Not sure how this will do with consumers, but even if it just consolidated their hardcore handheld and console fans and allowed Nintendo to cut back on game development by having one platform instead of two I think it's a smart idea on their part, certainly smarter than just releasing another set of DS/Wii successors or trying to go toe to toe with Sony and MS, which would have been a fool's errand.

i'm pretty sure this is the same thing

I can't imagine there are many nintendo fans out there that bought a Wii U but not a 3DS.

3ds' best holiday was 2012 or 2013, I believe. it has been downhill since. peaking in the second year is not a good look. mobile is stealing the lunch money of traditional handhelds worldwide.

I doubt this will even sell half the units 3DS sold.

I like the concept. I don't need cutting-edge power in my Nintendo platforms,* but I do need a steady supply of games. With no way of guaranteeing third-party support, this was the best way to increase software output.

The big question for me is going to be controller design. I love Nintendo's console controllers, but their handheld inputs have not always impressed me. A circle pad would kill my hype cold.

*I mean, I would take it, but as I'm skeptical even a PS4-powered NX would get all the multiplats and PC ports, I am always going to need another gaming device.

Now if the controls on the sides come off, does that mean we have to take those off to dock it? Like into a kind of MS Surface docking station.

Or can we leave those on it and dock it some other way, say through some port on the bottom in a kind of cradle stand instead of locking it into a frame like the Surface?

The former would be more secure and stable, but the latter would be far better for just grabbing and going or vice versa.

While not a Herculean task, it will get tiresome having to attach and detach the controllers and put it in and take it out of the dock constantly.

This is super cool.

Not even being smug of sarcastic. I love the idea of taking the NX outside to work/school, and bringing it home for couch gaming.

Just imagine it; you have to stop playing Zelda or whatever because you have work in 6 hours. But you're at an amazing point, and the thought of not playing Zelda or whatever for 10+ hours bums you out. But now, all you have to do is bring it with you to work and play on the bus or something.

Incredible.

Mockup creators: I know eurogamer said detachable controllers (plural) but I'm not sure about this, so why not keeping the clamshell design where the full upper part is detachable?

And where goes the screen, what's the point anyway of detaching it from the rest?
Probably going to the dock station but why? Two screen gameplay? Having two batteries for better handheld autonomy (one in controller, one with the screen)?

Or maybe that's the computing parts + cart that goes with the screen to the dock.

Also, I had the impression that the Vita already kinda proved that the masses aren't really interested in traditional console experiences on a handheld. What looks to be an amazing idea on paper 'OMG Uncharted in the palm of my hands!' quickly wears out it's welcome in practice where people want games that tailor to the platform's strengths and are playable in short bursts.

Vita didnt fail because of its awesome hardware - no one gave a damn about the games.

NX will be the only system you will get your Nintendo games starting 2017 - also people dont realize it yet, but seeing games like Zelda BotW running on the handheld will will be quite impressive - especially if the tv hook up is seamless and idiot proof.

The thing about most external cooling solutions is that they're aftermarket products applied to something that isn't necessarily designed for external cooling. Having hardware specifically designed to integrate with an external cooling unit should be a more effective prospect.

(All this is in principle, of course. I've no idea if it's something Nintendo would pursue)

In order for external cooling to be effective it needs to have access to the handheld's internals. Since the handheld alone almost certainly won't require active cooling it seems counterproductive to design it with vents which would allow dust and debris to enter the casing.

I'm sure there are ways to get around this, such as a trap door mechanism for example, but I fear any such solution would compromise the robustnessdurability of the handheld, something Nintendo would want to avoid.

I need to know how are going to deal with storage on the handheld. 32gb games on a handheld is not going to be ok for digital distribution, how the fuck are you supposed to store that. SDs bigger than 128 are not exactly cheap, plus you wouldn't even be able to put 4 full sized games.
I'm guessing the docking station will have USB ports and external HDD support. It'll be your fridge for NX games.

I think it's proven to be the best solution for the market though, both from a sustainability and support perspective.

problem is, a full fat x86 PC is a wonderful thing to even have a gimped version of and is the most universally supported platform in the world.

a tegra based shield, less so. they've never ascended beyond niche appeal. you'd have thought nintendo would see warning signs there but apparently they just don't have enough nintendo games on them.

