Eurogamer: NX = portable w/ carts, detachable controllers, Tegra, TV Out, no BC, Sept

It's an interesting concept and I'm fascinated to see more. That said, it doesn't really appeal to me. I'd leave it stationary 99.9% of the time, and there are machines that do that better.

I wonder if they are bumping the battery as we speak since pokemon go is a battery killer, 3DS would die in 30mins if it could play Pokemon GO
I mean they are going to need their own versions

Nintendo NX: We're going to try and make what the Wii U should have been back in 2012 in 2016.

Who's to say there isn't an extra GPU in the dock when you're playing at home?

I guess it'd be possible ala Surface Book, where the handheld would come with Tegra and the optional dock would be with a more powerful Nvidia's dedicated GPU. The dock could make it not dissimilar to the Wii U today except that code would need to be compiled for handheld and handheld+dock. Like the Book, this'd also opens up potential upgradable paths.

On reason I doubt that this is the case it is that the tech would be on the dear side for both the handheld and dock which could put folks off.

One thing is for sure, even though it's incredibly obvious, Nintendo is going with awesome portable chip technology compared to the 3DS which was rumored to use one of the early Tegra SoCs,
but ultimately ended up using DMP (Digital Media Professional) PICA 200 GPU.

NX will be an absolutely MASSIVE upgrade for Nintendo handheld gaming over 3DS and New 3DS,
I hope to God stereoscopic 3D is still there. Would look glorious on a higher resolution screen, backed up by Tegra

The console / HDTV side of things is much more murky however.

So, an actual hybrid?

This is a bit disappointing. This is the 'big new idea' they had been touting for ages? It's an obvious idea floated (and tried) before. I'm sure Nintendo will make a more concerted go of it than others have in the past, but that doesn't make it a revolutionary concept.

Actually, unless there's more to the story it feels like a concession that they can't compete with a discrete home unit. Quite, quite disappointing.

I guess it's new for Nintendo? I also don't see how this will bring in the casuals as Ubisoft mentioned, or even less how it brings third party games to Nintendo.

Hmm, could a docking station be released that could add to the consoles power? It wouldn't be required, and would not segment their market.

Nintendo has the patent for a 'Supplemental Computing Device', which entails an device providing extra resources to a gaming system.

Easy ports on much weaker hardware? What? You will get no ports.
What is this 'much weaker' hw you're talking about?

Resolution scales, as proven by ps4/xbone multiplats. CPU-wise an X1 will likely beat both xbone and ps4, as long as NX does not have half its cores 'reserved'.

There go my hopes for $199. Actually I guess even a high powered handheld would still end up being decently cheap relative to a console.

Being able to play handheld games on a TV with a controller is more than worth it however. Really miss that feature from back in the pre-Wii days.

I wonder how many TF NX has.

I think the concept is interesting, but I am not a fan of mobile gaming. I have a 3DS and two Vita, but I only play with them at home lying on the couch, or in my bed. So the mobile component of NX is no use for me. I rather play the games on a big screen with 7.1 surround sound.

Okay, this is certainly getting interesting. "We're not making a hybrid. We're not making a hybrid.... SURPRISE WE'RE MAKING A HYBRID"

I will post more thoughts about it later but the whole thing depends on how greedy Nintendo gets on it. NVidia Shield tablet is 900 PLN (<250$), if they manage to get the controllers in by cutting on the screen size and keep within that price range while slightly refreshing the chips it could be a very attractive proposition.

Is there a genuine good reason for going back to cartridges besides faster/no loading? Aren't they more expensive to produce and less reliable than discs?!

More expensive, yes. Less reliable, hell no.

I will be honest, I expected a console priority with handheld feature but a handheld priority with console feature is much better for me and a more justifiable purchase considering I will likely stick with Sony or Microsoft for console.

I am excited to get my hands on this, especially with the full force of Nintendo first party behind it. New full scale Zelda and new full scale Mario on the go? Wow!

A smart move, they focus on the only market they are still relevant in - the portable market.
Right. And console functionality is an option.

Just Nintendo playing to their strengths.

Hopefully people will be willing to accept the power compromise of it means basically getting the new equivalent of Wii U and 3DS libraries both on one system.

I imagine the majority of Nintendo's planned audience will not care about power. They'll enjoy the convenience of the system and all the games that come with it.

