Eurogamer: NX = portable w/ carts, detachable controllers, Tegra, TV Out, no BC, Sept

While I don't mind no BC, if they try and charge us *again* for VC games we've already bought twice or three times before, they can fuck right off.

That would also completely allow PS4 ports on the portable. There is no reason FFXV (for exemple) wouldn't run at 540p on such a portable system with some lower models. Why would SE do it ? I'm prettty sure a portable release of the game would double, maybe triple its sales in Japan.. Imagine a special edition NX customized with FFXV ?

Just an exemple of what a 500gflop portable console from Nintendo could bring.

Yeah no.

If each controller is independent and you only use one of them while playing... how tf would you play an action game like Bayonetta or a shooter with just a d-pad/XYAB set and a joystick?

The idea of the controllers being detachable seems fine to me if they can unite into a regular controller to play using a TV, but if they are independent we might end up with less buttons than a Wii controller.

What about the clickable scroll wheel thing

If no BC, not sure how I feel about my WiiU. I have to imagine they'll be rereleasing a bunch of games as NX versions? Super Smash, Mario Maker, etc.

I like my Wii U, 3DS and game library. They can coexist with the NX for me. Super Smash, Mario Maker & Splatoon will most likely come to NX as ports or in Splatoon's case maybe a full sequel. Buyer's remorse can always turn into regrets in selling off systems and libraries. I've spent more money buying back games I once owned than I made selling games in my collection.

So how is this meant to work when you're playing on the TV? Do we still have to use a controller with a screen in it or do we detach both of the side controller things from the screen and stick them together to make a controller? I hope controllers we buy for local multiplayer won't be too expensive.

I'm surprised they're going back to cartridges for a home console. Feels like the 90s again. Hopefully that doesn't mean the games are going to perform worse than if they were on a disc...

What if it doesnt ship with a screen?

The only reason home consoles don't is because they were invented to plug into a TV.

Nowadays we all carry little screens around.

...folks...this is the gimmick.....

You don't have to use it as a console.

Exactly. And people like me who will never buy another portable can use it as a console.

And people that like both can use it both ways.

Best of both worlds as long as it's priced right so that people not using it both ways don't feel it's too expensive due to features they don't use.

No dpad?

I would think it's the dpad that fits cloned instead of buttons.

Well, I think having the cross shape of the buttons acts as a "sort of" D-Pad, at least to have that sort of left/right parity. I went back and forth on it though, for sure!

It's super cute i like it but the screen won't be that ratio man :p

My skills suck to do otherwise, haha! I figure the top screen would be better since it's a better screen ratio, but I got lazy! (At work, LOL!!)

I might try to fix the ratio in a second though, unless someone beats me!

If this is legit, my ride on the NX hype elevator has reversed course and is heading toward the basement.

I was looking for a console, not a mobile device which connects to the TV. I just don't want to carry around any other device other than my phone. My iphone 6 plus is too big already.

This is great for a successor to the 3DS. A nice powerful handheld, but I'm underwhelmed at the idea of using this as a console.

I'm really hoping there's more to it than this because if it's just a handheld, it better be priced right. I'm not spending more than $200 for a dedicated gaming handheld.

Any variant of "Wii": 1 to 20 odds
Rebirth of "NES": 1 to 50 odds
The Nintendo Reacharound: 1 to 200 odds

Field: 3 to 1 odds

Give me $750 on Wii. $10 on NES. $250 on the field as a safety net.

Edit: Let me know when I can start parlaying bets with launch game announcements.

Is it something like these old 2 player game&watch handhelds???

See this carts ars SD Cards or 3DS carts. No recquired installations unlike discs which recquire them.

my face is in my hands

are people really that in the dark about discs and flash storage these days? jesus christ...

I can't imagine ANY flash storage medium performing worse than the drives in current-gen consoles do.

When was the last time you had to install data to your system's drive on a handheld?

This reminds me of the Microsoft Surface articles when it was first announced. "It's a half-assed tablet, AND a half-assed laptop!" Yeah, no.

People like convenience and multipurpose function. It's elegant, a one-stop shop for (most) things Nintendo, and should sell boatloads.

Very excited.

Carts have drastically better performance than discs. Only reason why everyone doesn't just use carts is expense (and way back when, storage space)

Unified development on one console will certainly help Nintendo's first party output. On the flipside, Nintendo going with hybrid would probably mean we could see those third party exclusive 3DS games going multi.

I hope Nintendo gets out ahead of this and clarifies some things (they won't :/ ) How portable is this thing? It sound like its going to be substantially bigger than a DS or a Vita. Not exactly something you pull out on the train for a quick game. Do I need a carrying case for this thing? Where does this leave the DS? is it replacing it entirely because this doesn't seem like its small enough to really be a true hand held.

Things to watch:
Nintendo Nvidia stock bump
The (declining?) sales of the new 3DS
The sad and ultimate death of the Vita. I think it really is done for good this time :'(

So a Nintendo handheld that you can plug into your TV? So fucking in. I've always loved their handheld ecosystem waaaaay more than I did their home consoles. As expected, it's not going to be as powerful as the Xbox One as a result, but those expecting parity with 3rd party ports were already living a daydream in the first place

Sounds freaking fantastic. Nintendo's teams only have to focus on a single platform now rather than a console and a handheld.

This is my exact line of thought.

No more division between console and portable. Just one unit that does it all.
Depending on the battery life and display resolution this could be really cool

I do wonder what market this appeals to though. Can anyone answer what niche this fills?

the ~20 million Nintendo faithful who will pay $60 a pop to play their latest 1st party titles on their $300 dollar handheld/tablet with controllers and TV port option. Hopefully they can keep them afloat alongside their mobile apps, theme parks, TV show licensing, Amiibos, etc

What if this is just one form factor? Who is to say the company doesn't also release a traditional console with the same architecture?

I like the suggestion someone had floated in another thread:

NEX: Nintendo Entertainment Experience.

Looks pretty cool but I'm personally not interested in a portable at all. I will reserve judgement until I actually see what the thing is.

It's cool that so many people seem excited though.

Wow Nintendo really brings out the uh.... SOMETHING in people

It's just the next phase of "console warz!"

My favorite are the people simply posting "Nintendo never learns", as if creating carbon copies of Sony and Microsoft's devices is the only option for making video games.