I can dig it.

As long as the controller is a normal damn controller with buttons. I dont want to be flapping my arms around wii style when riding a train and playing this thing.

I love the idea that you only have to buy games once to play on the go or at home. I like that Nintendo can focus their IPs to one system, so hopefully we get high quality games at a reasonable pace, because i honestly don't see 3rd parties jumping in on this unless it blows up like Wii. Even then, you're probably looking at licensed games and shovelware.

Tegra was probably mandatory if you didn't want to kill the battery, and honestly based on mobile games I've seen, I'm "ok" with the graphics capabilities, especially if they have the usual Nintendo QA.

So pretty much I'm only going to buy this to play Nintendo games, like the last 3 consoles from Nintendo. Sounds fun though!

Flash storage so cheap in 2016

This is true. 32GB micro sd cards are currently $9.99 each on Amazon, and that's the consumer price of an already assembled unit. Nintendo should be able to source these memory chips for a few bucks each, if even that.

btw: does this mean the Nintendo is Doomed crowd was ultimately correct? If this is a replacement of both the 3DS and Wii U, Nintendo has essentially exited the console space.

So does the docking station act as one of those supplemental computing power devices Nintendo has been patenting in order to give game a fair boost when played at home? I can't imagine the NX version of Zelda will look worse at home than the Wii U version...

Doesn't sound like something I am interested in but at least the reveal is soon.

Yeah, exactly. Nintendo circling the wagons and consolidating down to one platform will at least stop the bleeding. Between handheld and console customers they should be able to sell around what the 3DS sold, which they can sell to investors as good news as marketshare won't reduce further.

I assume software will all be $60 now, so they could see some stability in revenue, if not growth.

The thing that worries me about it is not the concept but hardware reliability: this a portable system with a variety of [essential pieces], all of which could break or get lost rather easily unless very well designed.

This sounds amazing. If true, I'll definitely make sure to get NX. The hybrid concept would theoretically lead to a plethora of first-party games.

If all of the indies and 3DS third party support carry over, this system will be fantastic! The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is already a fantastic way to start, so I have hope already.

This news is too good to be true!

I can see this being sold at $250, which would be ideal. Interesting concept. Only concern is the portability. I don't see myself bringing this on the go if it's any bigger than the 3DS.

Still thinking in the back of my mind that Nintendo will make a dedicated handheld.

I love Nintendo mobile exclusives like Rhythm Heaven, Phoenix Wright, "2D" Mario, Pokemon etc though i don't have a 3ds anymore cause it's too much having to carry that around too, especially when i already have my phone where there are plenty of great mobile games...i repeat i would rather Nintendo to just start making their software for smartphones, and perhaps releasing some dock controller for those too, than making another portable console(don't care about attach it on my TV, i've got PC and next gen console for that)...What could really make me consider it is a great, and i mean really great battery life, smartphones battery drains like crazy while gaming and even though i use a battery bank having something where i know i can play for like 6 hours straight without problems would be good

I was confused about the controllers at first, too, but I think they mean the two sides of the handheld combine to form one regular size controller.

If attached, maybe. But eurogamer mentioned them used for 2 player. That's so confusing. Why not just throw in a normal controller that stays with the dock?

What are the chances it's backwards compatible with 3DS?

My damn screen cracked, I want to play Mario Land 3D & Animal Crossing on my NX lol.

Nooooo Gaf says, It's not a hybrid.

Yet..

It's a Hybrid.

Anyway, hype is through the roof. But is it gonna have better hardware than Wii U? Zelda had a lot of popin on Wii U... So I am kinda skeptical of it on a handheld.

People have been saying it's a hybrid since discussion about the console began. I stopped going into NX threads because the circular and dominating discussion about it being a hybrid made reading speculation boring.

The best thing about this - if it's true - is that they're now developing for a single platform. That has me really excited

Will be interesting to see how more casual players react, especially when this comes out at 299. Imagining this somewhat hilarious image of the masses (in the west anyway) out in the wild with their NXs.
