Did you guys arguing about the controllers forget about this picture?

well, I expect upgrading power will be done via SCD if you don't want to buy the latest revision. if I were Nintendo, I'd double that dock port to be a high speed bus for external devices allowing for docks that do offer additional ram and GPU power. in the SDK, I'd offer easy facilities for querying SCD parameters then promote doing dynamic scaling like Forza Horizon or Halo 5 on XBox one so that having your game suddenly perform and look better just works without having to do massive patch.

That would make too much sense for Nintendo.

I don't remeber evevn once when playing 3DS saying "I wish I could play this on a big TV screen" and I don't to play a console game on handheld.

But atleast we will get our console Pokemon game finally.

I don't think Third party approve of this but at this point they probably don't care.

What about Kid Icarus Uprising or Majora's Mask 3D ?

Not sure why people think if Nintendo made a traditional console that had all the same third party games as a PS4, all of a sudden they'd be back in. That's essentially what they already tried with the GameCube 15 years ago. Nintendo thinking outside the box is a benefit to us all. Especially when the rest of the console market is rotten and stale with incremental power upgrades as the biggest selling feature.

I'm excited to see this final product and their pitch for it.

Only if you want a handheld and a console.

Vastly overpriced for the mainstream handheld market...anything over $200 is.

..and those who just want a home console will feel like they are being ripped off having to pay $300 ..when a stripped down box minus the handheld should be $199 or less.

You alienate the handheld market.
You alienate the home console market.

...the only people interested are those who want both devices...which discounts a lot of consumers.

Maybe they split the pricing so it's $200 for the (portable)unit, $100 for the stand or something.

Edit: The controller has to connect to the other half to form one complete controller... nobody wants to control directions with separated buttons.

That's a good point. I doubt Nintendo would allow devs to just have one over the other as that would make half of the system's functionality worthless but at the same time some games might just not work on the go.

Maybe this will be the first Nintendo console without Just Dance. O:
Except Just Dance is already on mobile phones and was confirmed for NX this past E3.:p

Why would you even want 1080p on a small screen? Have you seen Vita's screen? It's 540p and no matter how hard you try, you won't notice any lack of quality (individual pixels, etc.). It's simply perfect.

Speak for yourself. I've been using smartphones for almost 10 years now.

I haven't had a Vita for years, but I sure had mine before they patched the aliasing out of the menu screen...

Could the 'docking station' have an additional GPU for when playing on the TV, like those Alienware external laptop GPU's?

Should have internal storage this way, too.

No I think that will make it too expensive.

Best case scenario is the system over clocks when it is docked as it doesn't have to worry about battery drainage.

Nintendo unifying console and handheld, MS unifying PC and console, Sony halfway exiting handheld, what a time to be alive.

Yep. I'll probably be PC and Nintendo only going forward. Though I'll probably keep my PS4 around for exclusives since it doesn't sell for enough to bother ditching it and Missing Horizon, TLOU2 etc.

I'll ditch my Wii U, 3DS and Vita before NX is out though.

It's not going to be 1080p on the handheld. At all. It'll be 480p to 540p for battery life.

Just because the handheld screen is low res doesn't mean a powered dock output would be that resolution and simply upscaled.
Although 540p does upscale nicely to TVs.

960 x 540 is pushing it even for a 5" display. If the NX has a 5.5" - 7" screen (which makes the most sense given the form factor and hybrid capabilities), there's no way it could be that low resolution. 1280 x 720 would be the minimum for a reasonable resolution at that size.

(For reference, the iPad mini at 7.9" is 2048 x 1536 and $100 8" Android tablets are 1920 x 1200.)

As long as I can play every game on my tv, I'll be happy. All nintendos developers supporting one platform and never having to play on a small screen again sounds like a great system to me.

I wonder how it will hold up battery-wise though as a portable?

It is interesting, however I am not sold on this myself, Nintendo are going to have to do a lot to win me back.

Literally my mindset right now.

Doesn't this go against everything Iwata said?

That's correct, he mentioned iOS and Android as examples of where Nintendo will go with it's future hardware.

If this ends up being true Kimishima must have said "to hell with it" and decided to do his own thing.

That's impossible, by the time Kimishima took over, NX was already too far into development to make any major changes. I call BS on this whole thing.

I hope there would be an option for a ''console'' version with a portable screen and all that for reduced cost for people who don't want to use the portable side of the device but I'm assuming that won't be an option. And hopefully the battery is better than the awful battery life of the new 3ds xl and the wii u gamepad.

