Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

If you ordered those on Amazon.com, you're going to be waiting a very long time most likely. It doesn't seem like they actually have any real stock shipments lined up and they're just taking preorders.

Nah, I'm in Sweden so I'm hoping stores here will start getting the cards soon.

That price is in euros (but I'm assuming it includes VAT).
It's unavoidable the FE cards will drop under 3rd party card prices, considering the performance is a step below 3rd party coolers as reference cards have always been. FE card price until now has just been early adopter tax.

I have an EVGA SC on order for 720e or just 3% higher. I expect the performance difference will be quite a bit more than that. FE isn't a good value at 700e unless you have some very specific requirements (tiny media PC case, SLI, etc.)...
Yup, includes VAT. FE MSRP is 789€ so it's pretty interesting the price already dropped that much when most people couldn't even get their hands on partner cards yet.
These are the words of someone who always has money for enthusiast-level GPUs. *no salt*

Either way, AMD may come out with a 1080 competitor in the Fall. I'm guessing that you'd call that mid-range, but it should still be enough to force Nvidia's hand if they are able to do so.
Actually the 1080 is my first enthusiast level GPU (coming from a 7870>970 upgrade path) :p but I guess nvidias pricing skewed my perception of the market a little bit. >200$ Cards are probably midrange and not entry level indeed.

does overclocking memory even provide any immediate benefits in framerate like overclocking core?

It does improve framerate but not to the same degree as the core clock.

Yes. You can run benchmark/stress tests like Valley/Heaven in windowed mode and watch your FPS increase with your memory OC.

One thing to note - I and many others are seeing that some higher settings on memory are actually causing lower frame rates. I'm stable at +600 but I find +500 produces a 5+ FPS increase in most valley scenes.

Yeah I've noticed going from 600-700 gives me frame drops, I'll try 500 and see if it's better.

Is 4K/60FPS possible with the 1080? I think I've decided against 1440p/ 144Hz / G-Sync since I don't play competitive games and fast-paced shooters (I mainly just play single-player games / RPGs). I just want visual fidelity at a stable 60FPS. If not, I can always wait for the 1080ti or whatever is next year's big improvement.

In my experience most modern games do require some setting adjustments to hit 4k 60Hz. (EG. Disabling MSAA, or in the most demanding games, using the "High" setting instead of "Ultra".) Obviously, this is dependent on how taxing the games in question are.

While the 1080 is a fantastic GPU, big Pascal is poised to be a monster 4K performer. If you're willing, I'd suggest holding out.

Based on Nvidia's previous release cycles, the Pascal Titan is releasing in Q4 this year, (November I'd reckon) and 1080Ti in Q1 2017.

for those that ordered the FTW from Scan, I was told they might get it in today but not guaranteed

Consider me surprised if they get any FTW this week or the next but you never know. OCUK updated their situation few hours ago and they are expecting first FTW cards early July now.

ouch. I imagine OCUK forums aren't a pretty place considering Ben from EVGA kept suggesting mid-June so they've been stretching them out day by day since the launch.

All I see is lots of people jumping from the FTW to other cards - can't blame them. Tempted to do so myself, the July ETA of OCUK doesn't bode well for my pre-order here in Germany. Unfortunately other partner cards are super sacrce and only to be found with jacked up prices so... I'll just keep the MSRP FTW order for now.

UGH, July, what the hell EVGA, what is going on?

I went for the MSI Gaming X from ebuyer. Said when I ordered that they were expecing to get get 3 of them on June 30th but I don't really know what that means or if I'll get one. I assume it meant they had 3 left to allocate but I dunno.

Do you still reckon the Titan/1080ti will be releasing this year then?

99% sure about the Titan, not sure at all about the 1080Ti. I mean, what's gonna push them to release this one if it'll be close to the new Titan? No reason for them to compete with themselves. Then there's also a matter of 1080 price which doesn't leave a lot of room between itself and $1000 Titan position.

Sent amazon a message to try and get any sort of ETA on my order. Their response:

I'm sorry for not shipping your item soon.

Looking into your order, I see that the "MSI GAMING GeForce GTX" is back-ordered. I’m sorry about this delay—we certainly didn’t expect that this would happen.

Unfortunately the supply for some items will be limited and they sellout quickly. Sometimes, unexpected fluctuations in supply can add time to our original availability estimate. Though the item is out of stock, we do list the item and receive the order.

Once we receive the order we will immediately contact the supplier to obtain the item. Sometimes as the case like yours shipped to failed to obtain the item.

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused on your part. I understand how disappointing this has been for you and this is definitely not what we want our customers to experience.

So we need to order your copy of item from a different supplier, and it will take us slightly longer than we anticipated to ship this item to you. I apologize that you were not notified sooner of this change in availability.

Although the shipping method is faster, it’ll still take some time to get the item. As soon as we receive more stock, we’ll ship your order and send you an e-mail to let you know.

If you'd rather cancel your order, I understand. To do so, visit the link below and click the "Need to cancel an item?" button:

In addition to our large selection, one of the benefits we try very hard to offer our customers is convenience. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience you experienced in this case.

We look forward to seeing you again soon.

We'd appreciate your feedback. Please use the links below to tell us about your experience today.

So, basically no info in that long ass email. They sold it having zero clue when they'd be getting them in, and if I'm tired of waiting, I should just cancel my order.

Ordered parts for a new computer, they sent everything today. Except my graphics card, up to 3 weeks queue before I can get it. At it earliest. Le fu. :|

I ended up canceling my EVGA FTW order from Amazon and found one an EVGA SC for the same price as the FTW. I Just bought it. Done with the hustle/hassle of trying to find a 1080.

