Can someone explain how all the Xbox consoles will play the same games? They kept saying this but it's not clear what it means.

  1. Is MS going to mandate that all Xbox games release for both One and Scorpio?
  2. Will the Scorpio games be identical except using higher res assets?
  3. Will devs have to build and test two different versions of each game?
  4. Will the two versions share the same achievements?

1. likely to an extent. VR won't be possible on the One.

2. No idea until we see something next year.

3. Think more like PC graphics settings and shipping on the same disc/download

4. Yes, they won't be separate entities.

So... what are we looking at for pricing?

One S - 299
One S 2TB - 399

so... Scorpio 1TB is maybe 499 and let's say a 3TB Scorpio is 599?

That does seem reasonable?

think of it like a PC, there is no more 'console generation'
But console games are specifically optimized for the consoles that they target. At some point, no one will target Xbox One anymore. The question is, when will that happen? 2020? 2022? 2025?

My only question is what is the purpose of this console if exclusives are all to PC and you can presumably build a better PC for the same or less money?

Other than that - neat. As much as I'm out of consoles (leaning that way) it's interesting to see the landscape change and an arms race start.

Doesnt Sony plan to release Neo this Year? so why do people expect Neo to have the same Specs as a console that will release 18 months from now with hardware components that will be cheaper in a years time than what Sony has to pay and build in THIS YEAR ?!

PS 4Neo wont match Scorpio specs . These consoles will be released one entire Year apart!

Announcing a hardware revision 18 months before it comes out...wow.

didnt Nintendo do the same with Wii U and the Wii Sales crashed horribly?

MS is effectively conceding this generation to Sony. Not unlike MS to just abandon a product and move on to the next thing. Moreover, with Project Scorpio they aren't abandoning Xbox One/Xbox One S, but they are heavily betting on their console being the most powerful in the market come 2017.

I wonder if game historians will consider PS Neo/Project Scorpio to be a new generation. I certainly would. MS has is in "game on" mode.

Really?

Are you going to stop playing new games for a year and a half?

Me? No, I own an Xbox One.

I'm talking about potential customers that don't already own an Xbox One. Microsoft just let all those people know that they should save their money until next fall, when Scorpio will be released.

Damn. This will destroy the PS4 Neo. If this is indeed 6TF then it more powerful than my gaming PC.

I might be tempted to ditch my PS4 and move to Xbox as my main console. Sony needs to beef up the Neo specs if they want to compete with this.

Actually a beast.

I can't wait to see the meltdowns when Scorpio holds a comfortable lead over the Neo in terms of power. Gonna be a lot of people flipping their own fuckin' scripts.

Honestly I'm pissed off. I got a Xbox One last Christmas off my partner and so far really enjoyed the offerings.

Now they've announced this Scorpio which I knew was coming anyhow but I was hoping to have an idea what it looked like or the pricing for it.

Plus I can get all these games on my pc, what exactly am I supposed to do with the black box in the corner of the room?

So for the next 18 months minimum I basically don't need my xbox one anymore and if I can't afford a Scorpio on top of a 1070 (more powerful than a Scorpio) and I've got Vive, PSVR and and Neo, what is the point of a console at all by Microsoft? Including the one I own by them.

Honestly I like the exclusivity of being in a console family, Microsoft killed that.

MS is going for the software market hence, their games play on the W10 and their consoles, smart move imo

By announcing the Scorpio 18 months in advance Microsoft is essentially telling their customers to hold off and wait for something better.

I really don't follow the logic behind this announcement.

Because that isn't what they are saying. Only extreme enthusiasts pay attention to E3 firstly and we already knew about Scorpio anyways. Then they are letting people know what's on the horizon to bring excitement to the Xbox brand which badly needs it. I was on the verge of selling my Xbox one and stopping support for the brand. Now I know if I buy games for xbone they will still work on a future, extremely powerful console. So Atleast in my case, the announcement kept them a customer.

Actually a beast.

I can't wait to see the meltdowns when Scorpio holds a comfortable lead over the Neo in terms of power. Gonna be a lot of people flipping their own fuckin' scripts.

When Scorpio hits my ps4 will go back of the bus unless neo comes close to Scorpio.

Either Microsoft are taking a huge hit on this thing or its gonna be expensive as fuck.

Eh? If this is more than $399, I'll eat my hat. Price per GFLOP has dropped significantly in the last year. No one will buy my Titan X for more than $250. By end of next year, 6 TF is a realistic spec for a console.

