Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Scan delivered my card! bye bye 780. A huge upgrade.

Can't wait to retry pCars.
Let me know how how it goes, I tried and had really low gpu usage, so was only slightly better than my 970 experience. I really want to fix that and get that game running good.

Sad state of affairs when a blatantly obvious price gouge opportunity goes out of stock. This intentional limit of stock to give the illusion of extremely high demand is pretty low, even for Nvidia.

How is it a price gouge? As far as I can tell, that's the MSRP for the item you linked.

That's the MSRP from MSI. It has a custom cooler and LEDs. Not saying it's worth that, but what are you gonna do?

Multiple monitors? 144Hz or above? Hardware acceleration on in browser?

Or in simpler words: Nvidia's drivers suck and have have done so for years when it comes to idle clocks.

Nothing was fixed with Pascal regarding idle clocks. If anything it's even worse because the clocks are so damn high now. Just few early adopters who got lucky with their setups reported some early successes.

got a 60hz and a 144hz multimonitor setup. My idle clocks are fine on GTX 1080.

I like that the stated reason for the Founder's Edition was that they were trying to cut down on scalpers.

Like that was ever going to fucking happen. They just made people wait another month and released a ghetto version of the real thing in May.

Consider yourself lucky. That's why it sucks, it's seemingly almost random when it works and when it doesn't. More monitors and higher Hz increase the risk of high idle clocks but even some people with triple screen setups have low idle clocks while others with two 60Hz monitors have high idle clocks. Connection types also have an effect, at least sometimes. I currently have 144Hz + 60Hz and idle clocks are in the 1200-1700MHz range (sometimes I use a third 60Hz monitor as well and then my clocks are completely stuck at ~1700MHz but it's summer/hot so trying to use less devices). With two screens If I drop the 144Hz to 120Hz, I get ~300MHz idle clocks.

lol. I was raised in a dump. You can take that pretty literally.

I decided a long time ago I would never live like that again.

I dunno, every time I buy something new and shiny I have this compulsion to clean everything first before I can enjoy it. If I don't then I just get stressed till I do. I can think of worse problems to have.

Mein got, and I though I was alone all these years.

Yeah, I was talking about these reports. 1080 upgrade seemed to fix the issue for quite a bunch of upgraders. We'll see, would be nice if it fixed my 1440p144/1080p60 setup.
It's such a weird thing to happen, I don't even know why it would run that high for showing the stupid desktop lol

Just because it's the MSRP set by the manufacturer doesn't negate the fact that they are taking advantage of the situation Nvidia created with the grossly overpriced and also under performing "reference" card. It's pretty amusing so far though seeing the false sense of extremely high demand for an under manufactured graphics card. :D

Yes, a company would actively hold back cards and not make money just to make it look like the card is more popular than it really is.

It's a new node, new cards and who knows how good the yields are.

I know you are being sarcastic, but you speak the truth with it, whether you understand it or not. The card is more desirable than with a proper launch. The monopoly is in full swing with AMD only competing with years old cards at super low pricing.

Yeah, no. Nvidia isn't selling these chips direct to customers or to their board partners at a loss. They're leaving money on the table every day they fail to meet demand. I don't think their shareholders would be very happy with them if they thought Nvidia was missing out on sales on purpose.

Yes. Demand disappears when there is a frenzy and shortage, silly me. They're not leaving money on the table when they know people will scoop them up as soon as they are drip-fed to the consumer, they are creating the frenzy so they can ovecharge for their mid-high end Pascal product. This is all paving the way for a new xx80Ti pricing that is even closer to the $1,000 mark.

My hype has deflated quite a bit. Nearly a month in and still sold out everywhere. Even if they're in stock, the price is so far off from the reveal MSRP, I'm not sure if I want to immediately buy one. Probably will.

Mine was delivered. Can't wait to get home and boot up some Witcher, Doom, and Overwatch! First time with gsync goodness, wonder how that's gonna be.

I still cant figure out how to get my FPS to display in pCars VR. Anyway I turned some settings up and it seemed to run fine during an hour of play.

Max temp 71c, max usage 77%. Card generates far less heat than my 780.

I'm sure someone else will chime in here, but that may be a tad hot for 77%? Have you play something 100% demanding to see temps yet? Maybe VR is different, idk

That's not how business works. They're not going to charge or make any more money on a GTX 1080/1070 tomorrow than what they could make right now.

That strategy would have been employed if they weren't in a position of almost complete monopoly on the upper end of the market. The pricing would have been $499 for the obviously low end reference solution and upwards of $600+ for OC/2-3x fan solutions. They have to create the sense that the card is selling at an incredible pace so people will accept the price hike without hesitation.

From what I've seen, gsync will make a big difference if you are sensitive to input lag. If you aren't sensitive to input lag, you may not notice much difference between vsync and gsync.

Just give it 1-2 months.

I love that my monitor has a setting where it displays the FPS for me in the corner of the screen. I eventually just turned it off since getting the gtx1080. At 3440 x 1440 I get a solid 60 the whole time and that number never, ever changes. So what's the point? Maybe tonight I will try and overclock it and see if I can get it to 100hz as advertised.

gsync wont make much of a difference in Witcher 3. You'll still get stuttering and non-smooth transitions with frame rate drops.

Hmmm hitting lows 80C on my new Strix. Room temp is probably 72-74F though.

Nothing wrong with that room temp. Are you hitting the low 80's at ootb speeds, or are you OC'ing further? If that's ootb, you'll probably want to think about an RMA unless you plan to put it under water or something.

Unfortunately there's been more than few reports of 1080 Strix having poorly applied thermal paste/pad. It's not a rare instance, it's a bit too common issue to ignore. Re-applying new thermal paste seems to fix the issue in most cases but there's a warranty void sticker on one of the screws so RMA might be the best/only option if you need it fixed. Of those cards affected by this issue, low 80C isn't too bad, there are reports of Strix cards going 90-95C with fans at 100%.

Asus proudly advertises their 100% automated production process and here we are, can't apply thermal paste/pad properly...

Yea, it's pretty much stock temps at that temp. I guess I'm going to have to return it. :(

I know it sucks, but that's what I would do. I've seen the same reports that Phinor mentioned. There's a good chance that it's a misapplication or under-application of the thermal compound, but if it's not...you'd do well not to get involved with anything related to Asus' customer support or warranty service. Much cleaner to just RMA with your retailer and get a new one.

I wonder if I should just get an evga instead, doubt they'll have a Strix replacement. At least with evga, I'll get plastic under the screws.

Who did you order from? Most etailers will hold a little bit of stock back for returns. I'd check with them and see what you're up against before making a final decision. Asus is a fine brand and they generally make really high quality products, it's just their customer support that sucks. I'd swap for another one if that's possible and won't take too long. Otherwise, yes- EVGA is always a great option.

I got it from newegg. Quite funny how I was speculating on getting Evga and the 1080 FTW popped up in stock at newegg. Ordered and going to return the Strix.

EDIT: Newegg had the evga 1080GTX FTW in stock a couple of minutes ago.

So I'm not getting a signal from the display port. I tried unplugging and plugging back in. It worked on HDMI.

NVM as soon as I posted I went and switched the port on the card and it came up.

Just using the mouse on windows after enabling 144hz is holy shit so smooth.

Come the fuck on Amazon/Nvidia. It's been more than a month now.

Just bullshit. I'm now out of the return window on my EK blocks.

I had $400 in Amazon gift cards, so I've got to be their bitch :-(
