Giant Bomb PSVR stream | It's always Summer in PlayStation VR Nation

In the Gamespot video review they didn't have any issues with head tracking, but noted when they were past about 8 feet from the camera the view started to awkwardly shift in and out. Which sounds familiar watching the GB stream, and clearly they're at that point or beyond. Not sure if they tried being closer, as I only watched the first hour and a half. When Brad switched in he still looked pretty far from the camera also.

They moved closer and were still having the same problems. But the fact that you can reproduce it by moving farther away from the camera might mean the lights on the headset are defective. Maybe too dim?

Well shyt preorder canceled? that doesn't sound good at all for early adopters.

While sites have reported something similar to what GB experienced, others have shown no problems whatsoever. Should be interesting once this thing is out in the wild.

It's up in the air at the moment imo.

They tried being closer (and measured distances). I didn't catch all of it but pretty sure they got as close as 6 ft and still were experiencing the issues?

Hmm, OK then. Strange, I wonder what the issue is? They have 2 headsets, they both can't be faulty surely, and they've tried them in different room environments. Just odd when others are completely fine. Could be the PS camera.

I think the lesson here is to not pre-order anything ever.

Anticipation and hype are an important part of product enjoyment for many people, it's like telling someone they shouldn't need foreplay to enjoy sex.

Sure, it's sort of stupid, and is closer to stockholm syndrome than romance at this point, but it's a real part of consumerism.

wat

If you're having foreplay sex, you're immediately going to get sex afterwards. Comparing a preorder to foreplay is really bad. Comparing foreplay to preordering, a better example would be if you were having foreplay with a mannequin, only to find out after the foreplay that it is in fact, a mannequin.

People who pre-ordered Oculus sure were bummed out and angry about their situation too. Being in the zeitgeist and first in line isn't as beneficial as putting it off and waiting on things to straighten out.

It's not impossible. If the faulty ones are randomly distributed then they could easily have gotten 2 defective units. Out of the 3 headsets we know CBS got 1 seems to be functioning properly. Also did they ever switch the headsets around? Brad's seemed to be slightly better then Jeff's with the world pulsing.

Okay so assuming that both headsets were messed up what caused the move controllers to act the same way? its software, no doubt in my mind.

Edit: The only common thread is the camera.

Having several faulty headsets out of tens of headsets sent for reviews still qualifies as an issue. And they're not proven to be faulty until Sony says so.

They weren't acting the same way. The Move controllers were drifting or jittering, both common issues reported in many reviews. The headset's POV was moving back and forth in a consistent rhythm; that wasn't the issue with the controllers and hardly anybody else has reported it.

Jeff seemed to think it was unlikely to be defective hardware fwiw. The camera, I'd believe, however

Have to wonder if it was even worth it for them to wake up super early, deal with technical issues, and have a tiny fraction of the games lineup when they could have waited for next week and done a more polished and comprehensive show.

so ALL these people on GAF and other forums who have tried it at BestBuy, not have the same issues...... and all the sudden because Jeff says that it doesn't work.

I'm sorry, but I'd trust the majority of the audience. Heck I'd trust myself after I've it on a few occasions.

I'm curious to see if the majority of the owners who buy it, say it works fine........ well then would Jeff be called out?

Jeff is basically saying it is unplayable... that it's a hardware issue. Then EVERY OWNER WHO GETS ONE will most likely complain...and there should be a class action suit coming.... Right?

I doubt it... and many will just move on forget the hyper-hole Jeff just said today.

Commander.

Sir?

OPEN THE HYPER-HOLE.

BUT SIR-

JUST DO IT.

Aye, sir.

Time will tell what happened I suppose, as more people get their hands on units. Even the GB staff themselves said they didn't have these issues at trade shows.

The move controllers were mildly inaccurate from many people. Some worse then others that's a problem with the light based tracking. However the world breathing in and out suggests the system can't get a good lock on the headset itself.

There are also some who are really crazy into VR and won't just leave one of the bigger VR threads right now as it is.
People who listened to any GOTY podcast of GB should know they are a pretty arbitrary group with arbitrary reasonings and are surprised when people get serious about anything they say. But there are people who will not yield to what they think is misinformation. I sure didn't care for some blunders on the bombcast in the past, but people should learn to not get too hung up and what a few individuals have to say on the internet. Right now some people are just coming over from the PSVR review thread and just updating people.
I won't knock those posters for it.

People who get way to serious about what they say are the ones ruining threads like this. People take things way to personally.

Honest question: do we have Astroturfers in this thread? Some of these posts are crazy

Edit -

Wtf is this

If by astroturfers you mean people who are actually getting paid to shill for a multinational corporation then probably not. Paid employees would almost certainly be savvier about hiding the fact that they are shilling.

I really have no idea why they couldn't have waited till at least 8am PST.

This is how they always do launch stuff

You could say why not wait on a console launch stream until there are better games out

Did they have this problem when they did that Quicklook EX of SuperHyperCube? I don't recall Jeff saying anything about jitter in that one.

No, they specifically mentioned that during the stream today. They also talked about how they had good experiences in general at trade shows, etc. So it wasn't something they had experience before to this extent it seems.

It depends how widespread it is and just how bad it is. If GB's problems are common it's a huge deal since that would make almost everyone sick with minutes of using it. That is something you can absolutely not have in a VR device.

The white girl speaks english in the demo doesn't she? So they could at least do some of that one.

Agreed. It really concerns me and I hope it's an isolated problem, but only time will tell.

More than half the reviews in the review thread talk about tracking issues. What's unique to Giant Bomb's issues is the breathing view with the world moving in and out and it was the main cause of Jeff's nausea. I haven't seen that specifically reported in many, or any, other places and it was by far the biggest issue so thankfully it also seems the rarest. Hopefully they're able to find a cause soon and it isn't a widespread issue.

My bad on that. I only noticed the four from earlier, but I haven't caught up on the other reviews as of late. I really hope there is a way for them to fix the problem through a firmware update.

Thanks! I wasn't able to watch the entire stream so I'm glad to hear them mention that. Hopefully it's just a hardware or environment issue and this isn't a widespread problem when it officially launches.

Seems like there are two things they (and many others) constantly forget when talking about VR.

1. Occlusion is a thing that is one of the biggest difference between all of these headsets, and with one camera you are going to lose hand tracking if you turn around with Ouclus and PSVR (or if you just use one lighthouse).

2. Phone headsets do not have positional tracking. So when they mentioned Superhyper Cube working on phones. No it would not.

So he clearly didn't go and try Gamespot's they are right beside each other.

They've been streaming since the early AM and the VR tracking issues literally made him feel sick. Are you really surprised he didn't go interrupt Gamespot's stream to immediately investigate the problem? They'll have another stream next week.

Also, he seemed to be somewhat sick during the Bombcast (he was coughing a lot), so being up that early might've been extra rough. I wonder if he wasn't feeling well, if that contributed to his nausea.

Yeah true. Some devs were saying they were more prone to getting sick when they were hydrated.

There were issues with the vive and Oculus yes, but most everyone who got a unit for review didn't have any weird issues. People having wand issues or tracking stuff was not a common occurrence

Of maybe 20? Retail units that are out at reviewers, it seems like there's about 5-6 with issues?

That's something to cause some concern Id think.

Brad was 7 feet 10 inches from the camera according to drew. Jeff was at 6 feet and moved to 4 and a half I believe and still had issues

Brad said at home he was anywhere from 3-7 feet and he had all sorts of problems no matter what he did
