Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Quick question, I just picked up a Zotec 1080 Amp edition (not Amp Extreme). Is it a solid card with good over locking potential, or am I missing out by not going for the Amp Extreme (or other 3rd party card)?

No major overclocking difference across almost all cards, it is all silicon lottery. Just find any decent AIB cards with good cooling you are set.

I have the metal gear solid 5 console and while its its the latest generation model, it still has a glossy red color on top. I wonder what other faceplate can look good on this. I don't want to buy dark red one and the color wouldn't match and I end up with an ugly looking console.

I think the MSI Gaming GPU would fit the color scheme nicely.

;)

Wanna ask this question once more for the top of the page:

Is the Zotac Amp! (Non-extreme) a solid card with solid overclocking potential, or would I be better off looking at a Strix or Amp Extreme?

Both of Zotac's Amp cards are pretty good, you might have slightly cooler temps and slightly higher OC potential with the Extreme but it's your choice if you want to spend the extra money on that.

As long as you don't get a Founder's Edition you're gonna be alright.

Man, after looking at 980 ti prices I'm just not sure what to do anymore. I've got around £1,200 to spend and with both an LG 34UM95 and a 1080 I'm cutting it very close to budget. The utter shitshow of prices (with UK prices being pretty much identical to the dollar) and availability is scaring me off the purchase despite knowing it'll be an amazing card for 3440x1440p.

How long am I going to have to wait for supply to level out and RRP to be reached? Because I'm more than willing to spend £600 on this if it means I'll be fine for at least 2 or 3 years. I'm just not willing to spend £700.

There are tons of cards that have an ETA of 29th of July on overclockers.co.uk so if we assume supply will be better at the end of the month, it may not be until sometime next month that prices will drop (just a theory). BTW, there are a few cards in stock on overclockers that are under 700 pounds, like the:

Gainward GTX 1080 PHOENIX Golden Sample - £679.99
Gainward GTX 1080 PHOENIX - £649.99
MSI GTX 1080 ARMOR OC - £638.99
Palit GTX 1080 GameRock - £608.99
Palit GTX 1080 Jetstream - £589.99
(the Gainward and Palit cards are extra tall/wide)

Not to mention a few Founder's Edition cards that are somewhere around the £650 mark.

reposting in this thread as well as 1070 thread: so if I'm going to be paying from $400-$450 for a decent aftermarket 1070 ... why not just save for a month longer and pony up the extra $200 and buy the aftermarket EVGA 1080 that is retailing for $620? Is the performance increase of a 1080 proportional to the amount of money spent over a 1070?

Wait they deliver to USA?

If so thats awesome, cause I cant find a Inno3D or Palit card in America.

To the bolded. I would say no. I'm in the same state of mind, but it's like 35% more cash for like 20% more performance. Kinda similar to the 970/980 situation.

Got my card yesterday. It's such a beast.

My backorder on Newegg (ordered on Wednesday) charged last night and went into packaging this morning. I would hope anyone else that pre-ordered has theirs on the way soon, too.

My new power supply and hard drive arrives today, so I'll be able to get those more difficult upgrades done today and the card won't take but a few minutes whenever it arrives next week.

I disagree with that last statement. I have the Zotac founder's edition and have had no issues with it. Core clock sits at +210 and memory sits at +525. With a decent fan profile ( 65% at max load) my temps run at around 68-70 degrees playing overwatch, witcher 3 and doom.

Blower is not nearly as loud as the evga 780 gtx i had prior to this purchase. So, at least with this FE, its been a fantastic card so far.

What's the best software for stress testing your gpu ocs?

There really isn't a best imo. I'd use Unigine Valley and Heaven since they're free, and if you have the full version of 3DMark you'll want to run all versions of Fire Strike (the stress test optionally). From there you just pray that it actually works in games too.

Wait, is the Zotac's Founders Edition different from the one that comes directly from Nvidia? I thought the FE was supposed to run hotter than that.

This freaked me out for a second. My Zotac Amp Extreme arrived on Thursday and I took almost identical pictures but couldn't figure out how to post them.

Junior members can't post pictures? I honestly don't know.

Juniors can't make threads and are unlikely to be given a second chance should they break the rules, but that's the extent to which being a junior differs to being a full member. Tinypic is blacklisted on GAF as it sometimes recycles particularly old links and the owner of Minus blacklisted GAF after being banned, so if you uploaded the images to either of those services, then that'd be why they weren't displaying.

