I am really curious how this thread would have turned out if the idea of iterative consoles hadn't come out before.

That's not me trying to call hypocrisy on anyone, I am actually legitimately curious.

I am being a bit hypocritical, as I thought about all this and have been mostly against it. But beings I bought my Xbox One and PS4 in 2014, I am thinking that a launch in late 2017 will not be so bad. As I will not make the move until some time in 2018 anyway. I can deal with four years.

To be honest I ain't interested in gaming at 4k firstly I don't have a 4k tv and secondly most 4k tv's suck at gaming due to terrible input lag. What I want is extra graphical effects, textures, AI,realistic physics and animation even realtime ray trace lighting may be possible with that amount of horsepower in a closed box. Think about that E3 reveal for the division game with the souped up animations, physics and debris flying around everywhere that's what we want. But please for the love of God Microsoft don't just waste all that power on upping the resolution!

Pfft!

This like the time madam zaroni predicted, I'd grow up and get married one day. You're KILLING me dragon!

I've been right about;

- State of Decay 2
- Dead Rising 4 (bar whatever the hell is going on with the exclusivity now)
- Forza Horizon 3
- Xbox One S
- Skyrim Remaster
- Xbox "Play Anywhere"

I might even be forgetting one or two. And that's so far. Sony's conference is still coming.

I don't know much about GPU's but what's the cheapest GPU you can get that's 6TF and around 320gb/s

I can't imagine this console will be another PS3 in terms of price. Microsoft likely gonna take a hit on it.

That said, generations are why I like consoles. I like buying a box knowing it will be supported for at least 6 years and that every game I play on it was built with my hardware in mind. Iterative consoles have me seriously considering building a gaming PC.

What difference does it make? New PC hardware is constantly releasing. You'll feel left behind even faster with consoles leaping in power every couple years.

lol 5 year generations is dead, technology is moving too fast, time to accept that 'console generation' concept is dead

Doesn't matter how fast technology moves, the market always speaks and Microsoft and Sony will be forced to go back to the long generation cycles. It's not just about supply.

So then, why buy a Xbox One S?

I was considering it, but no point.

There are people buying a ps4 now although Sony said neo is releasing. Because it is forward and backward compatible and you can play right now, for a cheaper price than the new consoles.

Likely?

I received these last month but wasn't comfortable posting them here

Wow...that actually is really interesting. Nice find!

Well they certainly brought the fight to Sony, proclaiming it will be the most powerful console, guess this means Sony is going to delay Neo, ha ha.
Don't understand how no-one is left behind though. How are VR games going to work on an X1 now? I'm also pretty concerned with how things are going to go. Does this mean X1 is going to play games forever? Who and how is it decided when consoles get outdated if not? Is the X1 going to hold back games for a long time now, if not forever now? It's why this move is both bad and good honestly.

If it is going to be like Neo, where games have to work at a base level on PS4, then they are pushed higher in terms of resolution/frame rate/graphics, and then they move onto PS5 and PS5 neo, awesome. If it's going to be PS4, Neo, Trinity, etc., etc. and PS4 always has to be supported first, I can't see it being good in the long run, not to mention confusing people. That and I can't see devs being happy making sure it always runs on the lowest hardware, where most people will probably want it to run and look the best on the latest or perhaps 2nd latest (Depending how many machines will be around in a "gen").

Have to say they did handle the announcement well though, they did understand people would be pissed in them announcing a new console, in a pretty short time from when X1 launched, glad to see they understood that. Still need to prove/clear things up for me though.

I still only see 12...
But thanks I didn't realise there was a video! tbh I thought the conference wasn't on until later and this stuff was being put out early.
No worries, my initial impression from the pic was also 12 chips but then I rematched the video and there are full 16 there.

Neo is likely Sony's answer to Xbox One S. Refreshed specs to handle 4k and HDR video and in Sony's case PSVR.

I'm certain Sony will drop their answer to Scorpio by Spring 2018. The only question is, what will this strategy do to current sales?

This

We don't know what is in Sony's pipeline. We could be overhyping Neo which is basically a Xbox One S with a VR kick and Sony's version of Scorpio remains unleaked.

I don't see why.

Like...breaking cycles makes this huge increase in power meaningless.

It won't change the fact that xbox has lost all foothold in japan.

Won't change that big devs will still go for the console which has the most people and will not abandon huge portion of the market just for power. The parity will stay here unless you want to torpedo sales.

Won't change that the xbox one and the ps4 still exist and will still be getting games

The scorpio is even more baffling to me than the neo which was already a bad idea to me. Simultaneously boasting high specs and high prices while promoting shorter iterative cycles like phones where significant jumps in power are less important

Exactly. Plus most of the games that they announced will be on Windows 10 &/or Steam anyways. There's really no reason to pick up a Xbox console at this point over a PS4 or upgrading your PC.

If a console is just going to be as expensive as making a PC, if I don't care about the platforms online community and can have most of both libraries via Steam or Origin, why even bother getting a console?

From the great words of Rorschach, "Hrm." I currently own a solid PC with a 980ti but I miss the under the TV box set up. I guess I have plenty of time and with the Play Anywhere initiative I could easily transfer over my games. Just wondering what you guys think? I have a 6700k 24GB ddr4 ram and a 980ti so how does that really compare with the Scorpio? I got that HP deal posted on NeoGAF a while ago. I use my MacBook for work and this new PC is just for play. I do miss having a dedicated box. But playing Forza 3, Recore and Gears 4 on full blast will definitely hold me over until the Scorpio. What would you do?

