I'm just really curious as to how Jobs is going to unveil this thing in a couple of months. Surely he'll acknowledge that most people have known about it's design and hardware features for a while. Will he just play it off like it never happened?

I guess he'll probably just spend less time on the "big reveal" and spend more time talking about the nitty gritty of the new features like ichat.
He's done it before. Premature Specification

All I wanted from the new iPhone was better battery life, to get faster, and have a better camera. Everything else I want from the software side (like a new look for the OS).

Looks like I will get everything I want plus a front facing camera that I will probably never use nor see the point of, but it should make the nerds happy that they get an extra feature for a week or two until they come to the same conclusion.

nah, now the nerds will troll the android threads and boast about there shiny new camera.

Please announce this bitch soon, because I have an upgrade coming in May that I've been waiting forever for since I'm still on a first-gen Edge piece of shit (though I got it for free).

Since it was lost 3-4 months from its reveal, what do people think the chances are of changes in design/hardware?
Steve jobs will take out the front facing camera to spite everyone.

There is going to be massive backlash if there's no camera on the front of the new iPhone now.

Before there would have been disappointment, now there is going to be rage.

Steve Jobs will implement Nintendo's friend code system in order add someone's phone number to your calling list.
A phone number pretty much is a friend code :lol

bingo. we already had a couple of choice posts here parroting the 'stolen' line.

couldn't have timed it better myself.
Yep. Like I said earlier when Liu Kang started going off about it. Of course Apple considers it stolen -- they're pissed about it. :lol This is a calculated move by Gizmodo -- this new story about the guy has been retweeted 2,000+ times AND they're giving a big fuck you to the it's "stolen" crowd. These guys are geniuses.

Apple makes solid hardware, shame I hate the OS.
The hardware and the software are fine, it's the company's attitude and its marketing and the zealots that it's created that I can't stand.

Reminds me of all the iPod touch 3G w/camera leaks and rumors.

Gizmodo was like "the touch 3G is going to have a camera and we have some pictures to prove it!" and then, at the iPod event, Steve Jobs was like "lol, no".

I haven't really noticed any Apple zealots since the beginning of the iPod era, just as I haven't really noticed Nintendo fanboys since the DS and Wii. There are just too many normal people using their products for them to stand out.

This design is way too Sony looking. Especially the volume buttons, they come straight out of recent Sony phones. It's definitely one of the weaker Apple designs.

I am surprised the 4th gen look so different from the iPad. I hope its a Steve Jobs leaked decoy to fuck with the blogosphere. Although I am pretty sure it's 90% real.

…

If Gizmodo and the person who found it knew that it belonged to this dude for over a month and didn’t return it—what do you call that? Temporary larceny?

Outing the guy wasn’t cool. Overworked engineer having a beer makes a human mistake and Gizmodo profits off of it.

FWIW, in the follow-up story Gizmodo claims that the guy who found it contacted Apple about it, got a support ticket, but they never got back to him about it.

This just show to me how Gizmodo is full of douche bags, I wish Apple would ban these guys from all their events, I couldn't despise such unprofessional people any more than I already do.

Where's that claim made?

I've read the article and no where do they say the guy filed a support ticket about the lost phone.

Ahuh. If I knew the name of the person who lost the phone, that's who I'd contact, not Apple fucking support. A quick google would give Gray Powell's MySpace page or Facebook page or something and then he could easily contact him using that. But instead he calls Apple support and then sits on his ass for a month?

It doesn't really matter how much time is left. The relevant question is: How far behind the finished design is this prototype? Of course, there's no way to know that.

You say that as if it's not pretty much set in stone when it will be announced.

Sorry, I don’t buy it because there are missing details here. He calls Apple Support of all things after knowing what he stumbles upon and seeings its owner on Facebook?

He tipped off Engadget and Gizmodo because he knew what he found and and eventually sold out to Gawker. For him to remain anonymous while Powell to be outed, ugh.

Since this little stunt, I don’t give any respect to the kids at Gawker: http://gizmodo.com/343348/confessions-the-meanest-thing-gizmodo-did-at-ces

I can already see Steve with his new iPhone on stage dialing up Cpt. Bald "it's magical" dude in the audience for the first public video chat.
Really? I bet he does something like video calling John Mayer or someone.

SJ: Here lets demo the video chat, my friend John is online lets try him.
*John Mayers face pops up*

SJ: Hi John!
JM: Hey Steve, sorry i couldn't make it out to California today to perform.
SJ: No problem John it looks like we found a way for you to be here with us anyway.
JM: Hah, next time I'm in town i owe you a beer, do you like German Ales?
SJ: Not my favorite To be honest John, well find something on Yelp. Bye John
JM: Bye.

