Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

How does Switch Splatoon look compared to Wii-U Splatoon? Exactly the same fidelity?

Nothing to glean as far as that from what little we've seen. Only proper trailers for the games themselves and specs for the system will help us with that.

Is there anything stopping Nintendo from having a home console only version of the Nintendo Switch? ....

Would any of you want a home console version of the Nintendo Switch like myself and do you think Nintendo would think of offering it? If the traditional Switch releases at $350, but the home console only version releases at $250 I would be there day one.

This would require Nintendo to manufacture a different console, which I imagine wouldn't be cheap on their part (They save certain component costs of course, but they'd have to fab them separately). They've got to split components and what not, and then likewise figure out how much of each to meet market demand. You've then got advertising confusion between the consoles too; something you'd think Nintendo would be keenly aware of and attempting to avoid this time around.

I'd say there's zero chance, at least not in the near term. Maybe upon some future iteration years down the line, but not until the console process a success and shows and untapped market for an at-home-only version.

I don't see which demographics they are trying to catch with the detachable controllers.

The demographics of people who dont want to buy an additionnal 60€ controller when they've already shelled 400€ for the console.

If the controllers were not detachable like on the gamepad, you'll have to buy a pro controller to play when it's docked. There you just detach the two parts and reattach them to a center piece that will probably be sold with the dock. (I hope)
Or you play with one in each hand like with wiimote an nunchuck. (could be comfortable or not, will have to test to be sure)

Many buyers won't buy a console if they discover there are hidden additional costs like expensive memory cards (hello vita) or cameras and wands (hi, PSVR) that add 100€ or more to the price of the unit.

This is a very interesting concept. The main worry is battery life, though. I mean, unless the screen has a massive(and I mean MASSIVE) battery, this will probably die within 3-4 hours. For some people, that might be enough.

Don't want to be a party pooper but I'm really worried at the video on 0:39. The framerate while the guy is playing BOTW on the park looks atrocious :( Like 10 fps or maybe less. Hope it was just the video and that the final product can run smoothly : /

That last sentence might be the one that makes me keep the wiiu. Maybe things like bayo 2 will stay behind.
I imagine Bayo 2 is something that probably will carry over, since that's something they did invest money into that they clearly didn't get a lot back from but would also be an easy enough port.

If we're just going to go on the line of Platinum games, even Wonderful 101 is probably a likely port, while Starfox is probably the one that is stuck where it is.

How does Switch Splatoon look compared to Wii-U Splatoon? Exactly the same fidelity?

Can't tell from a uber-compressed Youtube trailer showing footage that may or may not be close to what will be released on the game console, but it looked on par with WiiU's Splatoon graphics (perhaps a bit more polys) and way sharper (900p or 1080p on TV)

Just pulled out of my ass, though.

They literally combined almost everything that was good about the last two consoles and still managed to make a sleek design. Impressed all around.

Never bought a Wii U and don't play my 3DS too much but as a Vita and remote play player I kinda dig the Switch a lot.

I was thinking though, that's a lot of batteries to charge right? The Switch tablet, the two control bits that attach and can be used as separate controllers and maybe even the part that connects them together? 3DS and GamePad batteries sucked so hopefully Nintendo have worked on that.

Based on absolutely nothing, my kneejerk reaction to Mario Maker 3DS is that it's gimped because they didn't want to undercut the Switch port. But you may be right.

I kind of lean that way too. I mean if they couldn't get it to work with sharing the same levels as the Wii U version, they could still have put in online sharing for just the 3DS version and levels created in it.

It's a system that might make sense for the Japanese market, but over here I'm not positive. It doesn't compete with tablets/phones and it doesn't compete with home consoles. It's in between.

What's going to save this system and make it sell is the lineup. To play these types of games on a portable might be a big win. Everything else, design wise, is just kind of puzzling.

The next mainline Pokemon game will be on it. Same goes for Smash. Same goes for Monster Hunter. Same goes for Splatoon. Same goes for 3D Mario.

I like it. Now I don't have to spend hundreds of dollars for a portable just for a handful of games. Now I get my console and portable in one set. I wonder if they will have a bundle for those who just want the portable stuff and I do wonder what they will do about the DS and 3DS games.

I hope the TV doesn't turn off when you used the screen control since I actually like having a map always on in the Wii U, especially for games like Zelda, Xenoblade X, and Splatoon. Although I have faith that isn't the case since Nintendo have shown they won't throw the baby out with the bath water since people just wanted them to utterly abandon the ideas the Wii U brought.

