I thought it was great.

It was definitely cheesy, and a bit less serious than most other comic book films today, but I actually think that worked in it's favor. It's this charming little throwback of a film that brought back a nostalgia of some of the earlier comic book adaptations like the X-Men cartoon series or Raimi's Spider-Man films. It didn't reach the level of Raimi's films, but it had was pretty solid. I'd say it's a 7/10 but a really fun 7/10.

Apocalypse was a level above Disney Channel Original. Only barely though. I have no idea how anyone can like the movie. Singer needs to go, Jennifer Lawrence needs to go, cheap costumes need to go.

It's insane how the X-MEN franchise is paused is suspended mediocrity. It's as if they've learned nothing from filming any of the movies.

At least we have First Class and X2.

meh. I loved it. The climax left a bit to be desired but i cant remember Singer ever delivering on that front anyway. I just love the way X-Men movies are handled. They are funny but not campy like Marvel movies. They are serious, but not a bore like BvS. They have characters that are interesting and funny without ever cracking jokes like every other Marvel superhero.

Fassbender and James McAvoy killed it once again. Their screen presence is right up there with RDJ, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth. Except that they actually have some good material to work with. Fassbender losing his family like that was brutal to watch and Charles doing his best to help the newbies and appeal to Magneto's good side was wonderful to watch.

I loved the setup to Wolverine's appearance. I actually turned to my wife and said this movie is fucking awesome. Sansa was such a joy to watch. They finally did her character some justice. Singer has no idea what to do with Beast and Mystique, but he loves Nightcrawler and QuickSilver because they had the best scenes in the movie.

I guess people are going through superhero fatigue or something because this was one of the better superhero movies i've seen this year. Deadpool gets absolutely no criticism for its second and third act, and Civil War got away with the same editing and pacing issues BvS got massacred for, while this movie gets criticized for being more of the same. Isnt every Marvel movie more of the same? At least we got some new characters this time around and Apocalypse was an imposing villain.

Civil War was better overall but I really had a lot of fun with Apocalypse. It was very nice seeing Cyclops actually get some room to grow.

Everything about this sounds so awful that it can't be anything but good. What trades/issues do I need to find to experience this for myself?

I spent half the movie wondering who the actor was playing that main villain guy, I kept thinking it was the guy that plays Nick in New Girl.

It wasn't, it was poe from starwars

The core premise of this movie would have driven my twelve-year-old self crazy, but adult life and a generally sour taste from the previous X-Men movies made me ignore it until now.

I enjoyed it, mostly :>

Charles was so adorable with Moira, and Quicksilver killed it.
And that Phoenix power thingy looked really Phoenixlike, at the end.

One of the best superhero movies of the year? That seems like a small mountain to be king of. What, there was Deadpool, Batman v Superman, X-Men, Civil War, and Suicide Squad.

What new characters were there? Jubilee's scenes got cut. The movie centered around Mystique, Xavier, and Magneto again. Nightcrawler (who we've seen before in past films) had a bit role. Wolverine's cameo probably lasted longer than the character development for Psylocke or Angel. New Cyclops and New Jean, I guess. But...these are just younger versions. Considering that the X-Men universe has like a billion fucking characters with powers, these movies are extremely conservative about introducing new characters that stick around. First Class probably had the biggest roster differences because it took place in the 1960s and they wiped that slate clean within that movie, or off camera in the time between it and Days of Future Past.

I don't go into these movies ready to compare them to other films, I try to just take them as what they are. Of course eventually I'm going to think back to other films if something seems familiar. My biggest problem with X-Men: Apocalypse is how superfluous so much of it is. The Wolverine cameo is a nice little easter egg, I guess. But it's something that was clearly inserted into the movie for the commercials. That entire rescue sequence just seemed absolutely pointless because of him. They were trying to establish what Scott,Jean, and Kurt were green but still smart...and yet they still had to rely on Wolverine when it came down to it, even though they didn't even know who he was yet. So their moment to shine was negated by a quick cameo.

And yes, this was more of the same. They've been recycling Magneto's redemption arc over and over and over and over again. How many times do I have to watch Charles try to appeal to Magneto's good side? How many times has that gone bad at the cost of human life? It's fucking ridiculous. Magneto killed a lot of people here...and he strolls off like nothing happened at the end because he decided to help defeat the dude that he partnered up with, at the very last moment. Ummm sure. Apocalypse is worthy of immediate death because he is the bad guy trying to kill millions of people for his radical mutant views. How is that any different from Magneto going bad oh so many times before? Why hasn't the team put him down yet? Because the plot says so.