Forget about Sony, wonder how nintendo will react to all of this.
In terms of power or revisions? Because they have been doing revisions for a long time now. The difference is that now they will start making hardware revisions too (like the New 3DS, but more packed).

I'm not sure about power though, I think they will stay out of this battle.

Next Gen is really happening next year with the big three starting everything.

What the hell happened this Gen? This Generation feels super short.

Really impressive specs for this beat. I do wonder if perhaps they announced this too soon if its not coming out till late next year? Seems a bit brash and maybe a little too early considering its more than a year away from release.

Guess I should offload this Xbox One somewhere in the nearest future and maybe get a discounted Xbox One S somewhere down the line so I can always be able to play Rare Replay or MCC!

I see no reason to get this over the exact same thing Sony is doing since there are no longer exclusives for it at all.

Lot of crow for those who didn't think MS would talk about Scorpio at all, sabotage sales etc, and you're crazy to think that they would mention it. Then to those who thought it might be a brief sentence on it only. Then to those who thought no fucking way they'd mention specs at a press conference, no way would they talk tflops. Not only do they do all that, mention 6tflops three times and more, they mention memory bandwidth to boot lol.

So incremental updates is the new thing, right? So does that mean I'd have to pay £400-500 every two or three years just to keep up? Not my idea of incremental. Don't like it or I'm missing something. Is the hardware itself upgradeable like a PC?

£400 every four years sounds more than reasonable for me personally.
I'm sick of these long generations and people probably spend close to that on upgrading their PCs anyway?

I hope devs are okay with pushing Scorpio and scaling down the graphics for the older stuff. should be easy to do

If I build a PC now will the Xbox Scorpio be more powerful???

it depends what PC you build now. You'd have to build a 1070-1080 based PC to be more powerful right now. So a high end PC to beat that. But next year when Scorpio comes out, it'll be much more mid-range to beat that spec.

Ok still dont change the fact that if someone has a fat one they are not gonna run out and buy an s when the new ones right around the corner....still losing sales or someone who wants to play xbox games but hears a new better more powerful console is on its way thats gonna enhance them said games. They arent likely to shell out 300 when they can just wait...

Agree to disagree.

They are so gonna let that Xbox One compatibility with Scorpio games slide.

Not buying that for a second.

Cool that Scorpio will be fully backwards compatible though!

Side note: 6TF will not be all that impressive come Holiday 2017.

Maybe not impressive for high-end PC users, but DEFINITELY impressive for a home console.

Calling it the most powerful console is such a crazy reversal. All within this gen alone.

Sony loves calling themselves the most powerful. Curious to see if they will let it slide or try to top MS.

To clarify, in terms of power:

Xbox > PS2 (PS2 Won)
PS3 > Xbox 360 (PS3 Won)
PS4 > Xbox 1 (PS4 Won)

Right?

You see where I'm going with this? History has shown us that the most powerful console does not always win the generation. PS4 is the first generation where the actual strongest console also managed to be the generational leader. You don't need to have a ridiculous machine to compete as long as it is strong enough to handle the demands of the current technology.

I gues Sony can completely rewrite their presentation now to present Neo to make sure it has better specs. Maybe they will film some new videos to counter everything and add this in tonight as well.

Right guys? RIGHT!?!

That system is a monster though, but at what cost?

Well if what House said was true they won't talk about Neo tonight. Would be nice to be surprised though.

Why? As long as the PS4K isn't allowed to have exclusives, Nintendo shouldn't have to worry. The PS4 is gonna hold the PS4K back, which will hold Scorpio multiplats back.

Too me it looks like the thought behind Scorpio is mainly to have the most powerful console on the market.
It will the deliver the same graphics as Ps4/Neo just at a higher resolution and framerate.
So they're basically aiming to take away the advantage PS4 had.

On the other hand, it looks like its in Sonys hand to then initiate the next actual visual jump(not only res and framerate) with the Ps4 about 1-2 years after Scorpio.

All I remember is people viciously underestimating the price of the Rift even after guidelines had been stated. Here they say nothing about price but specifically mention "the most powerful console ever made"

I'm hedging my bets right now. $849 and not a cent lower.

Before whatever subsidy programs might come into play.

It'll be similar to how a PC scales games, only instead of targeting many different setups, developers will only have to worry about a few (Xbox One, One S, Scorpio)

So then each game will be a single SKU? There won't be separate Xbox One and Scorpio SKUs?