SJ: so that's iChat, we think it's pretty great, you'll get to try it out later.

Well, not so much for the actual announcement since that's clearly coming in the next couple months, but for the release date. I just want to know when it'll be out, because I'm looking at a massive Edge ---> 4G upgrade when it does. And I wants that soon.

What is the upgrade plan that Apple currently has for 3G to 3GS (is there one)? I'm wondering what it might be like for this. I'm hoping not more than $200. That'd be really disheartening.

Front facing camera will just enable so many cool things, video chat is the last thing I'm interested in TBH.

Just like after the iPhone many high end phones started shipping without one, I think the iPhone will be the first phone to show how to make good use of such a cam... others will follow suit.

For example: iPhone frontal camera + MobileMe = damn phone burglars exposed.

Also I want a game with eye blinking as primary type of control :lol

I'd be shocked if Apple didn't scramble to get a press conference together for next month to show it off and formally announce it, with a launch in June or July.

They'd be way too stupid to not ride the publicity train for all it's worth, strike while the iron is hot.

Giving the details on the phone is one thing but Giz was real jerks for talking about the guy. They basically just ruined this guys ability to get another job in the tech sector.

Again, you say that as if the release cycle isn't something consistent.

Also, lol @ 4G.

As of right now - if you are eligible for a standard upgrade, the 3GS is $199 (16GB) or $299 (32GB). If you are not eligible for a standard upgrade but are eligible for an early upgrade - $399 and $499. If you are not eligible for either upgrade and buy it outright, the phone is $599 or $699.

There isn't a standard 'upgrade' plan from Apple though that doesn't result in a new contract.

the only thing that would shock me is if they change the way it looks (which i am sure they won't).

sure pictures got leaked but its no the end of the world.

thats true, they didn't have to be such jerks. is he fired for sure or is it still unconfirmed

For the love of god, neogaf, do NOT click those gizmodo links. Post the entire articles here out of spite. Do not give them any more traffic and revenue.

They just cost a man his job, maybe his entire career. Fuck those fucking fucks. Completely classless and that story did not need names and pictures. Un-needed story. I hope Apple sues the fuck out of them.

I went from loving gizmodo for breaking the biggest story in tech (maybe in history) to having no respect for them. Will never visit that site again.

"revolutionary security feature"

Apple is going to out the anonymous source by posting his picture and geolocation of his house at the reveal conference.

Actually Apple probably has a good idea where this guy is if they are the ones that remote wiped it.

You don't think Apple was going to figure out who it was anyway? Im sure they have a way of tracking which employee has which test phone, and judging by the fact that they remotely bricked it they could probably track exactly which phone it was. The guy was fucked regardless, Gizmodo just added insult to injury.

Not trying to defend Gizmodo here but I very much doubt Apple's decision will rest on their revealing his identity. They already knew he lost it.

You can try jail breaking your phone and selling it. Will probably get a decent amount--some guy just said he sold a 3G with 2 screen scratches and a cracked bottom for £225 or something, which is like $400.

Here's where the OMG conspiracy comes in. Apple admits that the thief is actually an apple employee as well and the whole reveal at the conference is the grand 'finale' to a large plant that shows off how well the new tech can protect your phone!

This was a private matter - this guy made a mistake that will now haunt his LIFE, not just his career.

Yes, they likely knew, but who would hire this guy now that everyone knows who he is? We all make mistakes, but we are allowed the opportunity to overcome them. This poor guy is handcuffed. No one in the tech industry will hire him and while he suffers, gizmodo gets richer with clicks. I would bet they already made ther money back.

He could have signed a NDA with apple and just took a package and walked away. Instead, he will likely lose an amazing job, an amazing career, and have his opportunities limited.

Potential future employers didn't, though.

I am waiting for the announcement of an exact release date so that I know when I can actually purchase the product. If it comes out in September, swell. It's impossible to tell at this point what scheduling changes the leak could cause, if any.

I thought 4G = 4G network rather than 4th gen. Anyone providing that in the U.S.?

My concern isn't apple finding out. They already knew, but by outing him, he has been given a scarlet letter that will follow him for his entire LIFE. Not just his career. This was un-needed. No one needed to know, it doesn't give the story anymore weight by knowing his name and some pics. The story was enough.

And to those who say people would have found out sooner or later, trust me, I know a handful of people who have been fired from jobs for worse things but found new jobs becuase the reason was well hidden and not brought up. This guy has no choice but to be defined by a druken mistake.

(sorry for the double post, using the neogaf app, can't double quote two people!)

Just for shits and giggles if I was him, I would have a applied for a couple meh jobs and made sure to mention I was the guy who lost this.
