That's the point. Gwen Stacy was supposed to show that shit still happens, no matter how good you are, and especially, that you can lose more than one person. It made Peter reluctant to start a relationship, and after all he did and got married and stuff was because he, has a character, grew confident enough to accept the past and look forward. It's actually one of my favorite development in comics, but Disney don't care and it seems that neither do you. Whatever, I'm in for High School Musical with powers anyways.

Which works fine for hundreds of comic issues, not so much for the compressed storytelling of a movie.

And yeah, Ultimate Spider-Man and Raimi movies worked just fine.

This is a characterization in your own head. After Gwen died he hooked up with Mary Jane almost immediately, she broke up with him, he then had a serious relationship with Black Cat, goofed around Deb Whiteman, Marcy Kane, Cissy Ironwood...he still did the same things after Gwen died. Unless your version of Mary Jane didn't exist until they were suddenly married in a publicity stunt to match up with Stan Lee's newspaper...

You don't have any knowledge of Spider-Man. Your version of Mary Jane doesn't exist. Your reading of the comic is faulty and insufficient, but you don't want to think, you just want empty snark at Disney marvel films for not being whatever the fuck DC comic movies are.

For real. I'm kind of embarrassed some people think her red hair is her only interesting quality.

Some people just like the red hair. Like its that simple, there's nothing more to it.

I like MJ having red hair. If she doesn't oh well not the end of the world, just would prefer she would. Just like I would prefer Clark Kent to have black hair over blonde. Not something worth rioting over or anything.

Bruh, we don't need to be reminded that Gwen got fridged so that Peter can learn another life lesson about being a hero.

I don't really care either way but the red hair actually is something that plays into her character in some ways. I can understand why someone would be upset if she didn't have red hair.

I'm sure Zendaya could pull it off flawlessly anyway.

What the fuck? lol.

Head canon or not is what I felt reading my comics back in the day, which were all old comics because they were hard to find here. I remember very well that Peter was all the time caring for her (and rescuing her, because what else were love interests for) it might have been faint or whatever, a kid's mind tend to amplify things, but these adaptations are precisely for that, to amplify what's good from the source. Taking the easier route is disappointing for me, very much so.

Just so you know, I'm a bigger spider-man fan than DC so you can keep your fight inside your head where it belongs.

Neat, hope the movie's good.

I've been reading through all of the Spider-Man comics from the beginning to today and, if fans are trying to hold these up as some kind of strict bible to base the character off of — good luck.

They contradict each other all the time, characters change instantly based on the writer and illustrator and, honestly, they're mostly garbage.

? Nobody is saying that, just that red hair is a her distinctive visual trait. She is arguably the most famous redhead anyone can think of.

lol he was responding to a post that said her red hair was the only notable trait she has

It's her only interesting and stand out physical trait. If not for her red hair no one would recognize MJ.

or i dunno, they state that her name is mary jane in the beginning of the movie and there you go

Is she Hispanic?

Zendaya was born in Oakland, California, the daughter of Claire Marie (Stoermer) and Kazembe Ajamu (born Samuel David Coleman).[5] Her father is African-American, with roots in Arkansas; her mother is white, with German and Scottish ancestry.
Which coincidentally is similar to Sasha Banks who for some reason people also assume she's Hispanic.

Totally fine with this. I could give a shit what the person looks like as long as their personality and relationships with others are done justice.

But man the backlash on this is going to be severe and unbearable

Shocking, but I'm fine with it. I just didn't think they'd go this route for Mary Jane. Having red hair is like the sole notable trait she has
Not at all, she was progressive for her time, she was a confident, strong woman who was portrayed as still lovable but not a lovefool. That part I think can get covered well with Zendaya as that's what she projects too.

MJ being white was never a big part of her character. Sure the red hair is iconic, but her most relevant qualities have always been her sparky attitude and general beauty. As long her personality is aligned with comic book MJ, I'm all for this.

Whoever she is, she won't be worse than the soulless automaton they hired to play Mary Jane in the first few Spider-Man movies.

I don't particularly care about Mary-Jane that much, but I don't think it's too much to ask for a characters ONE defining physical characteristic to be included in the adaptation. Especially when it could have been accomplished with a box of hair-dye.

This shouldn't be a deal breaker though. I dread racists pretending they care a lot about this, so they don't have to admit they're mad she isn't white.

I get that, but I think people now know her for being a redhead more than anythign is what I was saying, especially after the Raimi movies did her so badly and gwen came back into prominence in the Amazing movies

So my wife often has one of the Disney channels on while she sleeps (think it used to be for Phineas & Ferb). In any case, of all the different Disney stars, Zendaya DEFINITELY stood out as being truly talented in front of the camera. Just massive amounts of charisma, and true acting ability when compared to the rest of the lot.

Should make a great MJ.

I know, that was the point, they almost didn't get together, it adds depth to Peter. But maybe I'm asking Disney too much, this will be their 8-13 movie and I suppose that's ok.

Character development and psychological depth? Fuck that! Saccharine teenage romance is better!

hahahahaha dude you haven't even seen ths movie