The resolution on those devices are that high because they're optimized for reading. A gaming device doesn't need to be as high.

Oh man, this is going to be such a shit show.

This is Nintendo leaving the home console industry right here.

"Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot.

Yada yada yada

NIntendo, publicly apologize and cancel NX in its current form or you can kiss your business goodbye."

Did I get the gist of this thread?

I wonder if Nintendo will do revisions more often? Or even do like a 2DS and just offer a handheld only and console only version to entice gamers that want only one type of experience for a cheaper price.

Speak for yourself. I've been using smartphones for almost 10 years now.

You say "patched" yourself, which means that must have been a software issue. Nothing wrong with the screen. And let's not bring smartphones marketing nonsense into this.

Are you forced to buy the handheld/screen or can you just get the console portion?

That's all I want, seems dumb to make me pay in extra for something I'll never use.

But this is a shitty home console in the sense that it's underpowered compared to its competitors and the controllers will almost certainly be garbage ergonomics-wise.

So this feels like a half measure in both directions where you're left with the negatives of both sides.

a) The PS4 and XB1 simply aren't this machine's competitors,
b) Nintendo won't make garbage controllers, it's the one thing they always get right, and
c) If you wanted a home console first, you have negatives. As a handheld person, I feel like I get a double bonus - a more powerful console than I was expecting and the ability to hook it up to the TV. There are no negatives from my side whatsoever - I'm utterly delighted.

I don't mind handheld or hybrid or whatever.

The problem is Nvidia Tegra. Guess it's a Nintendo machine only again now with even less power and no BC too.

Is that what you're really happy with? A console that can't even access the graphical peaks of the medium-end card from 3 years ago on the X1 that is launching NEXT year? On a console?

When it's also a portable system? I'm ecstatic. This is the Vita 2 with a (most likely) better library of games and a built-in TV mode. I couldn't be more pleased.

I already feel like the PS4/XBO are overkill, unless you're into VR (I'm not) in which case they're not nearly powerful enough. Games like Xenoblade X & Splatoon are plenty good for my tech desires already and the idea of being able to play more impressive games than that on the go with non-touch based controls is really enticing.

Yeah, the NX isn't going to be enticing to people who don't want a portable system, but between the PS4, the XBO, and the PC scene, we really don't need another high-end home gaming platform.

Let's see how they designed the controllers. But my gut reaction is more like: I wished it was just a conventional handheld that you could just plug into your TV to use a Pro Controller with it.

Maybe you can. Nintendo likes their peripherals, so I do not see that changing.

Goddamnit.

They never learn.

Exactly. Watch how and if it happens, they fail to penetrate this console/handheld hybrid market due to the massive PS4 success and blame it on something totally unrelated to the fuvk ups.

Nintendo isnt Sony. They cant read a market like Sony does and find massive success in it. Plus they dont have a powerful, recognisable brand like PlayStation to extensively help them out with "new ideas". So, I have no idea why they think the way they think as if they were in an enviable position.

Instead of pulling a Samsung and improvise the PS4 formula, powerful console with competitive pricing and awesome third party support, they go the other way around with ideas that never take off (bar Wii) hoping it sticks and loose so much in the proces.

They are arrogant as fuck. Only Apple is capable of bringing new ideas and find massive sucess amd even then Apple does follow popular trends and still find massive sucesss...Nintendo?

They truly have no comprehension on how to read a market.

I wonder what resolution the portable screen will be.

I'm hoping for at least 720p.

But with Nintendo it probably won't even reach the Vita's resolution.

A really good classically designed console that pulls on your inner child strings. And it could have used cartridges. Microsoft not doing well is the perfect time for them to strike. ANd if Scorpio doesn't do well or their pc initiative then NINTEDNO could with tehright games, services, and momentum taken a lot of market from xbox.

But they dont want to compete with any of them so they are doing this handheld hybrid instead.

I mean I get it, and for people excited that's great, but not what I at least was hoping for, i had hoped they leaned some things from Wii/Wii u. But I guess not.
This IS learning things from Wii U (not Wii, thats absurd :P) just not the things you, or i or many imagined.

As explained in the op this is the opposite of Wii U in many ways.

How would the two controllers work if they're not motion control? They have to attach to each other or be designed differently so when you take them off they function like a standard controller.

I hope this has an abundance of social features. Sounds like a Wii U but with modules. I want to be wrong but I can't see this being much more successful than the Wii U. I'm hoping the base station has another dedicated GPU/CPU to push some power to appeal to Third Parties.
