Just announced, devs making games now for Xbox One can toggle a scaling option for Scorpio.

At the same time the same person that said that, doesn't seem to know about any guidelines to devs. Geoff asked "can they make exclusive Scorpio games?" answer was "it's up to the devs. I guess they can. Let's talk next year, ok?"

Welp, the head of Microsoft First Party just told Keighley they announced Scorpio to give the developers a heads up.

Bash at Sony?

Not sure how considering Sony has dev kits/documentation out and MS has literally nothing.

The idea that they did this reveal early, and it isn't related to the fact that Neo is coming out soon and they chose to highlight "true 4k experiences" and "premium VR gameplay" is hilarious.

4K games dont make a lick of sense when only ~15% of the market can make use of it.

Then the hardware, as good as it might sound to some, would barely be able to hit 4K. I mean it could, but at the exact same graphics and fidelity the XB1 has now.

All that trouble of making "a monster" console, just to appease the above?

Bash at Sony?

That's a completely fake reason.

Companies give information to developers under NDA without announcing it publicly all the time.

Good. This will lead to more online fan boy wars, which will lead to increased cases of carpal tunnel, which will lead to less fanboy wars.

My logic is undeniable, sound, and completely rational.

I like the way you think! I also like that you've planned for long-term repercussions.

I suspect the 4k is restricted to system menu screens, HUDs, and video content. You're not going to get acceptable FPS at 4k with these specs, at least not on anything with current graphic levels of detail.

In the following link, which is Phil and Major Nelson talking about the Xbox One Slim, they also talk about the Scorpio.:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtFUTiwPcQs

The interesting part in the video is when Phil is talking about Scorpio and how it is targeted to be a 6TF 4k device. He said they wanted that power to make true native 4k games, but that developers can decide amongst themselves what to use those 6tf for.

I don't doubt that we will see games at 4k/30fps, but 4k/60fps will be a bit of a challenge. What I can see is 1440p games down sampled to 1080p/60fps to help improve IQ even more with that much power.

Some games may run only on Scorpio according to the Microsoft First Party Head

The question is, who would want to do that?

No big AAA pub would want to restrict their consumer base like that.

Outside of MS funding I can't see any of the big ones going for a Scorpio exclusive. And if MS funds it, a lot of their user base still stuck with the Xbone will get mad.

It's a lose lose situation for everybody. I doubt there will be exclusive Scorpio games for a long time.

Shannon Loftis kinda confirmed that Scorpio exclusives games will happen.

I'm sorry but what I've read from that conversation is that they don't have the guidelines defined already. You can't seriously believe Microsoft will let devs make what they want in their development ecosystem, especially after saying on the press conference that nobody is left behind.

To me especially considering Shannon saying "let's talk next year, ok?" in the end of that conversation is that MS is still defining what they are going to do in the transition process, which seems to confirm the leaks about this being a reaction to Sony Neo dev kits on the hands of devs.

By the way if anyone believes Microsoft can only inform devs about their plans via their E3 press conference, I don't know what to tell you...

VR can as there is no VR on Xbox One. So this was already known. But compatibility was already verified by Phil forward and backward and MS.

She was pretty clear that developers were going to have the choice, it didn't sound like she was confused or didn't understand the question. She was specifically saying no to Keighley on all titles working on both consoles.

All VR titles.

:)
It actually sounded like not only was she completely confused but also didn't know what she was talking about throughout that whole interview. VR is already known to not be compatible. Then again if MS said forward and backward completely and it turns out to not be. Then we can all laugh.

If you believe the 2 weeks than ya pretty much this.

Does 1440p work for TVs, should aim for that and 1080p.

I totally expect exclusive Scorpio games, maybe not immediately but no way are they holding back and going for just eye candy upgrades.

Well yeah. To be honest I think the biggest casualty of the Scorpio won't be the Neo, but PSVR. MS virtual reality will be way more impressive than Sony's when it finally launches.

I wouldn't be surprised if MSVR is just the occulus. They've already been partnering with them. But, yeah, that'd be more impressive than PSVR.

Yup. Been saying this for a while.

If you can't release PS4 Neo games that can't run on a PS4, then the Scorpio isn't getting exclusives (by that, I mean games that can't play on an XB1) outside of VR games imo.

It will probably be up to devs whether they choose to make Scorpio only titles. Though I don't expect many to go down that route until a year or so in (when it has sold enough units). Microsoft may continue to support both platforms throughout Scorpio's life.

doesnt that literally mean that Scorpio is "next-gen" according to MS?

oh wow chick just said that devs MAY be able to make Scorpio only titles... fucking wow.

Yep.....sounds like that have no model in place here... Scorpio is the wild west of PC gaming inna tidy box under yr TV.

It's pretty much just a pre made windows game box. Ms have exited the console race

From what my bud knows due to his cousin working at nether realms is they have had a Neo dev kit for awhile now. Whether or not that's true. But I don't think my buddy would lie about the awesome shit his cousin gets to do.

I think she was very carefully parsing her words. She said all games being made right now will be forward and backwards compatible. Then when pressed on whether there will be any games that will be Scorpio only, she then backpedaled and said it was up to the game development community. Based on that I'd bet on forward/backwards compatible titles at launch, but Scorpio only titles soon after (not including VR).

doesnt that literally mean that Scorpio is "next-gen" according to MS?

Sounds more like they are fully going iPhone model - continual incremental upgrades and some software will work, and some software will require new hardware.

There aren't 1440p TV's so you won't see the extra pixel information. However downsampling (i.e. rendering at a higher internal resolution than the display) is one of the best, if most expensive, ways to eliminate jaggies and generally improve image quality. However, I doubt we see many games rendering at 1440. It will probably be 1080 with better asset quality or 4K.

I really don't understand what is going on between Microsoft announcing 18 months out and indicating Scorpio could have exclusive games plus Sony rushing devs to make games compatible.

Are they both losing the plot? Is there a third party in the shadows that has spooked them?