First impressions, the system is like what Nintendo wanted the Wii U to be, but they jump the curve too soon and the technology wasn't really there. It almost makes the Wii U look like a prototype. Which is fine, learn from you failures and take the best from it.

Problem is, the wiiu is the biggest failure in nintendo's history outside of the virtual boy. Im not sure doubling down on it is the best strategy for the masses.

For ME though, its everything I ever wanted and March cant come soon enough.

My thread got locked. Ill try here.

I dont tknow that i will need it anymore once Switch releases. My assumption is that anything good on it will have spruced up ports on the new Switch, making my WiiU obsolete quickly. Even if i threw it in my bedroom, isnt that the point of the Switch? To be in every room?

Are you keeping your WiiU? Selling it? Gifting it?

Doubt everything will be ported plus I use it for wii games so I'm keeping mine

My apologies if this has already been asked and answered, but is there any backwards compatibility with 3DS, since both systems use cartridges?
Most probably not. The carts are visible, and they have a very different connector (definitively serial, btw, when I guess DS/3DS is partly parallel... in fact, it's really close to SD cards ?)

He's speaking about the joy-con

Here's another...SNES style!

Looks fake, I'll wait till E3 for the real reveal.

Joking aside...why did that UBI head say this console is meant for families? This trailer showed nothing of sort.

One thing for sure is this finally a 1080p ninty console right?

Cuz 720p is what kept me from playing the wiiu more beside my ps4 ect

I'm excited, sure but the logic side of my brain is speaking to me too....

Looks like a Wii U mini or revision
Cartridges, size limitations?
Hardware battery life
Screen quality
Ergonomics of controllers, etc.
Seems a bit of a gimick. Looks cool I'll give it that.

This looks great. I feel like I haven't gotten my money's worth out of the past few Nintendo systems, but with all first party focused on one machine, I honestly feel like this will probably be worth it even without much third party support.

I think a bunch of the scenarios from the trailer are really unlikely, but it doesn't really matter, I'll buy one as soon as I can.

I know rumours were that it had a lcd screen, but there's been no confirmation right?

Is there any chance of an oled screen lol

I'm also totally cool with 720p, it means we'll get better performance, what would be the point of a Qhd screen? Wow high res but even worse performance.

It looks cool, and I understand why the concept needs to be done, but I don't want to pay for a portable or a screen; I have a TV. I hope the dock has guts in it and this can be a standalone system, but it looks like everything is in the screen unit itself.

Was hoping for a legit home console, not a handheld that has a docking station and weird ass controllers. I am in the minority for this thread though, so simply must not be for me. Not looking to lug around yet another digital device.

He swiss army knife functionality isn't a selling point for me. Show me the games. Show me the sales on your store. Show me the depth of your catalogue.

If the controllers aren't comfortable, people will have to buy the Pro controller anyway.

Just comes accross as an underpowered console that switches into an oversized portable. Find its design kinda not interesting either.

With nothing protecting the screen for travel you will need some kind of case or something.

Be interesting to see how this sells but im not sure who there target will be with this. I doubt it will be able to replace peoples tablets / laptops so its another large portable device to carry on top.

I think they would have been better off served with a better designed portable that simply hooks up to the telly when needed rather than this detachable stuff.

Feels a bit like the vita all over again trying to sell to a market that barely exists (i say this as someone who loved his vita when my son was just a baby). Its advantage is its nintendo fanbase of course. It will sell to tr people wanting those exclusives. But i wouldn't be surprised if in places like the US it people almosy always left it in console mode and places like japan always in portable.

Also that advert was cheesy as fuck and the dock is bordering on ugly.

Going over some blogs and Twitter accounts, impressions are really, really mixed for this thing. Based on who you are, it's either heralding in a return to form for Nintendo or it's a more powerful Wii U and a less portable 3DS all-in-one destined to fail.

Handheld and Console software combined is THE selling point for me here. I expect nothing from the Western 3rd parties. Can only be positively surprised that way. But japanese 3rd parties? With the possibility of Sony not announcing a new handheld? My gawd... Will be there Day One.

Besides the AMD/console truthers, I'm glad this announcement also dismantled the inane conspiracy theory that Nintendo knew they couldn't make the March 2017 date, but lied to shareholders back in April because, um, publicly traded companies love having to delay crucial products and downgrade their FY forecasts, I guess?

People who just thought it'd be delayed without any deceit on Nintendo's part, I can understand, though. I had my doubts myself.

I was already sold based on leaks, but they did a great job here. Really solid branding with that click and all, which feels weird to say, but it was satisfying. I just hope the controllers feel good to use and the specs are decent.

I would also really like some cool colors out of the gate, but...
