Bioshock: PS4 vs Xbox One vs PC Original Analysis and Frame-Rate Test

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NakbSQZ2pwg

Bioshock Demastered.

Edit:

- 1080p.
- 60fps when you're not doing anything, drops and screen tearing otherwise.
- 60fps physics.
- Improved textures.
- No texture filtering.
- Lower quality effects.
- Lower quality audio.
- Missing graphics and audio options on the PC version.
- Forced mouse acceleration.
- Bugs.

So original PC version with physics mod is still the definitive version. Kinda a shame.

Do we know what AA the consoles versions use? hard to tell on YT.

physics mod is only for the first game too, I was looking forward to the remastered because they fixed it for 2

kind of a waste honestly since they did spend the development time into making new textures

Does the game still have the parallax mapping of the original, Dark10x?

BTW the differences in water rendering which the video discusses around 5:05- 5:30 of the video might be as a result of the game no longer supporting transparency lighting in the traditional sense. Maybe? Bioshock 1 interestingly enough has actually pervertex lit particles. So point lights and spotlights could actually affect the colour of transparencies. The remaster seems to not have that, maybe?

at least we still can access the original PC versions for the GOAT versions. I was worried that they'd get removed once the remasters went up on steam.

Yeah, there's likely more gold to uncover here which I didn't have time to examine due to time constraints. I need to check.

I suspect you might be onto something with the lighting.

Why would they take that out I wonder?

Ah so seems 2 remaster might be the version to go for in that case. I plan to play through all the games again soon so good to know this stuff.

My girlfriend wants to play Bioshock and I initially recommended getting the PS4 version. I may just suggest playing the original 360 version since I still have that.

No idea! Just a hunch or a guess, as I have no idea why they would otherwise make the water looks so different.

NP, makes sense considering the breadth and length of these games and the release schedules!

Other than that I have no idea why the water would look different. I could just download them both and check it out... I guess.

This remaster is profoundly disappointing. BioShock is a game that lives and dies by its atmosphere. If you get those little details wrong, you fucked up, plain and simple.

I was really looking forward to this, too. It's one of my favorite games of all time.

Does the collection at least have the best version of Infinity on consoles? That's the only one I haven't played. (I don't have a PC capable of running modern games.)

This is so baffling.

Why dump all that work into new assets when the game looks fine with minor tweaks (resolution, widescreen, physics refresh rate)? I don't understand.

I remember when Ken Levine had said that Bioshock 1 ran off a heavily modified Unreal 2.5 engine. This was around the time UE 3 was becoming a dominant game engine for the PS360 era of games.

Crazy to think that it would be that hard to improve the image quality based off a very simplistic game engine (in respect to other game engines)

Played about 6 hours of it on my PS4 yesterday and my personal experience has been great. Performance feels solid and yea I suppose some things like texture filtering are worse (and some different textures & lighting might not be to your tastes) but overall the image quality's good, haven't noticed any lower quality effects and the audio sounds mostly the same to me, not really worse. There's some new lighting, new geometry and things like NPCs and enemies look better.

Anyway, I only played the original on my 360 so this feels like a nice step up for me. Can't speak for the PC version, that seems to have more issues. The way some here are acting like this is some massive travesty is strange.

MIght've been a lot of home developed stuff that didn't get implemented in later iterations of the engine and the Remastered devs didn't bother to attempt to replicate those effects.

What engine is the remastered version running on?

Are there version differences?

One of the games I was most excited about this year, even though it was just a remaster collection. Fuck you, Blind Squirrel and 2K.

I want to say the 360 and PS3 versions don't have the stuttering present in the PC, XBONE, and PS4 versions.

I mean versions specific for PS4? any small patches? As what shinobi says doesn't match up what's in this video.
That's maybe something to consider. My first impressions were much more positive until I started looking back at the original. It was a "wait a minute here" kinda moment when you suddenly realize that things are looking quite right. If it's been a decade since you last played it , you might not notice.

Its Shinobi. I like the guy and he brings the scoops, but if you threatened his dog with a gun and said, Shinobi my man im a kill your puppy unless you say something bad about a Playstation version of a game, he'll sit there and watch you shoot.

I was obsessed with the original on 360. Played the demo like 50 times and went through the full game several times.

That being said, I've noticed the changes immediately. I remember being floored by how detailed the steps looked when you first arrive at the lighthouse, which has now been reduced to a blurry pancake. The scratchy noises in the audio recordings, the awesome ambient sounds....all gone. It's good that you gave credit for the positive work that was put into this, but some of these changes completely change the feel of the game. That, on top of the control stick issues, lack of AF and some textures not appearing where they should...it's terrible. Hoping for some serious patching.