If what you mean is that you're unaware of how to post images at all, then you first need to upload the photos to an image host such as Abload or Imgur, after which it's just a matter of clicking
insertimage.gif
on the Post Reply page and pasting the link or otherwise wrapping said URL in the [IMG] tag (e.g. [IMG]http:///www.blah.com/image.jpg[/IMG]. Some forums allow users to upload images when making a post, however this isn't the case on GAF.

Don't think it is as it looks the same as the one nvidia sells. I picked up the Zotac FE from newegg when it was in stock a few weeks ago. i paid the nvidia tax but i was replacing a 780 so i didnt mind. First thing I did was just increase the core and memory clock to what i saw on guru3d:

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_1080_overclocking_guide_with_afterburner_4_3,3.html

Then messed with settings using firestrike and the heaven benchmarks. My temps never got higher than 76 or so. I reduced the core clock slightly and temps obviously dipped a bit.

I then bit the bullet and purchased two new 27 inch monitors ( had a 27 inch rog swift and 2 23's which were the ones to be replaced). Plugged everything in to the display ports ( whereas before i had one on dp, one on hdmi and one on dvi) and the temps went down further.

I now run overwatch for a couple of hours and it never goes about 68. Witcher 3 it depends but usually peaks out at 70. I also play eve online and never higher than 57 or so. This gpu has eaten every game i have thrown at it without a fuss. And i don't hear the fan spinning up like an airport like others have mentioned regarding noise. This is without having headsets on. I hear my a/c unit; not the fans unless i go nuts on the fan profile but havent needed to.

Of course, this is all anecdotal, but i have nothing but good things to say about the Zotac FE. First time with a reference card as well.

I use free image hosting sites like imgur (it compresses the images btw). Then just put the link like this
and you're done.

So every game tested so far I have seen a huge performance bump over my 980 but Rise of the Tomb Raider. I can't even get a 60fps lock at 1080p @ very high settings. Witcher 3 is perfect at 1440p with ultra settings...

Double check that your AA setting isn't set to SSAA in RotTR. SMAA or FXAA are the ones you want.

Yep, 2nd paragraph is where I fall. Thank you!

Thanks for the heads up, I'll look and see if any of those fit what I want. However, right now I'm seriously considering preordering the Evga Superclocked on Amazon since it's a nice £600 and I really don't mind not getting it for a month or so. Any indication on when that might arrive?

Wait, is the Zotac's Founders Edition different from the one that comes directly from Nvidia? I thought the FE was supposed to run hotter than that.

Nope, there's just a lot of FE FUD on the internet. People seem to like repeating things they heard but didn't experience. There's always going to be variability with case temps, ie ambient temp.. and can vary by card. My anecdotal experience matches what was posted.

I've only ever bought MSI or EVGA cards. My plan is a new PC for Vive action. Price differences aside what should I get?

MSI Gaming X or EVGA FTW?

EVGA has been pretty bad at actually getting cards out to people, depending on when you buy it that could be an annoying factor.

Otherwise the MSI is one of the most quiet cards right now and depending on you luck with the chip they all basically overclock the same.

Status: Amazon took my money so I hope the card arrives soon

Is 550W power supply good enough to run a Gigabyte Xtreme Gaming 1080 ? Running a
i7-5930k cpu if that helps.

edit: All good found the answer on their site.

Ok got fed up with reseller not putting up solid dates for the Asus Strix 1080, cancelled my preorder and found a Palit Gamerock Premium that should arrive next Tuesday.
Hope this card is solid and it should go nicely with the H442 white case but it's the first time I buy from Palit and literally dunno a thing about them except they RMA in HK... Fingers crossed.

The Founder's Edition cards aren't terrible, they're just overpriced. For similar cost you can get an AIB card with a nice multi-fan custom cooler instead. If the FE is the only one available for a reasonable price in your country for whatever reason, then it's not a bad purchase.

Can anyone clarify the difference to me between the MSI Armor and the MSI Gaming X? I'm planning to do a small (+150 Core, +350 Memory) overclock, will there be any difference between the two with that?

The Armor version costs £60 less and I'm able to get it ASAP on Overclockers so if there's little tangible difference (I don't care about looks, I own Noctua after all) then I'll get the Armor version for sure.

