I think Nintendo's new system would need to either be powerful enough to allow for ports of third-party games or be so cheap that people would buy it as a second console. I cannot imagine that an expensive console would sell well if it does not play all the major games that most gamers want to play.

As a consequence, given that NX' design does not sound like it will be able to handle big third-party games, Nintendo really needs to make it cheap. $200 sounds like the maximum they could get away with. And even that would be more than many people are willing to spend on a secondary gaming system.

So I won't expect any expensive hardware. The screen and the quality of the materials will probably be in the budget range. I also cannot imagine that they'd have enough budget left for gimmicks like a second GPU in the base station, large amounts of memory, and so on.

absolutely this.

I would agree that this is not a good hardware choice if they're chasing high end PS4/XB1 games, but I'm not convinced of that premise.

This feels more like a device designed for a world where they see smartphones ruling, which would be true in the domestic market.

At this power profile Nintendo can improve on the 1080p games they are already making on WiiU (which play an drun beautifully by the way) while delivering a true upgrade to the portable landscape that I have been waiting for

But Im not going to oversell this until I see more. Overall it seems like a great idea to me

They were nevery going to be in in the first place. Very easy to be negative.

the era of the powerfull consoles is over

PS4 and XB1 + are the swan song

I believe in the future the next NX will allow to use our own PC cards thanks to Vulkan, how cool would that be?

How many people want to play console-tier games on the go really? Is there truly a mass market for that at this point with people attached to their phones?

My question about the carts is will they be like SD cards, similar to the DS/3DS line or will they be like mini Solid State Drives

(which are more like Carts of old).

I think it comes down to the games. People will buy it if they make compelling, innovative software again. Zelda BOTW is a great example of this. If it is just the typical Nintendo output, it will sell to Nintendo fans and will probably see a reduction in userbase compared to the 3DS.

I suppose that is why this is a smart idea. They are trying to simplify development as much as possible so Nintendo is in a better position to making industry leading games again.
But if it's barely as powerful as the wiiu why would someone interested in Zelda buy the NX instead of the cheaper WiiU?

No, a powerful handheld, with the biggest first-party game library in the history of Nintendo. Positive thinking is good.

What is the positive thinking if you wanted a good console (edit good as in close to a ps4 with hardware more recent) and a decent handheld?

So it's mostly great news for a nintendo handheld fans, but if you're a console only fan, reactions will vary greatly.

I belong to the latter. For me, on the one hand, we'll finally have "console" mainline Pokemon games. Cartridges will be neat. And having all Nintendo devs focused on one single system will be cool.

On the other, no BC, no BC, not even coming close to the xb1 in terms of power, and relative price for what I'd getting (the display/speakers etc on the handheld portion etc are features I wouldn't be using and are driving up the price while not benefiting me), this console is a non-starter for me. I was excited before to play zelda botw with upgraded graphics on the nx, but from the sounds of it, it may be around a xb1 vs ps4 type difference between the wii u and nx versions, which isn't that much at all.

So yeah if this all turns out to be true, I'm probably just gonna stick to the wii u version of zelda, and get this later when kart 9, smash 5, Super Mario Galaxy 3 and DKC NX are all out (if this thing will have 4 player support for kart 9 and smash 5 that is)

Stealth Edit: so that stuff about it not coming close to the xb1 is up in the air, and it may actually come close. Well most of this info is up in the air until officially confirmed by nintendo of course.

If it delivers console quality graphics when in handheld mode, I'm in day one. I know Vita is damn close when it comes to graphics but even Vita makes a few compromises, so if NX can actually do 1080p HD console quality graphics on the go, that is pretty damn awesome.

Playing games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild while being away from home would be great, then plugging it into a dock when you get home to carry on playing on a big TV, that's pretty cool stuff.

yeesh. Does not sound anything like I wanted from Nintendo. I will give them the chance, but this does not sound good at all.

No thanks Nintendo, cannot stand handheld gaming, in all forms. It being weak is a huge dissapointment but I guess it was expected. Still I held out some hope.

Sorry this is the Wii U again. Nintendo fans will eat it up, but that's about it.

I still think we are getting a traditional console aside from this product. But if this was the only product it will be much more successful that the wiiu. Remember this would be the handheld too. So it would likely sell at least 50 million units or more.

I mean, that is the point of Nintendo diversifying their IP, to generate revenue from other avenues such as theme parks and mobile games. If all of the people spending money on the Pokemon Go and other upcoming mobile titles like Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem mobile games don't buy into NX it doesn't matter because Nintendo still eating.

I think it's exactly this. I think instead of saying "how can we sell 100 million consoles again?" Or "how can we compete with Sony and MS again?", Nintendo had a reality check and said to themselves "Look, between handheld and console we feel we have a fairly solid and loyal base of 20-30 million users, let's try and serve them in the most fiscally efficient way and make the most money we can off of them, while at the same time diversifying into things like mobile, movies, theme parks, ect... as alternative revenue streams". I mean, in the same way Marvel/Disney don't expect the millions of people who watch MCU movies yearly to magically start buying comic books, I don't think Nintendo can expect Pokemon Go to convince casual non-gamers to buy dedicated gaming hardware, but guess what? Their money is just as green as yours.

Im getting MAJOR supplemental computing device vibes from the "docking device."

I.e this patent

main_scd7vsrw.png

1 - Upscales the handheld games for TV
2 - Provides the power capable for home console only games.

EDIT: sorry if already disscused

No BC? That's unfortunate - at least have the WiiU controller be capable playing the new games.

