If you're in the market for a console now, you're unlikely to wait another 18 months. Also choice.

Well I certainly would not buy a console that would have a successor in a year and a half. Especially since I don't know how much an improvement the new one is visually, or what price it has.

Excellent, we need more verified sources here on GAF. Hopefully a mod will be contacting you soon and you can get that tag.
He said he had information from two fairly high high up people at Microsoft. That's great news, the more vetted sources we have on GAF, the better.

LOL!

So he's gonna get contacted by a mod to prove he had a verbal conversation at E3... so he can then be considered vetted in case he were to randomly strike up a conversation again with someone at some point in the future...

Has the question of ESRAM been brought up in this thread? Since Scorpio will be backwards-compatible with the Xbone I guess it will have the same 32mb Esram pool along with the new specs, right?

It has been brought up in several other threads and we still don't know how they will do that.
I still think that they just put it onto the die. It shouldn't be too big then and 32mb of a fast scratch pad is something you can even exploit with Scorpio.

For once, I'm trusting MS on face value.

Zen cores are bigger, I'll try to find exact figure plus Zen cores have larger L caches. A full Zen 4 core should be 200-250 sqmm, so you remove some logic or trim and figure you could get it down but its still quite a bit bigger than Jaguar.

From an AMD point of view it would make the most sense with the trying to push their custom SoCs for it to be zen.

At 14nm 32mb of esram is going to take less than half the die space. If they can somehow open it to the CPU then Itll be really useful.

Is scorpio just the same games in 4k. Do you reckon there will be options for higher fps on a 1080p tv. I have 1080p oled and don't want to upgrade.

The alternative is for Sony to have an even faster machine out on the market, with Microsoft having no answer to it. As it is, Scorpio is going to be later than Neo, but people will now know it's coming.

Ugh I am not happy about this announcement. I think they should have just announced the Xbox One S for now. Who is gonna buy that when Scorpio is already around the corner? I think it would have been smarter going the Sony way and just saying that something is coming up.
All that talk about "Xbox One games being compatible across all three systems" makes it seem like Scorpio games might not play on Xbox One? With that huge leap in computing power that ought to be the case I guess?

I didn't mean that it shouldn't exist with the Neo coming, but I'd have announced it like this around the same time as Sony. (I know Sony has said it exists, but that is it so far, right?)

The only thing I find funny about all this is ms have spent the past few years telling us res doesn't matter etc games are game yet in the Scorpio video all they did was talk about power and res haha it's like all that shite before was never said now power and res matter more than ever and they'll be shouting most powerful console in the build up to launch. Who'd guessed it gaming exces talk utter shite they don't believe themselves.

Actually the past few months all Phil has been talking about is how happy he is with the current Xbox One. So happy he's replacing it twice.

In all fairness, they made better games and it didn't seem to matter.

So they went after what seemed to matter.

Well there's certainly a fine line. I mean, it sounds like Neo is going to be announced at Gamescom. If MS did the same then they'd only delay their announcement by a few months. This way they made sure they got there first, and weren't seen to be copying someone else.

Revealing it this early and with almost no information makes no sense to me. How would this not cannibalize Xbox One sales in the coming 18 months?

Sales have been more or less cannibalized by the PS4 already. There's no saving the XB1, anymore, even though it's a great console.

I suspect many will buy the XB1S, if not for the games, then for the 4K player.

It's always mattered that's the point, they all talk out of thier arses all of them do. There's three things that sell gaming hardware, games price and power and ms was on the wrong side of two of those things. They have corrected one and the price is the next thing they have to get right with Scorpio.

Man... I don't know how Xbox is ever going to pass, let alone catch up to PlayStation. What good is a powerful console if you don't have the games to back it up? After that Sony conference, it feels like they never will. Sony has such a lead and a solid relationship with the base, there's no way I see them screwing it up to the point where people abandon and jump over (or back) to Microsoft.

Sony talked about games that are late 2017 and even 2018 releases. Microsoft's furthest title from the conference was Halo Wars 2 which comes in February 2017. They will show what they have planned at their own event or at E3 next year. Also exklusives don't matter anymore. What sells consoles since 2005 is having the superior versions of multiplatform games that everyone wants to play. Exclusives are nice to have but they aren't the system sellers they used to be.

Don't forget that having the cheapest console helps a lot. See: Assassin's Creed Unity-bundle.