You should probably just go for it, one of the main differences is that the Armor doesn't use the Twin Frozr cooling, not sure how effective the Armor cooling is, but I bet it's better than founders. OC wise they have as much chance in regards to a good/bad OC as each other.

Thanks, as long as it's quiet and doesn't reach 80+c temperatures I'm fine with it. Though right now I'm still debating as to whether I should get a 1080 at all. A 980 ti is £400 (with a new mouse and mousepad included, both of which I need) and seems like it could be a good stop-gap solution until the 1080 ti comes out which I will have been able to save up for by then. I've got a £1100 budget but frankly I don't want to blow it all at once.

Ti's are definitely a good deal for sure, guess it all comes down to what you wanna use it for... I upgraded from a 980ti because I play at 4K and have a Vive, both of which hold decent improvements for me, but if you game at 1080p and not interested in VR then go for the 980ti, I get the feeling the eventual 1080ti will be really expensive, and could well go for around £1000 judging by how things are going with the 1080's.

I'm going to be using it for 3440x1440p games. From what I've seen the 980 ti gets the same level of performance at that res that my current 970 does at 1080p, which whilst isn't an amazing jump is still pretty good. I've finished games like TW3 and from what I've seen games such as RotTR and GTAV perform pretty well. The 1080 ti will be for when games like BF1 start coming out that really test hardware.

EDIT: As for the 1080 ti price, by the time it's out I should be able to sella 980 ti for £200 which will make it £800 which is a fine price for me.

Sounds like the 980ti is the way to go for you then, especially within the timeframe you're talking about, upgrading to a 1080ti. Will be a very nice performance upgrade for sure.

Yeah, I realized that whilst a 1080 will be great for the short-term all I'm going to have to do is forego AA (which at 1440p really isn't necessary) and really fancy effects to get that constant 60fps I want. I look at benchmarks for stuff like The Witcher 3 even though I've completed that game and won't want to replay it for years. That and there just aren't any games coming out outside BF1 and maybe Deus Ex that would really push a 980 ti to make 60fps impossible.

It's just not worth the short-term hassle. If the 1080 ti is out by Christmas I'll get it then, if not I'll just save up Christmas money to get it.

Should be getting both by the end of this week if I order tomorrow. Really cannot wait. The jump from my 24 inch 1080p to a 34 inch 1440p ultrawide is going to be massive.

Wanted to upgrade to a 1440p monitor but holy crap why are they all so expensive?

I'd probably be better off buying a 40" 4k tv and playing on that

What are you looking for in the monitor? I'm assuming IPS, 1440p/144hz Gsync. But it would help to know what you're looking for. Remember Gsync adds about $200+ on average to a monitor, which is why I'm constantly pushing for adoption of adaptive sync as an alternative. I really do hope that some day consoles and TV manufacturers implement the scaler as a standard (It already is in Display Port, and soon HDMI, the cost is so minimal it makes it just makes sense to me.)

23" IPS 1440p 144hz, was expecting to find one around £200 as 1440p is pretty common these days but I guess not

1440p is pretty common these days but 144Hz really bumps up the price quite a bit. Not to mention, a lot of these monitors support either G-sync or FreeSync which both add to the price (mostly just the G-sync though). Still I think price is mostly due to 1440p 144Hz being a premium product aimed at enthusiasts. It will drop when 4K gets 144Hz.

I'm really impressed with my G1, the card runs so much cooler and quieter than my G1 980ti. The performance increase at 3440x1440 is just what I needed not to have drops to high 40s.

Overall I'm really impressed with this card.

Apart from that god awful RGB cycle

Finally got off my arse and updated the BIOS for my Asus Maximus VIII Ranger motherboard. With the BIOS out of the box (which I bought in November last year) it didn't like me using my iGPU in my Skylake; the BIOS was squished into the top half of the screen making overclocking a right pain in the arse.

Now I've updated it and it's displaying the BIOS full screen and have overclocked my 6700K from 4.0GHz to 4.6GHz stable and the temperature is at 73 degrees maximum under full load.

All I need now is a 1080 and my PC is going to be a veritable BEAST :oD

And after I get that 1080 I'm going to be getting a Rift in November.

It's times like this that I'm really happy to be alive and living in the 21st Century!!!