I honestly don't know what you find so imposing about Apocalypse either. He had grand monologues and was bad for the sake of being bad. He was about as one dimensional as a character could possibly be.

It isn't superhero fatigue, it's mediocre movie fatigue. It wasn't the worst movie of the year or anything but there wasn't anything that stood out to me. It had a cool slow motion scene. I'll say that. Oh wait, we saw that in the last movie too. So this was the same thing but longer. Which sums up this movie. The same but longer. I 'll agree with you on Jean. She got more to do here than other films, which was nice.

Hey Grizzly! I am S0lidSnake from the PS2 Ver. 2 Gamespot forums. Good to see you here.

I thought this was going to be a massive year for Superhero movies. Of course BvS ended up flopping and Civil War didnt do much for me outside of that one amazing airport battle, but these five movies are some of the biggest movies of the year and Apocalypse despite being safe gave me the kind of emotional depth lacking from the other movies. I seriously cant think of any scene in those other movies that was as hard to watch as the forest scene with Magento and his wife and daughter. To me it raised the stakes and did something most superhero movies are scared to do which is actually do something definitive that breaks the character. Yeah, Magneto ended up coming around at the end so it kinda cheapened the death of his daughter but he's an anti-hero. not a villain IMO.

Yes, it's more of the same with Magneto but where else can they take the character really?

Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Jean were the new characters i was talking about. They got some nice origin stories and got to show off their powers. It's hard to juggle so many characters in one movie, but i didnt feel like i was shortchanged. Nightcrawler got the biggest laughs in the theater. Again, i would've taken a better third act more focused on character moments b/w Charles and magneto and the new cast but hey this is an action movie.

Apocalypse was intimidating because he felt impervious. He was also manipulative and felt like he could go anywhere and do anything at any moment. He just gets inside Charles' head and teleports into the Mansion. I thought that was a cool scene. Again the bar has been set so low by Deadpool's villain, doomsday, zemo and enchantress in SS that he wins by default. I also liked his intro in Egypt. Very cool scene that did some decent world building most comic book movies rarely attempt.

Much more intimadating than this guy:

Are you joking? The point of Zemo is that he's a regular guy, completely insignificant to the power of the Avengers and yet he managed to bring them down. Francis was a good villain on account of how easy it was to hate him, dude was a scumbag and it was portrayed very effectively.

Apocalypse is a nonthreatening, 5'2, diminutive clown who acts like a straight-up idiot, like with the nukes in space incident. Dude preaches about taking over the world so he recruits a swordsman and a dude who can swing his wings to hurt people, LOL. All his lines were corny as hell. Half the time I wasn't sure he wasn't a parody.

You said he wasnt intimidating. I pointed out four other villains that were anything but intimidating. Apocalypse had this unpredictability to him that made him a bit more interesting than other comic book villains. i really liked how easily he was able to get all the nuke codes and shoot them into space. That was a great scene whether you like Apocalypse or not.

I thought it was good. Not quite First Class or DoFP, but right under those two. Had a lot great moments in it.

Yeah, i kind of forgot it came out this year. But i do remember how much i hated it.
X-men movies were always on the mediocre side. But apocalypse goes too far. Fox needs new people. Singer has to go.

Because he isn't intimidating. Francis is way more intimidating because of his demeanour and sadistic nature, Zemo was never meant to be intimidating, and Apocalypse had me chuckling every time he spoke. That's the exact opposite of what you want from a villain.

Apocalypse is like Ronan-tier for me. They look similar too, what a coincidence.

I liked the movie, but I will admit that it felt like a non-event.
Sad to see the X-Men relegated to this status, my favorite IP growing up outside of Batman

Someone hasn't seen Suicide Squad.

I'm a bit of an X-Men movie mark, so I loved Apocalypse.
Suicide Squad>>>>>X men Apocalypse. Shitty version of Apocalypse and the only good part of that movie was Fassbender. Pretty much all the performance were bad outside of Quicksilver and nothing notable happened, equally as bad CGI fest ending. At least Suicide Squad had Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Viola Davis.

I found myself not being a fan as I understand that Singer likes to do his own thing and doesn't consider much from the comics but too many choices didn't gel with me. I doubt I will watch the next one if it goes down the Phoenix path again. It's a good arc but they've taken the wrong steps already to deliver on it.
