise.

When you're going for a unified brand you're not going to make two wildly different looking consoles.

Black has been retired until the Scorpio because it's the best. No gloss Xbox hardware team!

I need a 4K console for my TV, even if just for video.

Slim looks nice, if PS4k is not this year or the slim doesn't do 4K video like the Xbox Slim .... I am going to have to get one.

I traded my X1 last week for a drum set.
If this leak is true, that trade will probably go down as one of the best decisions I've ever made.

it's cool that the PS4 is smaller and it does look quite nice but to be honest it's build quality leaves a lot to be desired, it feels quite cheap and let's not pretend it isn't loud as hell.

the xboner is huge but at least it feels like a nice premium piece of tech and it's nice and quiet

This guy right here gets it. I forget who it was, but somebody ran a test on the db and temperature and the X1 ran cooler and quieter i think. Could be wrong.

I'm very glad they didn't, I love neat cable management.
If the PS4 became quiet, you would honestly take an internal power brick with the current noise levels? The power brick can easily be hidden.

I basically have to use my Gold wireless headphones at all times when playing games.

Get ur ps4 fixed then. Because from standard sitting distance, i never ever hear my ps4. And ive had 2 of them.

I will be waiting for the Scorpio to release next year. I wonder if this will support Dolby Vision HDR, because with Dolby Vision HDR is kind of competing against HDR 10. I know that the new LG and Vizio 4k tvs support Dolby Vision HDR. Also with Dolby Vision HDR it cannot be updated via firmware if a 4k TV or media player does not support Dolby Vision HDR because it uses a special Dolby Vision chip.

If I didn't hear frequent reports of high noise levels from others, I honestly would. At this point I am holding out for the PS4K and hoping they take noise levels more into consideration.

Considering I can't hear mine, no I wouldn't trade that.

So is the xb1 slim 14 nm shrinked parts so it will run cooler, or is it the same as Xb1 and will hot like Ps4 ?

To me a slim should be using shrinked but same parts, otherwise cant see the point

Guess we will find out soon enough....

I never understood the "loud console" argument. I mean with my tv volume or surround sound on I never hear my ps4. I mean how low does the volume be for users who complain about it being loud be?

I have my PS4 sitting on my desk less than 5 feet away from me and i've never ever been bothered by the thing making noise. You dusted yours?

Sure it spins up the fans a bit when i'm in-game but nowhere near loud. My Xbox 360, PS3 fat, PS3 slim are all far, far louder. I don't get the hyperbole myself about these so-called jet engines.

So no, I am really happy they kept the power brick inside for super neat cable management.

My PS4 honestly doesn't make a lot noise? So having an internal power brick was nice. Glad the the XBSlim is the same now.

They are not mutually exclusive... No devices in the last decade have an external power brick, you can have both low noise, heat and still not have external power brick. Having a huge external power brick is laughable and reeks of poor design.

My PS4 is a jet engine. It's quite annoying and to drown it out would have to have my system uncomfortably loud.

The parts that are shrunk make up like 0.5% of the volume of a console

How a black version could looks like

Which is why I asked if there was a point in getting this if it didn't have UHD Blu Ray. TVs in 2016 and beyond should come with Dolby Vision support in their apps so if Microsoft and Sony don't support it then... not good.

Looking for the price. 2TB and 4k BR is good, smaller site is Excellent (OK was simply too big for me)

Dead Rosina 3,4, quantum break and (hopefully) scalebound could make the deal for me but I am looking for the price

I've cleaned out the dust from the side ports, but I've never attempted to clean the inside of dust. I would be so happy if cleaning out the inside made it quiet.

If you'd like, I could post a video of my PS4 playing a movie and playing Uncharted. It is louder than my 360 was, and that was often compared to a jet engine without complaint.

That would seriously concern me, the Xbox 360 is probably the loudest appliance I ever owned.

Nice look, hope it does well. XB1 obviously needs a jumpstart right now. Hope this is it.

Myself, I'll wait for Scorpio........maybe depending on what that finally becomes and if I have a 4K TV at that point

Two things I am confused in this thread: 1) why are Sony fanboys in here just to give negative comments? you don't like MS/Xbox - we get it and
2) on the flip side, what is with the hyperbole about the PS4 noise? Yes, I can hear mine from time to time, but it's not that bad and usually only notice it about once during a gaming sessions - all this stuff of "a jet engine taking off, etc" is just lol

I thought Linear PCM was better than bitstream? I have both my PS4/XB1 set to LPCM w/ my 5.1 receiver based on the advice I read here.

Whichever is better depends on the receiver.

-- Linear PCM is raw uncompressed audio. A decent receiver will take that Linear PCM stream and send that to your 5.1 or 7.1 speakers. Because it's uncompressed you cannot send Linear PCM across an optical cable, you need an HDMI connection. If you're using an optical cable to transmit audio, you'll need to send audio as bitstream.

-- Bitstream is compressed audio. There are several codecs for compressed audio including Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, and DTS-HD Master Audio. If your receiver is not compatible with DTS-HD Master Audio, it'll take the DTS lossy track instead and send that to your audio channels. Also, Dolby TrueHD tracks must include the lossy Dolby Digital track for the sake of backwards compatibility for older devices made before 2009.

Note:

Even though Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio are compressed streams, they are lossless. If your receiver supports these codecs, bitstreaming these tracks is equivalent to the Linear PCM track in terms of quality and audio fidelity.