There's lots of great games on the XB1 platform. Also, this whole "I don't see how they will screw up" can be applied to tons of market leaders through out history. IBM, Commodore, Nokia, Microsoft, etc. It's not uncommon. Besides, Microsoft doesn't have to pass or catch up to Sony, in order to have a succes on their hands.

Whether or not the Scorpio is the way to go in order to disrupt the market remains to be seen, but claiming that there's no games, doesn't really make sense.

True. But if they are of using on bringing out 8-core Zen CPUs to compete with the Intel broad well/skylake-e range of enthusiast CPUs, then their focus may not be in integrating it into an APU.

Considering the seemingly slow migrating to 14/16nm from AMD and nvidia, and the first chips being small (300sq mm or lower), I'm not sure MS could cover the cost of a large Zen CPU on an APU and the potential loss of GPU space it might mean. I could see two alternatives
1) they go with a two chip solution with separate CPU&GPU. This could increase costs but if yields are low on 14nm it might be more cost effective to have two small chips than one big one. Might also be some issues moving away from an APU as you might lose the shared memory or heterogenous nature.

2) they stay with jaguar on an APU but boost the clock speed and spend most of the die budget on GPU cores.

My guess would actually be (2). Partly because of the BC with Xb1 and if they are pushing higher resolutions then that will burn GPU cores without a huge increase in CPU requirement. A game running at 1080p/30 on Xb1 would run nicely at 4K/30 on Scorpio with the same CPU requirements.

Beefed up Polaris.

Vega is far too expensive to implement due to HBM2.

Still will be a huge boost - Vulkan/DX12 is going to shine!

Polaris small die size so the price I'd estimate $449 or $399 if the yields are solid by then.

Polaris full (40CU).

Vega will have way more than 6TF.

Ha right with the current timeframe Zen seems like a lock though would you expect them to be doing Jaguar again? Or even Puma?

What?! I mean WHAT? Do you have to buy a new game when you switch from AMD to Intel?
I mean, if you are unsure how stuff works, then ask. But don't spread misinformation.

Slow down. There have been cases and times in the past when AMD processors lacked instructions that Intel CPUs supported or vice versa. While in general PC computing this is not a problem, if a certain Xbone game used an instruction set or a function on a Jaguar CPU in an unexpected manner that is not supported on Zen for whatever reason, it could possibly be a problem. I did not say that it will be a massive problem, I just said they would be risking backwards compatibility issues. Even in PC computing shit like this happens, modern CPUs can break older games, causing you to disable certain instruction sets, functions, features or number of cores, despite being completely backwards compatible.

Since I can get all the games on PC fuck Scorpio and fuck the S. Bye

Completely unnecessary shit post. Very classy guy.

So many PC master race posts here. It's pathetic and juvenile. It's great that enthusiast PCs push the latest and greatest pixel counts and framerates, but there IS in fact room in the world for tech that caters to a different audience. If you arent said audience, kindly dont shit up the thread with posts like this please.

OT: I'm also in the camp of waiting on this and skipping the Xbox One S, but I can see why they're doing both. The 500gb sku of the OneS will be 299 but likely more like 249 with promotions and such, which (along with base PS4) will cater to the budget-conscious.

Xbox ScorpiOne and PSNEO will cater to those console enthusiats with more disposable income. It does feel a bit early to release it at the 4yr mark, but not THAT early considering consoles' history prior to the unusually long 7th gen.

It's quite clear Microsoft is trying pulling the end of the current generation forward...and I don't think Sony is anywhere near ready to respond. In that regard a concentrated effort on PSVR and PS4Neo seemed to have done more harm than good.

I'm not saying Sony do not have plans in place for a generational step but the majority of resources have been diverted to two products that can't compete. PSVR this year, fine. PS4Neo next year...when Scorpio come out.

What?!

So yeah, I'm a little worried. I've been a PlayStation player since the PS1 and this is the first time I've felt Sony might be outgunned by a Microsoft responding in such a way that it now has the best hardware cycle. Of course this is just an emotional reaction...so I'll eagerly wait more news from Sony to temper my mind.

Fair play to Microsoft mind. They managed the rough and come out the other end fighting. It's what this industry needs. I'd be very interested in a supa-dupa console.

EDIT: Actually it's not as bad as I thought. PS4Neo to Scorpio, I mean.
