So, an actual hybrid?

This is a bit disappointing. This is the 'big new idea' they had been touting for ages? It's an obvious idea floated (and tried) before. I'm sure Nintendo will make a more concerted go of it than others have in the past, but that doesn't make it a revolutionary concept.

Actually, unless there's more to the story it feels like a concession that they can't compete with a discrete home unit. Quite, quite disappointing.

What are the arguments FOR moving your business pretty much 100% into a market that has nearly evaporated by mobile (handheld gaming)? If this information is correct, this is a handheld first, and console second. Why move into that market now?

Maybe you missed the last 5 years but the console market has left Nintendo behind, they have lost that battle to PlayStation and it's not worth risking the company's future trying to change it. Nintendo focusing on handhelds is logical, just look at how badly consoles are doing in Japan.

Hmm, could a docking station be released that could add to the consoles power? It wouldn't be required, and would not segment their market.

Makes sense. Consoles are dead in Japan. Handhelds dead in West. This way they maximize their software sales having all their heavy hitters on one platform.

You guys are all talking about various things, and the only thing i can think about is MONSTER HUNTER ON MY BIG SCREEN.

Day one.

Spirit brother!

Best thing is even if the quip about no BC is true (refuse to believe, no reason there can't be 3DS BC), Capcom has nowhere else to put Monster Hunter; Vita is dead, 3DS is getting tapped out, and mobile does not have the controls needed to keep up with this game decently.

MONSTER HUNTER ON MY BIG SCREEN!

What would be the difference if the way you play is the same ? Assuming the game look solid on a TV.

1. I'd have to pay for something that I don't need (mobility) and it'd lead automatically to:
2. This thing is super weak again. Maybe not for a HH since Nintendo is practically the only big company releasing those now anyways and will have the hardware lead there, but it really disappoints as a home console releasing in 2017.

Btw. I still wouldn't call this a hybrid if that's really just a HH that can display the content on a TV. It's just an highly advanced PSP feature.
I'd have called it a hybrid if it had advanced functionality/hardware power when putting it in the docking station or something. The only difference for now seems to be that you can use several controllers with it.

Don't flame me if there is more to it, can't read everything for now (I'm at work), so if there's something I've missed feel free to correct me.

This does sound pretty cool, but really not something that will appeal to me and my needs.

Hope they'll find an audience for it!

So this is handheld successor seems to me. Will there be a dedicated home console or has nintendo completely abandoned that space?

Given the success of the ps4, that's surprising. I guess they must have decided they can't compete in that space, at least right now. One failure (wii u) after a massive success (wii) seems like they are pulling out a bit too quickly. Maybe they are just conceding that Sony won the generation, and they will wait until scorpio is close to release to announce a true next gen console. Scorpio is basically a next gen system whereas neo is not. Seems to me the tv dock on this portable does mean they are our of the home console space for at least the foreseeable future. They aren't going to get very many 3rd party ports with a tegra chipset. This is a handheld, targeting mainly Japanese and mobile development, not aaa home console releases. Crazy they are basically abandoning the space. I'm happy with a new nintendo handheld though. 3ds is dated as hell.

No AV out port. Probably connects wit the TV wirelessly, reverse of Wii U.

So, a PSP with 2 controllers and high display latency?

As someone that likes 2D fighters and shmups, this doesn't sound good. I can't imagine anyone using the NX for fighters if it's a wireless display connection.

Can a Tegra X1 in principle run PS4/XBO games with downgraded graphics? I reckon that CPU and memory would be the biggest obstacle. How do the A57/A53 cores compare to the AMD Jaguar cores?

Glad they're not directly competing against PS4/Xbone as that's not their strength. Sounds like it could be a decent second console for me.

I think I have to eat crow for something I said once before
somewhere in my post history about ARM being silly
.

Nintendo went full on silly mode here.

I like the handheld with a dock idea, basically what I hoped for. Having all their games on a single system is a smart move. The Wii U has an alright lineup, the 3DS has a pretty good lineup, now combine them and you have a great lineup. It's basic math. I don't like the detachable controller sides, seems like an unnecessary point of failure. Just put a classic controller in the box with it.

The nonbelievers who kept saying "IT'S NOT GONNA BE A HYBRID!" .. Where are you now?
QbadP.png

Considering that the VERY first thing we learned about it suggested pretty heavily that it was not going to be a hybrid, and for the longest time it was the only piece of information we know about it, its not at all a surprise that no would think it was an hybrid.