I ran a benchmark with Rise of the Tomb Raider and 3DMark11 last night as I just got my 1080 in. Here's my 3DMark11 results:

ClXpHbBWkAA39AV.jpg

And my Rise of the Tomb Raider was averaging (1080p/Very High/SSAAx4/VSync) at 58fps with some dips down to 40fps. Does that sound correct? I just came back from a trip and I've had a total of 1 hour to mess with everything.

edit: Figured I should add the rest of my specs:

Intel i7-6700k (not overclocked)
Gigabyte GA-Z710X-Gaming 3
Gigabyte G1 1080 (not overclocked)
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB 3000MHz
Windows 10 64-bit
WD Black non-SSD

Just hold on to it while looking for places where it's actually in stock. Once you actually get one on order, cancel the Amazon order.

That's not on stock clocks is it? Like 6000 higher than my Palit out of the box...

wth? Is that 1080 heavily overclocked or something? That's easily 7k above my graphics score with OC.

if you think that's long to wait for something from Amazon try ordering the steam cards lol i had one order open for 3 months with NO delivery estimate.

I haven't been following the news around the 1080 so I apologize if this has been answered a few times already, but I'm looking to pick one up and had a question.

It looks like the only option at the moment is to pick one up from a scalper, but I was wondering if there is any word as to when there will be more stock at Amazon or Newegg as I always buy my stuff from there.

I guess I'd be cool with ordering a card straight from the company that makes it if any come into stock, but I'm not sure if it will be a matter of a few days to a week before stock replenishes, or if it will be a matter of months.

Stock arrives daily but it also usually sells within minutes so if you want to buy one say this week, you have to put up some stock alerts, follow threads like this constantly because people link in-stock items here, or just get lucky and open a product page at the right moment.

For stock that actually lasts for a while, we can only guess but at least few weeks if not a month? In Europe we've had some (non-FE) cards already stay in stock for hours at a time, even longer.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they never release a 1080 Ti. They basically have no reason to release it unless Vega is a smash hit. 1080 is selling like hotcakes at a very premium price, and even 1070 is head and shoulders above anything AMD will have this year.

My prediction is we'll see an 1100 series next summer/fall that is just a "refresh" of Pascal.

1170: Full GP104 with faster clocks (basically an overclocked 1080)
1180: cut down GP102
1180 Ti: full GP102

It'll be similar to what they did with 600->700 series.

What do you guys think of this? (price-wise)

I am still thinking about whether to get a 1080 or 1070.

I think it's over priced. I can get why you'd want to order all from one place, especially Amazon with Prime shipping, but the prices on some of those parts are over what other retailers would be able to do for you.

EG: That 6700k is over MSRP.

You should post here.

Memory Express. Order status has been "waiting for parts" since I made it, almost a month ago now.

Not necessarily a surprise, but still kind of annoying.

Yeah I was "Waiting for parts" on the FTW st Memory Express too and ended up cancelling it to get the EVGA SC ACX 3.0 from NCIX instead. Got it last Thursday and really happy with it.

How do you cancel an order from ME? Just call?

Yeah calling would probably be your best bet. I already had an open email thread with one of the sales rep (see my previous posts about Memory Express stalking me lol) so I asked him to cancel it which he did within the hour.

Are there any reports on how the different memory types affect performance? And more specifically in VR? I have someone who says the GDDR5X might make a big difference in VR because it should be especially good for higher resolutions, but VR resolutions aren't that high.

I bought a G1 and the OC seemed stable at 2063 core and 5400 memory. I played several hours of Witcher 3 this weekend and had no issues. Woke up this morning and the core clock seemed stuck at 1983. It would not change no matter what I set it to in afterburner. It would drop down during idle like normal but during load it just went to 1983 and stuck. Normally it jumps up to 2075 when its starting then settles down into 2063.

Anyone experience anything like this?

Memory types don't affect VR at all ;)

Memory bandwidth (which is a function of type) affects VR rendering just like it would affect normal rendering. I don't really see a reason for VR to be particularly memory bound (or the inverse).

Witcher 3 seems to the stress cards way more than any benchmark does in my experience. My clock also drops to just under 2 GHz in that game, while in others it's around 2050.

I also had to drop my core OC down to +100 because of TW3. Tried +130 initially and it was stable in 3DMark, Heaven, and a bunch of other games but showed artifacts in TW3.

In my experience Overwatch has coincidentally been the best stress test on my card. Better than Unigine, Firestrike, and Witcher 3. I can get by Unigine, Firestrike, DOOM, and Witcher 3 with a +100 core overclock, but I cant last more than 5 minutes in Overwatch before I get a video driver crash.

Witcher 3 is basically Furmark, it raises TDP like hell. If your clocks are dropping in Witcher 3 you've probably hit your power limit or nvidia boost hit one of its temp thresholds (62c, 72c, 82c etc) and is downclocking because you're running hotter or both. Well, boost 2.0 worked that way anyway.

I use Witcher 3 and more recently Overwatch to test my OCs. Benchmarks like valley and 3dmark aren't as good for testing stability. I can pass some really undervolted and unstable OCs in them.

Sorry I should have been more clear - it was not Witcher 3 specifically that was giving me problems - what I has seeing was the card locking to a single speed and not varying like I normally see it do. It was doing this in any 3d application. I just mentioned Witcher 3 since I had run several hours of that without issue.

Rebooting the system and it is varying again.
