I can't be the only one thinking Nintendo is delusional. If they're trying to capture the casual mobile market, this feels misguided. People play on their phones more than consoles because their phones fit in their pocket and they can play them whenever they have a spare moment. I love handheld gaming, but I don't drag my 3DS with me everywhere I go and pull it out while waiting for a movie to start. This feels like a gimmick without a real reason to exist, except to consolidate Nintendo's IPs into one place. And frankly, that's not a good enough reason to buy a console that cannot even remotely compete with what's out there now. A Tegra-based Ninty handheld sounds amazing, but I don't want to see that garbage on my TV.

But I'll gladly eat crow if I'm wrong. But given what we know now, I'm not convinced.
 
It's hard for me not to compare this to the Vita.

The Vita was what I thought was a perfect handheld format. Feels nice in the hand, two sticks, nice big screen, decent buttons, touch screen, etc. But I still don't carry mine around all that much.

Partly because it's sort of big and heavy, partially because of the battery life. I usually play it at home, or when traveling (it's great for a long flight, for example, especially if I have a power outlet at my seat).

So, anything bigger or more awkward, or with worse battery life (assumptions) is a non-starter for me.

That said, even the 3DS is too big/awkward in my opinion.
 
Surprised at the conservative reaction by much of GAF. Nintendo isn't that irrelevant. This idea looks like it surely can beat Wii U.

And smartphone and tablets to cover gaming on the go. Devices anyone already has.
 
So, it's a hybrid. :O Games that can be played on the go or on the TV. Sounds like we could have a much greater and more consistent output of software from Nintendo this time around. Throw in some Japanese third-party devs and a plethora of indie devs and this could be one hell of a device. Color me intrigued!

Now, Nintendo... SHOW THE DAMN THING!!!

Strong 1st party lineup might. I mean what else does Nintendo truly have except their 1st party games? Having all of Nintendo's 1st parties developing (well mobiles too but they're recruiting specific staff for that, outsourcing and it is lighter than their traditional games) is not something we have seen since 90s and SNES.
 
Hmmm... might there be the chance that the base unit could be an optional high powered machine.
I somehow doubt that this is all.

Personally, as a handheld this sounds awesome, but I'd like a dedicated home console as well, even if it merely acts as a base station... we'll see.

A dead carcass scraped up and bagged would be able to outsell the WiiU. Nintendo right now is irrelevant when it comes to stationary hardware.

Give me a mainline Pokemon game utilizing the NX power and then you got me.

Also just to simplify this, is it just like like a Wii U, but better graphics and being able to take it on the road?
 
It doesn't sound super powerful but it's getting the new Sonic and Zelda which means it must be pretty powerful, right? Like not Scorpio powerful but strong enough that it could handle your average 8th gen game.

Maybe it's just handheld bias, the NX sounds pretty cool though. I really hope it takes off.

I guess you could make the argument that for home-only gamers a system without things like a screen or a battery would either have had more performance for the same price or simply a smaller price tag.

Maybe Nintendo will follow up with a cheaper home-only variant of NX.

Even if the handheld segment is shrinking, there's still a maintained interest in Nintendo handhelds vs Nintendo consoles.

With the 3DS aging like it is, it would be stupid of Nintendo to let it try to hang on for another entire year or delay defending its handheld stake to push out another console in the segment where they've lost repeatedly.

When they said Spring release, I knew it'd be a handheld. 3DS released in Spring. Fall/Winter is usually when consoles come out.

Some still miss that aspect.
The 3DS has (despite selling less than the DS) sold over 60 million units worldwide.

Without Minecraft, Call of Duty, GTA, Assassin's Creed, Battlefield and so on.

But with different games, from many other third-parties.

Doesn't mean that is not needed, but is not a requirement to achieve the success they want or that others expect.
 
I'm a bit concerned with storage if this is true, since you can't really hook up a external HDD and 32GB carts makes it sounds like the games are not going to be friendly sized.

It sounds so abstract right now, so I don't have any feeling towards it until I see it

However if this game is getting the amount of JRPGs like it did on the 3ds I would buy it in a heartbeat
 
This thing is way underpowered compared to the Xbox one let alone the PS4. Hell, it's only slightly better than the wii-u. It seems that Nintendo doesn't want to learn anything from the wii-u. No third party will fuck you up and tegra chip from Nvidia is not enough to port any current gen titles. The Neo and Scorpio are going to be even more powerful.

If they are going to Solely rely on first party games, it should be around $200 no more.
 
Here we go!

Lots to digest, and I think Nintendo needs to come out and confirm soon especially if any of this is inaccurate. Then again, perhaps waiting for more games to be ready before official reveal?

Main thing I'm wondering about is price. Will it be priced more like a handheld, or console? Somewhere in between I assume?
 
guys, please wait for official announcement before you write it off. We have no idea what final version is going to look like. It might be better than some people would expect it to be.

I'm cautiously hopeful that it would be very good. Also shared library made me excited because they doesn't have to works on the games for both consoles anymore so it might increase the chance of us seeing old franchises' returns like F Zero, Murasama Castle, etc.

DS was holiday 2004, but you're right about the 3DS.

Yeah, spring is a better time for handhelds to launch compared to consoles.

Because this thing sounds pricey, and I'm not gonna buy a glorified handheld for $250-300. Don't like the idea of the controls being detachable, either. None of this is what I'd want from a handheld or a console.

Because disc-based medium is a terrible fit for a portable device. Going for flash-based media is the only choice for that form factor.

It's because people are already carrying something around with them at all times - their smartphone - and a lot of folks don't want to carry a separate thing around for games because, guess what, their smartphone is about a billion times more powerful than a 3DS.

The Vita's failure has got nothing to do with power. Its expensive, has got proprietary memory card and questionable game lineup.
 
Well then, if this is true, then Nintendo was bullshitting everyone about having a home console and a portable console.

That or they changed their plans radically within the last year to this hybrid approach.

Either way I'm in considering this will let me play TLoZ: BotW on the go.

True, but if you're looking for a Neo or a Scorpio experience, that's what you're going to have to buy. This was never going to compete on that scale.

If the dock has extra power, and this is using an X1 or X2, we'll be looking at better than Wii U results at home too.
 
No thanks Nintendo, cannot stand handheld gaming, in all forms. It being weak is a huge dissapointment but I guess it was expected. Still I had some hope it would be powerful.

Sorry this is the Wii U again. Nintendo fans will eat it up, but that's about it.
 
This may very well be a product. However, I believe this is just one of several products Nintendo is making.

If this is what the NX is why no announce it earlier? There's no way in heck Sony and Microsoft are going to rip off this concept. It's not really anything new. It's a high powered vita that can be plugged into your tv.
 
The funny thing is that the NES Classic Mini is probably going to have bigger controllers than the NX..

I know which one I'm going to buy. And it's not the NX.
