Why isn't the world encouraging people to get smarter?

Just a thought that struck me... Considering how far humans have come due to really smart people, we are still at the point where it's not important for the population to be smart, in fact it's discouraged, because government seems to like a degree of stupidity to manage the population.

Let's say, if you have some ties to religious people, then it is more likely they will discourage you from learning too much science so you will still believe in a higher being.

And the thing is, humans are past the point of "Survival of the Fittest", so even though you still believe the world is flat, you still get to enjoy the inventions of genius people like airplanes, smartphones, the internet. You can still survive in the world as there are many people who believe in stupid things as well.
Considering the technology everyone uses, everyone should be past the point of believing the earth is flat, but yet we still have them.

Finally, I feel that there's few governments actually treat intelligence as an important part of nation-building. First, we still got countries like North Korea, and countries ruled by corrupt governments, who will absolutely not invest in any education for their nation, but they still survive because they can just buy the inventions of smarter countries. These countries will not be eradicated even though their people are not educated.
So obviously, with no consequences, the ruling government has no urge to educate their populace.
And even in first world countries like the US, building schools are obviously placed on the backburner as priorities are placed on things that can make money quickly.

I feel that humanity could advance and the world could be a better place if everyone as a whole becomes more educated. :(

So do you agree, or do you have a counter argument?

Compared to any other time in history, this is the most educated the population has ever been, so I don't really agree with your thesis there.

In this day and age ignorance is a choice.

Providing you have access to the internet you can learn anything you want for only the cost of accessing the internet.

I think the problem we have now is that the internet has also given stupid and manipulative people a voice which has enabled them to influence others when that wouldn't have been possible once upon a time.

The internet and our always-connected modern lifestyles just made it easier to see all the dummies. But they've always been there

Huh, the education problem in regards to the money spent by the government will never change, that is one fixed thing that we got to deal with.
Still, even with the internet ignorant people can thrive and do dumb things, not everyone is aware of the real problems of the world and this is in fact because they dont care to find out how to fix them...maybe education in regards to critical thinking of media and analysis is necessary to be teached at schools. The media is still very influential for them, check how terrorism makes the headlines and people that dont care to look further into the problem turn to xenophofia.

That can also be a problem though, the fact that the internet is open and free can lead to people only seeing what they want to see (searching for things that already support their views, echo chambers). It's not like school where you are told things you didn't know you needed to learn.

Learning things takes time and effort. A big part of the media we consume seems to be based on the idea of instant gratification. Luckily entrepreneurship and self-education also seems to be on the rise even if it doesn't seem as talked about in the media.

I have done no research and have no figures though.

Wtf is that with North Korea/dictatorships and not investing in education?

You seem to confuse an educated population with a politically active/rebellious population. Educated people in general do jack shit just like those you'd call 'dumb'. Maybe they even do less because educated people benefit from the status quo most of the time.

Good to know, I could've sworn it was going the other way

Detailed, accurate information is usually boring and hard to get through while vapid soundbites and people saying dumb things gets retweeted and reblogged furiously. There is light being shone on things for being terrible or stupid more than at any point in history and news tidbits can circulate faster than ever, so it can seem like everything is falling apart, everybody is getting blown up, shot, stabbed, raped, and everybody is an ignorant moron if you're basing your worldview on a kind of vague impression you get from news stories and what's currently trending.

Intelligence comes in all forms so you don't have to be a geek working for Google to be intelligent. In fact I think Kim Kardashian is very intelligent.

Based on what is going on in America it is a dedicated effort from religious groups to protect their organisations in the face of the internet and the global spread of information.

Hopefully it is the final death throes.

Outside of that, people are smarter than ever enabled by technology. When my five year old can put powerpoint presentations together you know things are moving in the right direction.

It's about just culturing inquisitiveness.
And that has to start young.

There are many very smart people who don't know anything else just their respective field.

It doesn't require a degree either.

The way she handles attention and properties with her name is really, really smart haha.
But yeah there is a concept of multiple intelligences.

What I was trying to say is that intelligence doesn't seem to be a factor for survival, because the dumb can just rely on the smarter ones, whether they like it or not.
Which I feel it should not be, and rather governments should be like, "be smarter or we die".
(Yeah, maybe it's terrible for me to say people should die because of their governments, but I'm looking from a broad view.)

Curious to know your education level.

Bachelor, in programming, not the top of the class. I know what I'm implying is that if I get left at the bottom of the curve, I should perish as a result of "Survival for the fittest". And I might be at the bottom someday.
But I'm not talking about that, I just find it strange that intelligence nowadays hardly plays a factor to survival.

Someone has to do the manual work at the bottom, everyone doesn't need to have a PHD...that is a waste of human resources....

"The world" now is smarter than at any point in history. More people are going to school/have access to education and informal education has become more available and democratized.

Just a tip:

Evolution is descent through modification, not survival of the fittest.

That's an old term.

Capitalism is based off sheer unadulterated ignorance. Not dumbness, but lack of information.

Case in point: the moron buying an LG 42'' panel with an internal resolution of 1024x768
(true story)
, or the person buying a prebuilt with a hd 5670 and wondering why games don't run.

And, if everybody got smarter with proper education, there would be way more competition (as if it's not already bad as it is) and wages would get even lower and unfitting of said effort to get smarter.

keeping people uneducated is a measure of control

Wait you're saying countries like the US are purposefully making sure people don't get too smart so they can keep manipulating them? Like some country-wide conspiracy?

People are smarter now than they have ever been in the past. The main difference now is that you have easier access to a huge number of smart people, and consequently an even larger pool of people you perceive as dumb. But even people you'd consider dumb after reading what they wrote on the internet, are probably a lot smarter than you'd expect if you ever had a normal conversation with them. Believing in things that aren't true, or holding harmful opinions is not the same as being dumb.

And with every developed nation generally pushing their citizens towards higher education, you can't really support the claim that "the world" isn't encouraging people to get smarter.

While literacy is at an all time high that doesn't necessarily mean people are more educated by virtue of the focus of education not necessarily being in things that make people more prepared to deal with adult life and being focused on driving them into jobs.

I don't know about that kind of extend but there is no denying that the importance and or the validity of certain topics in science does get downplayed/ignored/misrepresented and not by fringe groups.
So at least to some extend certain knowledge is being obfuscated or kept from a portion of the public.

What would you call your parents or your teachers telling you to pay attention in class? Is that not the world encouraging people to get smarter?

The education system can't go from being shit to perfect in a generation, these things take time. Your kids will be a lot smarter than you, just have a little patience.

In most societies intelligent educated people have less children than stupid people. Due to this imbalance the world is literally selecting for (i.e. breeding) stupidity.