Can't wait for September.
Maybe late Sept for my Birthday. :)

About storage, my bet is that the dock will have a hard drive, and then the console itself a 64 GB or 128 GB flash memory (or microSD card). So for example you have 1 TB of HDD space on the dock and 128 GB on the console itself and when you have it docked you can move games between storages to decide which games you take on the go. And while docked you can play the games on the HDD. That would be pretty much the ideal option, no?

As expected it's going to be a hybrid and i'm totally ok with it, after all i was always saying(honestly i was expecting) that vita should have been something like PSTV+dekavita but better, but sony instead of improving the idea of the tv output present on the PSP completely removed it.

(dekavita is a handheld body with controls and screen for the PSTV, so you can use PSTV as a home console attached to a tv or as a handheld attached to dekavita)
That's the best solution

I am out because I have no interest in a Nintendo portable system. All I want is a strong Nintendo console, which this isn't.

i thought u plug into "brain" at homebase for more powerful options

kinda like what alienware is doing now with some of their laptops

obviously its pointless if they gimp the handheld console homebase GPU with mobile cpu

No, a powerful handheld, with the biggest first-party game library in the history of Nintendo. Positive thinking is good.

That's the way I'm trying to look at this. I was disappointed at first about Nintendo once again releasing an underpowered console, but maybe I should look at it as Nintendo recognizing that they can't (or don't want to) compete with Sony/MS for powerful consoles and instead want to focus on having a really powerful handheld instead while giving people the ability to play it on their TV if they want.

I'm not much into portable gaming but I'm looking forward to seeing what Nintendo does with the NX.

There is no way the dock will have extra power
.... At most it would just enable slightly higher clocks. The cooling would remain the same and there is no way to add any additional raw CPU or GPU power unless they thought up of a magically new complex architecture that enables simultaneous use of external GPU or CPU at high bandwidth in cooperation with the hand held components

This may very well be a product. However, I believe this is just one of several products Nintendo is making.

If this is what the NX is why no announce it earlier? There's no way in heck Sony and Microsoft are going to rip off this concept. It's not really anything new. It's a high powered vita that can be plugged into your tv.
This says it all. It has to be more than this if true.

So my assumption is that they're looking at what third parties can and will do with a next-gen portable and combining that with what they think a new console can do with those same third parties (i.e. nothing).

The biggest Vita games are not graphical powerhouses - by and large, the games that do really leverage the Vita hardware also didn't sell very well, which disincentivizes third parties from really trying too hard on graphically intense portable games. Moreover, Nintendo themselves probably can't keep burning the candle at both ends - they can't make PS4-style games (note: don't read this as an indication of graphical power for the NX) on a home console, Wii U-style games on a handheld, and hope both systems sell well. They don't have the time or money for that and it would eventually discourage the direction they want to go of lower budget, more experimental games with occasional AAA titles.

The problem this thing is meant to solve isn't the Wii U failing - not entirely, at least. It's Nintendo recognizing that another graphical bump for their handhelds will either entirely go to waste or it will force handheld development into the realm of console development, which is bad for them and bad for third parties that did well on 3DS.

I don't know if it will succeed, it's definitely going to be a hard sell and will certainly need to be priced appropriately, but I see the logic.

I dont see at all how this thing is gonna appeal to the console player audience. "nobody" who wants play an TV gonna drop 300 $ (or more, its nitnendo lol) on a Handheld to play Handheld games in upscaled mode at home. especially if you consider the price and position of the competitors at the release time

What is the positive thinking if you wanted a good console and a decent handheld?

If its X2, and it upclocks when docked, you more or less get both. Its really going to depend on how well this thing runs in two different profiles.

So no backwards compatibility, forced handheld integration, and gimped mobile hardware.

This is literally the worst case scenario for me. All of my hype for NX is gone. Half of the reason I wanted the NX was to play all of the Wii U games I missed, and the other half was to play Breath of the Wild at a higher res/better graphics. Neither of these things seem to be possible if these leaks are to be believed. Ugh.

This is EXACTLY what I wanted: one device that will let me play everything Nintendo releases. The fact that I'll be able to play Breath of the Wild from bed and Fire Emblem on the TV makes it even sweeter.

For those of you who know about hardware: what are the odds that this thing will have a) a nice screen, b) decent battery life, and c) a price point at $250 or lower? Is that too much to hope for?

Sounds pretty bad. Nintendo has lost their way if true. Too many gimmicks and not enough logical thinking. They don't have to be the most powerful, but they do have to come to the game with 'some' power.

No BC is unacceptable. On the bright side, this will save me some money.

Again, that doesn't suggest easy PS4/XB1 ports. An X2 isn't going to make games like Witcher 3 and Battlefield 1 'easy ports', which is what you suggested earlier. If XB1 can only run BF1 at 720p60fps, what would this run it at?

With a good, modified CPU, it could. Not necessarily on its own, no.

There's so many portions of this that make me nervous.

No backwards compatibility kinda stinks.

The handheld portion will likely be huge--at least the size of the 3DSXL if not bigger. That's a massive bummer if that's the case. I love to bring my 3DS around with me.

Will developers properly account for same-screen multiplayer in addition to ad-hoc multiplayer?

I have faith in Nintendo to pull this off but man oh man if I'm not on the edge of my seat in the process.

ARM when all your rivals and PC use x86?

Haha RIP Nintendo.

Unless you're going with the WiiU game development or just ending the console approach please just end your hardware department it's clear that you have no idea what you're doing in the West. The sales data clearly shows power and graphics sell in the West.

Now in Japan I can see this working somewhat.
