MCVUK: PSP 2 – the big E3 surprise?

Publishers significantly ramp up marketing plans for Sony handheld for this Q4

We already have a fair idea what to expect at next month’s E3 – plenty of into about Move, Natal and the 3DS (and Vitality Sensor) for instance – but Sony could perhaps be saving the biggest surprise of all.
MCV has been informed of a significant increase in marketing spend at two key publishers for Q4 2010. At a time when the PSP is languishing in Western markets – and its most recent iteration, the PSPgo, is falling flat – it is being speculated that publishers are laying the ground for an offensive on a brand new iteration of Sony’s handheld.
Another publisher has also told MCV that it is waiting on a specific announcement from the platform holder before it can reveal of its future PSP plans until, though it did allude to the ongoing development of several unnamed titles behind closed doors.
The PSP is currently in its sixth year on the market, and despite having undergone a number of revisions remains largely unchanged from its initial launch.
The exception, of course, is the PSPgo. Sony has never released sales data for the device, though the machine has struggled at retail and the numbers are widely known to be alarmingly low across every major market.

More after the jump...

Weren't there rumors about the PSP-4000? I think that sounds more appropriate than the PSP2 but hey, it's E3.

why would publishers ramp up advertising for a psp revision?

I think the whole PSP brand needs to be restarted, No 'Go' or anything. Just a straight up. PSP 2. Or maybe even a new name for it.

Why would publishers just on board the psp2 at lunch any way, i cant think of any that have been very successful on the platform?

Just scrap the idea of a portable Playstation alltogether, and focus on one platform.
You know, like when you were on top on the world, Sony.
With Nintendo and Apple, there isn't much to be won.

I love the internet's pre-E3 period. It's like everyone can makeup shit and get away with it by labeling 'rumor' on it. :lol

That's a pretty massive stretch of logic. 'Increased third party marketing budgets = PSP2!". If anything it's more likely to relate to 3DS, and Nintendo firming up timing, and global timing, for it.

PSP is one of my favorite pieces of gaming hardware in, like, ever. So I think I'd prefer Sony not listening to this recommendation.

And I either want the PSP2 to support PSP games, or we need a PSP-4000. I want/need to replace my 1000, but I'm not putting up with that 3000 screen.

So Move, Natal, and 3DS are all launching this fall and publishers are increasing their marketing budgets because PSP2 is launching. Seems like sound logic.

You guys love to not read the whole thing, right?

Publishers are ramping up marketing FOR a Sony handheld. It's on the first sentence.

Increased marketing plans for Sony handheld and publishers who can't talk about some games in development until Sony makes an announcement mean that Sony is preparing a new PSP or that they are going to try to revitalize the PSP with a new model or something.

Still skeptical... if it was actually coming this year, I'd think that a lot more info would have leaked out by now. But what do I know?

Yeah, but in the article they're not so specific, they don't make that qualification, so it makes me wonder if the first paragraph bit is an over-eager assumption.

And the article's weird. It says they spoke to two publishers. Then later they say it's info based on 'speculation from a senior industry source'.

So which is it? If it's the latter, what's the speculation about, the reason for a spend increase, or that there will be spend increases at all?

There's a certainly lack of consistency in that article that in context smells like story-concoction. As ever, we'll see at E3 though (or maybe before if PSP Go was anything to go by :P).

we already have a psp2 topic on the front page and this news report is in there
so, you were hiding this important news in a crappy megathread that nobody reads and are now upset that your exclusive little plaything is out in the wild?

Doubt it. God of war new psp game would be on psp2 instead.

Or new God of War is being announced/released before E3 so the announcement of PSP2 does not dampen sales.

BELIEVE.

I almost read that as Marvel Capcom vs UK. :lol

Had a quick scan of the title, thought MvC3 was being announced for psp :lol

And if there's another psp brewing we would have had a leak by now. After all this is Sony we're talking about.

Exactly, just like God of War 2 was released on PS3, not PS2 after PS3 already launched. Oh wait.
...but the PS2 software market in March 2007 is a ways removed from the current PSP software market.

there is no hope of revitalizing the psp. sony NEEDS to put out a successor or they are done in the handheld market.

Yes, we know that.

But Sony makes horrible decisions (PSP Go) so I'm not ruling out the new SKU + marketing push possibility

Once Nintendo ups their handhelds graphics power, whats left?

And a PSP2 wouldnt be a surprise. A surprise would be some kind of unexpected feature. No idea what that could be , though.

Which means there's MORE reason for it to be a PSP2 launch title than a PSP release.

It'd be nice, especially if they had some sort of backwards compatible enhancements, especially with the newer stuff; MGS, Valkyria 2, MHF3, God of War, etc. PSP is still getting a lot of good games but I would like some new hardware all around, handheld wise.

Also, put in that Dual Shock 3 compatibility like the Go has. I want that, and I've almost caved just for it. :lol

Something related... Or unrelated:

wait, for Sony to show the PSP2 they need to know what Nintendo plans on doing then being 'Inspired' by Nintendo first.

what if it's a PSP game that is "PSP2 Enhanced" and those screens weren't bullshots...

How feasible would it be to do something like this? Make one game, release it for both PSP and PSP2, with the only difference being higher graphical fidelity on the newer system?