I don't understand how this system solves Nintendo's third party software problem. I hope the novelty works.

Look up any list of best 3DS games. Many, MANY of them are third party.

If most of those companies move on to the NX, you'll now also be able to enjoy their games without having to play them on a tiny screen. Bravely Default, Ace Attorney, Monster Hunter, all of those now on your TV.

It's basically a trojan horse way for them to get their handheld partners to also make games for their console. By turning the console into the handheld.

I am very happy with this news (if true of course)! This is a dream come true for fans of Nintendo software. All studio's focusing on one machine :)

Question: The screen is more than likely not going to be 1080p resolution, so how would that work when connecting it to the T.V.? Would it just stretch the image?

But...I've already got a device for gaming on the go (mobile). A device that does like 500 other tasks to boot.

Why would I want to carry around another piece of hardware?

To think of all Nintendo studios and partners developing for one single hardware is quite an exciting prospect. Suddenly third party games aren't so important anymore (though they are still important of course).

As someone who really enjoyed Nintendo's handhelds and consoles for all his life...well, fuck. That really bums me out. I enjoyed having two separate libraries to curate.

No more two separate libraries was one of the things pretty much everyone was sure about.

So this is pretty much a PSP Go then?

I'm curious how they will solve the battery life issue. Going with cat ridges will help, but they better offer large internal storage for digital downloads

So this is what I have wanted out of a handheld forever. Something I can hook into my TV rather than sit and look at uncomfortably in a world with cell phones that are so much smaller and lighter than any of Nintendo and Sony's offerings obviously because of buttons and seconds screens but still.. I don't commute and only ended up playing "portable" games from the same chair I do my TV only worse due to the hardware. Neck strain be gone and still be able to enjoy the games available for the system comfortably. The form factor and ergonomics of portable devices usually sucked too (hello claws, bad nubs and circle pad pros) so detachable controller is ace. Hopefully I can use my Classic controller. Sounds perfect to me as long as the price is right.

As someone who doesn't play handheld gaming, all I care about it how it works as a home console.

I really hope the home console aspect isn't compromised by this design, if true.

Sounds like the perfect Monster Hunter machine. Which means Capcom will go 'DURRRRRRRRRRRRRP' and start making MH for something else.

Didnt know WiiU was a Nintendo portable.

Also this will be the only Nintendo system to buy this gen. So no more splitting userbases between handheld/console. Im a Nintendo fan at all so obv. im biased but i cant see the system failing in Japan...unless its a complete mess.

If this thing is expensive at launch like 3ds was their is a very high chance.

And What about Sonic 2017?

I believe NX will come with Tegra X2 :

"Assuming that X2 offers a generational leap over X1 and uses the same Pascal architecture found in its new GPU line, we are potentially looking at power more in line with the current-gen consoles"

Interesting for sure, though I'd need to see impressions on it's design and how it feels to hold. I use my handhelds the most lately so if it's a really nice handheld then I could be okay with this.

I doubt they'll sacrifice processing power in order to travel that road again.

Okay...this has me interested. I wasn't really interested in another PS4 equivalent, since I have that. Just make it reasonably powerful and I am interested.

Sounds very interesting if executed well. 3rd party support will probably suffer once more if it is so underpowered, but it can't really match PS4 in a portable form.

But, for Nintendo gamers it's a great option and gives a lot of flexibility, and of course the 1st party software lineup will be much better if they have to focus on one device.
Also, they can release improved models in the future, since the architecture will probably be more common and not something like the WiiU.

To people complaining about the power of the console, read this: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/d...-mobile-games-machine-powered-by-nvidia-tegra

It's a companion article and discusses the GPU. It actually sounds like a monster portable that will be better than WiiU, though maybe not XBO power. That's if it's not some special custom version of Tegra X2. It sounds pretty damn awesome honestly.

Although being Nvidia, I'm now concerned about Vulkan compatibility. Nvidia's chips aren't as good as AMD at Vulkan. Though we are talking about Maxwell and Pascal. Not sure about Tegra.

Maybe? Absolutely not. You know what the problem with that is? THAT HARDWARE IS 3 YEARS OLD AND FROM LAUNCH COULDN'T SCRATCH THE SURFACE OF WHAT GAMES COULD DO.

I really appreciate that nintendo is doing it's own thing as it always has.

I want this to be successful as I think it will be a perfect compliment to my pc.
