We're going to see soon if Sony is willing to eat hardware costs in hopes of sheer numbers on software and services. It would appear they are as best prepared for this market wise as they've ever been.

Pity about the leak. They could have had an ipod-level surprise had the two leaks not occurred. But for such a mass-produced and widely shipped consumer electronics, that's just impractical.

I know the Slim leak. What was the other?

The original rumour of the Neo, which forced Sony to acknowledge it but refused to talk more about. Clearly they were glad that the Slim hadn't been leaked yet, but then it happened too.

7th PS meeting
8th PS Asia conference
13th PS pre TGS conference

Very busy September for Sony.

Well we ARE talking about the coming Christmas season after all. Unlike games, hardware announcements need to occur a bit earlier so people can get the cash together for the holidays. And this is the officially mid-gen update and would be vital to Sony' gaming business going forward, until the far off PS5 release.

I just want to buy that new controller due to this feature alone!

this feature is thread worthy alone!!! All you need is the new controller and any console.....it even works on the older ones. I just want to know when I can buy the new one so I can finally stop plugging in my controller and have it still transmit bluetooth and receive interference

Xbox one has a wired mode and its a god send for when you have a ton of devices in your home. We have 30+ wireless LED's through a hub and shit goes crazy when you mess with the lights lol.

I think their attitude was, "if Apple can do it then we can do it too." But clearly they were wrong ;)

Thanks! I thought I'd missed something new. Lol.

Apple get leaks too. The difference is that Apple use stores that they own, while Sony has no control over the distribution of their hardware after they leave the warehouse.

I've never seen a full unboxing video of a new Mac three weeks before an Apple conference.

Apple don't only sell their products through their own stores either. Also Sony use stores that they own too, even if they're not quite as successful at it.

Both Slim and Neo were impossible to not leak in this day and age. Slim first of all is already in the hands of tons of people because it's release is gonna be like within a week from announcement. When was the last time a slim console didn't leak?

Neo on the other hand you need to inform tons of developers well in advance. Same thing here, there was no way to prevent this from leaking.

I don't think Sony is so clueless that they expected them not to leak. Unboxing videos ect weeks prior is still pretty extreme I admit. The only alternative would have been announcing Slim back at E3 or something but what would be the point?

That is indeed interesting. The Dualshock 4 operate on 2.4GHz I believe which is really messy, occasionally I get weird "sliding" feeling from the controls rather than more direct planted input.

Raising the price of PS4 Plus can allow for leeway in hardware. Still don't see them taking a loss unless it is like launch where one game and Plus subscription puts them in the green.

I think they point they were trying to make is that this is a full unboxing of a retail package. Wasn't that iPhone stolen from a bar?

^ that leak was much worse, because stolen prototype.

but leaked PS4 Slim is just a retail unit (as I understand, Slim is in full production now) – http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2016/08/24/ps4-slims-are-popping-up-all-over-ebay

Another says that the PS4 Slims in their possession were supposed to go to the Middle East, going so far as to send me a picture of the small print stating that the consoles were licensed for sale in both the Middle East and Africa. I was sceptical of that, given that the boxes are clearly EU models, but I've been informed that Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe does cover the Middle East. So it's more than possible that that's where these particular consoles were headed.

I don't think there will be a big focus on older titles that aren't in the public eye anymore. Mayble only in a brief mention.

The one I'm questioning the most is Battlefield 1. With Microsoft having marketing rights on it, I'm not sure they'd be very happy to have it shown on stage for the world to see how awesome it runs on a Neo.

Horizon or GoW

I'll have to agree with Uncharted 4 or something else that's either already out or coming out soon. Sony would want something that showcases why you should buy a NEO on day one if it's out this year. That being said, I'll be incredibly surprised if we don't see some kind of showcase for future titles as well.

The more Sony gets people into their ecosystem, buying their games, building friends lists, buying digital goods, the harder time Ms is going to have to court people to their console. Especially since ps5 should carry everything over. No more restarts.

Sony has a whole year by themselves with the Neo.

I say Sony should bite the bullet, release slim for 199. Yeah, they'll suffer in hardware profits, but they'll make up for it with playstation users who will be more likely to stick to PS5, PS5 Neo, ps6, etc.

I think Uncharted 4 is the 100% obvious candidate to show first in Neo mode.

I agree. I don't think they will show off the base game though, I think they will reveal the single-player DLC and showcase that. That way it is familiar enough for people to see improvements but it is brand new content which will help it be more exciting than seeing the same base game that has been out for months.

Time will tell here, but I think I'm with you on this. Sony is investing heavily in Playstation as a service-focused brand rather than just a piece of hardware right now. I think the slim would be the perfect chance for them to push non-gaming features like Playstation Vue and their Spotify music partnership at an entry-level price.

Sony could make the PS4 slim as cheap as humanly possible (I'm thinking $249 at the lowest but $200 would be quite the statement) and market it as your living room entertainment hub. This would let them push NEO as the hardcore alternative to the regular Playstation 4 without really compromising either.

I'm extremely interested in the September event just to see how on earth they'll choose to market things.

When the Neo really gets the rumoured specs, do you think PS3 emulation would be possible?

Sony still can't get PS3 emulation to work with their PS Now service. They ended up setting up miniaturised PS3 server farms. Just give up. By the time you can emulate PS3, you would have stopped caring about it.

I feel like this could go either way. Sony invested a ton of money into Gaikai in order to get PS3 games playable via PSNow. If you had asked this question a year or two ago, I would say that there was no chance in the world of them making PS3 games playable outside of this.

However, with PSNow spreading to more and more platforms (PC, TV, Blu Ray players) I think formal PS3 emulation on PS4 could be a good move for them. If nothing else it would certainly keep the "hardcore" gaming fans happy and more likely to stay with Playstation. That being said, I think PSNow would need to be insanely successful on platforms outside of PS4 for this to even be remotely considered. So... don't bet on it.