PS: I'm a slave to capitalist consumerism and like anything new and/or shiny.

Your 980TI is probably more powerful than the Scropio. Not greatly more powerful, mind.

Salty as fuck. How do you know what specs PS4K will have? You just comment to provoke and Im surprised you are still around

Woah relax. I'm just going by the rumored specs. There are a lot of Kneejerk E3 reactions everywhere not sure why you're singling me out lol.

This new strategy MS have taken actually works pretty well for me. Every E3 I say to myself "Ok MS, sell me on the Xbox". This gen I haven't seen anything on the Xbox that made me want to go out and buy a new console. I game on PS4 and PC, now that they seem to be releasing all their games on both the console and Win 10, whatever interest in the Xbox console I had is gone. But now when I see a game that looks interesting but not enough that made me want to buy a Xbox for it I can get on Win 10 like Sea of Thieves and I think MS is just as happy with that. This way I can continue gaming on PS and PC and enjoy the best from both worlds. Win win

Is there any chance Sony could change their plans for the NEO to rival this?
It seems like a horrible mis-step to fall that far behind, especially if they are planning a similar release date.

I guess ~$500 for a typical barebones pcpartpicker build, but the scorpio GPU sounds different than the RX 480 if it has 320 GB/s bandwidth. Maybe it's using a downclocked version of the next step up?

More likely Polaris with GDDR5X - 256bit@10Ghz is exactly 320GB/s

Sure as a bare minimum they can increase clock speeds to reduce gap.

Messaging on this was so strange.

"No one is left behind! Games on your old disgusting X1 will work fine!"
"This thing is a monster, we can finally realize our artistic visions and make actually good looking games, graphics are king!"

Like 90% of the quotes emphasized how important the extra horse power was, then a couple comments get thrown in to say no, actually not that important though don't worry.

Most accurate thing I heard Phil say about it was 'beyond generations'. It's trying to move toward a new model. Probably an ok idea, and will probably work out. Can't say I like it any though. :(

All that said, I'm glad we'll have consoles that support top notch VR sooner.

I am really curious how this thread would have turned out if the idea of iterative consoles hadn't come out before.

That's not me trying to call hypocrisy on anyone, I am actually legitimately curious.

I brought this up in a different thread, imo whoever announced/leaked the iterative console first was going to get the most upset and confused reaction.

We are in the acceptance phase at this point... until the price is announced.

I still don't believe this is what the mainstream audience wants. People who bought an XB1 or PS4 aren't going to flock to this when they can play the same games on older consoles without forking over $400-$500.

People like those in house at the conference at us on NeoGaf, sure - this is the stuff we want, but we only represent a very small fraction of the overall market.

I think Sony and MS are misjudging this. I'm especially worried about games being held back because of compatibility demands, negating the need, or even usefulness of having an upgraded model.

I'm sure they have a plan, and I hope it works. But with the current gen less than 3 years old, it seems too soon.

As a member of this NeoGof, I agree with the mainstream audience. This is some bullshit. Hope these new iterations fail miserably.

The announced the project behind the console with testimonies of the developers that want to work with it.

It was not an official console announcement at all, but sure jump all over that fact and make it into a bad points...FFS GAF

The problem for MS with this move is that if Neo comes out and this year, and is as successful as the PS4 it puts them in a really tough spot. That power difference won't matter then. The PS4 + Neo will have a user base that dwarfs the Xbox user base. The Xbox One isn't setting the world on fire now, and sacrificing a years worth of sales would be rough in this scenario. I think it's a huge gamble on both companies.

Sony must be worried about a console that's 17 months away. It's all over now rip PS4 and the 40+ million and growing gamers.

You had a good run.

Yep, Sony legit shook.
People genuinely believe that Sony was caught off guard by this?
It leaked to GAF weeks ago, and it is fairly safe to say that they have had details for longer.

Honestly, who didn't know about most of those? Majority of that has been talked about for months. In any case, it's whatever. I was just hoping for that particular announcement.

I'm guessing that this is for people who don't pay attention/care about the PC.

it's time to move from the console perspective to the ecosystem perspective, if you have a powerful W10 PC, you can just buy xbox games if you wish

lol 5 year generations is dead, technology is moving too fast, time to accept that 'console generation' concept is dead

Yeah but it doesnt feel like game development is remotely keeping up with tech spec upgrades.

All these delayed games and devs feel/look like they are struggling just to keep up with it.

If this causes Sony to cancel/delay the Neo in favor of some improved specs, then great. All-the-better for everyone.

The Neo seemed like a timid half-measure. "Yeah it might not really be able to run old PS4 games at a locked 60fps, but it will like have some better textures and lighting and stuff." That's really not worth purchasing a new console over.

Glad to see Microsoft going out on a limb to push forward with 60FPS and 4K. If Microsoft and Sony are looking to leap forward, I'm cool with buying both their upgrade systems.

This just shows how ignorant you are in knowing what it takes and how much hardware you need to make VR very good. VR takes a lot of horsepower to run at the resolutions and framerate that won't make you sick. Clearly, you don't understand the requirements for high end games in VR and how much horsepower they require to run just decently.

Sorry if I upset you, and possibly ignorant to the Bethesda jokes that have been their way since Oblivion on. ;)
