xbox one took The top-selling console spot For july in the US a.k.a the world

Ms coming across like that mate you always beat at games, he says it doesn't matter and he really doesn't care but when he wins that one off game he screams at the top of his voice like he won the lotto.

Is there any surprise they won this month, fire sales etc with nothing compelling on Sonys hardware that month I'd be shocked if they didn't win and win the next two months with the launch of s. It was never about how bad ms were doing in the USA as it wasn't as bad as everywhere else, they need to work on Europe where they are getting smashed.

Exactly #4theplayers.

Except when it comes to backwards compatibility.

And EA Access.

And console exclusive DLC.

And timed exclusives.

And console cross play.

Or maybe all companies are full of it.

You should not get so riled up. This is how thread derailing starts, some people can't help being console warriors, don't stoop to their level.

Seriously, it's hard to take this crowing after articles like this a few months ago:

Xbox boss Phil Spencer on why sales numbers are not the metric for success

So sales numbers aren't a metric for success, but we hit #1 in the U.S so we'll crow about it like it shows success. What?

It's shameless, but do you really think their marketing department would allow them to ignore that success?

The Microsoft brand has been and will always be about spectacle. That's partly why they've always been so successful with the "Bro" market.

10k difference?
Firesale levels were circa holiday 2014 from what I saw so that's a bit surprising (still had PS4 with a slight edge in my monthly prediction which wasn't smart).

Even if they do value MAU over sales, there's no reason not to take advantage of something like this and release positive press to make your brand look better. It would be stupid not to.

Missed my prediction as I thought Ps4 would come out on top this month, congrats to MS and it's not exactly surprising they're taking a win and making the most of it

July and August is probably a lock for Xbox considering good discounts and Xbox One S.
Expecting September (and rest of the year) to be Sony with a likely drop to $299 in the next couple of weeks?

So the difference was only 10,000 units (171k vs 161k) despite firesale pricing and free games, and 3DS actually won the month.
Perspective.

Genuinely curious why this might happen? I thought Microsoft would get August because of the One S release, but I don't see any big game exclusives that would have tipped the scales.

Well, except MAU doesn't really matter as a comparison, since they can't prove who had more. All we have are sales numbers, and they've gone from downplaying it to trumpeting it.

stores giving away the og xbone to make room for xbone s

Amazon had that price mistake on Prime Day that let people buy multiple XB1 bundles for the price of one.

I got 2 1TB Division bundles plus extra controllers and free R6:S and Forza for $200.

Probably inflated user sell-through by a couple thousand.

And all they needed was a good old fashioned fire sale...

Did Pokémon Go really affect 3DS sales that much? That's great news if so and proves Nintendo's mobile strategy could work.

Thanks for the responses. Difficult to wade through all the fanboy chatter in this thread to get some actual information.

Pikachu brings all the boys to the yard, I guess. And girls. And gets old people to yell at them for being in their yard.

Shame both systems are down YOY, and it's a little sad that with all those deals, bundles and price cuts the XO only managed a 10k lead.

Hopefully the XO S sees better sales than the base model, if only amongst people after a cheap 4K Blu Ray player, the PS4 can get at least a price cut, if not its own slim model as well announced next month, and Nintendo get off their arses and start getting some enthusiasm going for the NX.

With only one out of the big three currently making a truly competent and marketable product so far this gen, and the likely inevitable overall console sales shrinking once it's over, any stagnation anywhere is bad for our hobby right now. Like it or not, I'm at least beginning to see the need behind those upcoming mid gen hardware upgrades.

Still, apparently 3DS getting a shot in the arm from Pokemon Go is a very positive sign. I don't trust Nintendo to be competent enough to pull off the same trick when it tries it with it's own mobile games mind, but at least it proves the strategy can work!

Hats off to MS. For a while now they have had the momentum and it's starting to pay off.

This even before the Xbox One S was released.

Its a weak month overall. We should not be basing these sales on anything definitive.

Well 10k sales ahead is better than nothing I guess. But it took $100 less and plenty of fire sale type promotions to get at that point, so I'm not sure it's a win in any way, especially as PS4 would have easily beaten it in $$$ value.

How long in your opinion has this momentum been happening? Because the fire sale was the only reason they won this month and not down to updates, game releases or anything aside.

The S is really the console that it would have better launched with or at least brought about sooner. It's all too little, too late to make any difference though. Sony will cut again and then they have a more powerful console on the way rather soon, so I'm not sure how much "momentum" MS will have once August is out the way. It could and no doubt will be very short lived.

I guess to put this into perspective, the PS4 sold pretty poorly last week in Japan (around 16k I think) but that was still over 16k more than the Xbox One there.

So this lead over the whole month, following discounts/deals etc was not enough to even cover the defecit of just the last week in Japan where, as stated, PS4 sales were several thousand lower than the current baseline (for various reasons).

I bought a second hand original xbone in July. :D
It seems like a good time to pick the xbone up, imo.

Gears 4 being the main reason.

(I've owned a PS4 since launch too)

They'll definitely win August as well. Maybe September, but they'll lose October due to PSVR and Neo launches (if Neo launches then).

American system sells best in most American month.

Lead system architect of PS4 is American.
PlayStation HQ is now situated in California.
OS is built on-top of FreeBSD (Berkeley).
Tools and profilers mainly developed in the UK and NA etc etc.

Sony is a Japanese company but I'm not sure I would label 'PS4' as a homegrown Japanese system at this point unlike PS1-2-3. :)

While I certainly do think that a PS4 price drop is coming...

I don't think Sony is sweating a 10k month loss. It was a month where the price was $249 for XB1 versus $349 for PS4.

A $100 gap in price resulted in a 10k difference.
MS will thrash them in August with the S, but it'll reverse when Sony launches the Neo (depending on price).

Then it'll reverse when Scorpio is launched.

Makes sense although seems it was close.

The S for mass market is a slim version of what's available now apart from some newer media support which isn't even relevant for majority of likely customers.

Hence no need to defer purchase and people took advantage of the deals. The transition to a slim should overly hurt sales of existing model in run up to launch if price is cut and is was.

August the Slim should produce a "double dip" spike as existing owners trade up particularly the sub-set who are aware it offers a small performance bump. Assuming decent "normal" sales for month plus "double dip" sales on top MS have shot at taking August too.

Then the real fun starts if Neo does launch this year and we finally see how the market reacts to a mid-gen spec boost model. That's the real point of interest.

Somewhat ironic to see MS suddenly interested in sales numbers again but to be fair its a stat for PR so they weren't going to ignore it at just focus on MAU numbers. That said it doesn't seem a huge win and it took some serious discounts so its not exactly the most amazing thing either. But you gotta take the wins you get.

It would have been a disaster if not, with those OG Xbox One clearance sales and a slow sales month in general.

So the difference was only 10,000 units (171k vs 161k) despite firesale pricing and free games, and 3DS actually won the month.
Perspective.

Still a minor disaster to only outsell PS4 by 10k in a month with no real incentive to pick up a PS4 in July.

They'll win the next two months imo maybe that can be celebrated. Only winning by 10k being down yoy with all the sales MS had. I can't see how that can be celebrated that's a disaster.

Something is telling me these type of posts wouldn't be made if the PS4 won again.

Many people (including me) expected PS4 to win due to people preparing for S but now it's "a disaster" for Xbox to win even with that previous case still being true. Funny that there weren't any (from what I remember) replies that questioned so many PS4 > Xbox One predictions in the NPD thread considering it was apparently now obvious that the Xbox One should have won the month.