Sound pretty great to me.

A shared library could be huge. My biggest hope for the NX was for all those amazing franchises to get a home console version.

Imagine SMT V, next MonHun, Next Dragon Quest will all be made with a home console in mind (DQ11 already was but hey)

Indeed. the problem with not having reliable 3rd party support has never been that Nintendo isn't able to support their system.
It's been that they needed to support 2 separate systems which always went back and forth between one or the other getting the best stuff. Ebb and flow.
With this kinda system this problem is solved as they can have all their internal team developing for one single system which should boost software output immensely.

I like this for numerous reasons.

1) Eliminates software drought. Nintendo can't support two libraries.
2) System will get easy ports from PS4/XB1
3) Two detachable controllers gives plenty of possibilities for control schemes.

If this thing is really only rocking a Tegra X1 and not some proprietary tegra chip built off the pascal architecture there is no way in hell this thing can run ports of PS4/XB1 games. The chip just isn't capable of that sort of processing power.

Always wanted a cartridge comeback so I am pleased in that respect but as for everything else there, pretty unimpressed, disappointed. I wasn't expecting a Neo/Scorpio box by any means but this sounds underwhelming to me.

Of course, we have not seen anything of it but if this was meant to gather excitement you can count me out for today.

I like the idea of a hybrid, especially for Nintendo. This does sound mighty appealing to me. The Tegra X1 has been in the market for more than year, and the shield TV is being sold at $200, so hopefully that means a $250
price. The bad news, it's that it isn't that much of an improvement over the WiiU.

Shall we wait until the actual reveal to start complaining about specifics such as design, power, price etc? Because right now nobody knows what it actually looks like and what's under the hood.
Speculation thread, people gonna speculate. Dont see the issue.

I don't understand how this system solves Nintendo's third party software problem. I hope the novelty works.

If Nintendo can show them it's a popular system with moving tons of units, it'll be easier for them to commit compared to the Wii U imho.

Really really awesome news if true, also I really don't see the problem with performance if the Handheld has 2 modes.

Handheld mode which is for battery life.

Console mode for maximum performance and graphics.

If the stand is used to boost performance then that is all good I say

Fucking lol at all the posters I would regularly see that were 100% certain it wouldn't be a hybrid

Yep! Crow is going to be an endangered species after this. :)

I told them time and time again that "but Iwata said..." Is not a valid argument.

So if his is powered by Tegra, does it still use an AMD chip? Because if not then that has implications on the interpretation of AMD's roadmap.

To sit along side my ps4, I was definitely looking for Nintendo to something radically different, this fits the bill.

Interesting to see if it pans out like rumors suggest.

If this is true, I am overjoyed. I love my Vita, and I was afraid I'd get no new real portable. This is as close as possible for me :)

I have absolutely no interest in Nintendo consoles but a handheld that's powerful? I will happily take that, not had a handheld for so long so would really like to see what this thing can do, I ain't home enough these days to enjoy console gaming anymore. Mobile gaming is dogshit, hasn't itched the craving for a good handheld for a long time which is why I've just ignored it.

Edit - My only thought is, I hope the battery life is decent because my iPhone shits out in a day.

This isn't very revolutionary, like I don't see how this will really turn their fortunes around. I'll wait until the official unveiling, but I'm not enthused.

I don't understand how this system solves Nintendo's third party software problem. I hope the novelty works.

it solves their first party software problem making their third party software problem less of an issue. doubly so because all the third party games that are typically exclusive to their handheld hardware will be playable on your TV as well.

What?

Like a Transformer Console? I had those toys in the 80's.

Is there a premium version that turns into a decent console?
/s

Really though, sounds like the stuff that breaks after a few months.

I can´t remember if Nintendo has ever built a hardware that has broken easily in their history. Their hardware has always been solid as it should be. (PAL-Territory here)

At news, nice concept. Bring it on!

Can't get over the love for this. This is a terrible idea. Terrible. No one in the real world wants some huge-arse mobile console. This is going to a disaster.

MARK. MY. WORDS.

Zero shits given. I just want it to be cheap enough and get enough support to justify it being a secondary console. Don't care about the handheld portion aside from it expanding the library.
