Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

My prediction: price will be $299 with Mario Kart 8+ packed in. Maybe $280ish if they want to push it low.

They really should if they can't hit $249.99. $299.99 just hits that "$300 barrier" that makes it a tad less impulse purchase friendly than even $279.99 would. People see things at the $X99.99 level and there mind rounds it up that extra sent. If it's below that, even if way closer to the next 100 people tend to round down and think "it's only $200 bucks" or "it's only $200 some bucks."

There will be no access to Android games whatsoever

It would be up to developers to port their Android or NVidia Shield games.

Metal Gear Rising and Borderlands are probably the 2 most popular Shield games

Two things, why do you think no Google Playstore access whatsoever? Nvidia shield has it.

Second, how does metal gear rising, borderlands, resident evil run on Nvidia?

It's encouraging that the press release says "a look at the lineup of games currently in development" and not "a look at games lined up for the system's launch window."

It was incredibly frustrating that Nintendo refused to show us a broader picture of what the Wii U had in development until two months AFTER the system released. I'd bet that most system sales at launch are due to what's coming out in the future, rather than what's necessarily there on day one.

Assuming Zelda is there at launch, however, consumers might have both short and long term prospects with this new hardware.

In 2012, the Wii U's event - revealing price, launch date, bundles, etc - took place on September 13th. As soon as it was over, GameStop began taking preorders. (I remember because I was stuck at work at the time, annoyed at the lack of heads-up time given by Nintendo.)

So if this happens on the evening of the 12th, I'm guessing that preorders will begin on the morning of the 13th?

A bit later than I'd like, but hey at least the date has been set. Can't wait to see what's cooking at Nintendo.

I would certainly hope so, considering public demos open to the world immediately afterwards.

Press Conference prediction

Yes! I'm all about speculation like this, great stuff.

I'd predict the Skylanders-esque amiibo game that is inevitably coming will be a spiritual successor of sorts to Nintendoland, and that Project Giant Robot will become a fully fledged title for the Switch launch.

I hope Nintendo sees the opportunity in advertising themselves as the only major console with free online multiplayer, that could be very useful.

Nvidia actually ported most of the big Shield only titles themselves, they have an internal dev team set up for it called Nvidia Lightspeed Studio. They ported Doom 3 BFG, Metal Gear Rising, Resident Evil 5, Half-Life 2/Ep 1-2 and Portal for example.

Now that Shield as a product line might be ending I wonder if they'd start licensing and publishing games for Switch?

So, I am just going to use this as a spot to dump a bunch of random thoughts about Nintendo and the Switch.

As much of a multi-pronged disaster as the Wii U was, there has been some positive creative destruction coming out of it. Even a couple genuinely good ideas. Optimistically/speculatively, the Switch offers a good chance to bring all of this together.

In the years following the Wii/DS phenomenon, we've seen the following from Nintendo.

  • Embraced digital distribution
  • Clever, is modest, efforts to use technology to make gaming more social (Street Pass and Miiverse)
  • White-knighting projects with niche but dedicated audiences (Bayo2, possibly BG&E2)
  • Growing indie offerings, along with "Nindie" eshop promotion
  • Enormously popular recent offerings for Mario Kart and Smash
  • Fire Emblem revival
  • Successful launch of Amiibos
  • Continued expansion of the virtual console
  • Openness to mobile, along with great choices for mobile offerings
  • The cultivation of two new dedicated communities in Splatoon and Mario Maker
  • Breath of the Wild dominating E3, and highlighting a more open and modern approach to game design
  • The Pokemon Go phenomenon
  • NES Classic (and the better apparent emulation involved)

Those all vary in importance, but it's the last few that are particularly important. The Switch basically appears to be an attempt to consolidate the Wii U, 3DS, Vita and Shield markets, while also expanding that into iPad territory and reclaiming turf previously held by lapsed Nintendo fans and hard core gamers who have lost interest in Nintendo's platforms. By doing so, Nintendo concedes having the home/handheld twin markets. This is a loss, but potentially replaced by having stronger sales in their flagpole platform, a strong mobile presence, and new revenue streams such as Amiibo and licencing through the Universal deal, etc.

It's probably the right set of choices, given how challenging their situation is. At the end of the day, though, Nintendo still has to deal with a market where mobile completely dominates the casual space, and Sony/MS/PC dominates the hard core space. It's a thread-the-needle approach to winning some middle ground, and I can see it being a disaster to replicating near-Wii sales to anywhere in between.

The way expectations for the Switch are developing, based on Nintendo's recent actions along with rumors for the platform, are basically my ideal gaming platform. Expedited production from Nintendo's core teams? A modern reimagining of the classic formulas? A great platform for indies and popular cross platform games? Standout titles from partners (DQ11, and also assuming the BG&E2 stuff pans out)? yes, please

That said, I have no idea whether my preferences say anything about whether the Switch will be successful.

Wish List:

Nintendo games

I hope to see modern gameplay updates that stay true to classic series origin, lower budget iterations like Link Between Worlds, and a focus on competitive communities. So, Mario, Xenoblade, and perhaps Metroid, Pikmin, or Eternal Darkness gets the Breath of the Wild Treatment. Something on the lower end, cute games like Wooly World, one-offs like Kid Icarus: Uprising, and original concepts like Pushmo/Boxboy!/Rusty keep coming. And in addition to the "complete" version of Smash, Mario Kart, Mario Maker, and Splatoon, we see a major emphasis on competitive Pokemon following Sun & Moon.

3rd party games
Here, I hope to see an emphasis on recruiting games which have crossover appeal between Nintendo's main audience. Dragon Quest 11 and BG&E2 are perfect examples. Sonic seems inevitable. I think Bayo3 or Sunset Overdrive 2 would also be good choices though that is just wishful thinking on my part. Maybe Yooka Laylee gets a special shout-out? I've also always thought Supergiant's games are a great fit for Nintendo's audience.

In addition I think the reveal of Skyrim was pretty interesting because the 3DS had such a big market for dungeon crawlers and other time sinks. Would be awesome to see: Rocket League, Hearthstone, Spelunky, Isaac, Don't Starve, XCOM, Stardew Valley, or FTL.

Misc software
Main requests are for 1) better initial roll out than the Wii U VC did, and 2) an HBO app to go along with Netflix, Amazon and Youtube.

We'll probably hear a lot about the next gen of Miiverse and Street Pass.

They can get away with unveiling console stuff like price and OS two months out, but I think they need to talk about the launch titles before then. I understand that November/December are not ideal for big news, but assuming they've got a handful of quality titles for launch, they should give those at least at a little bit of time to incubate. I suspect some of their partners at Ubi, EA, or Bethesda feel the same way.

Unless all they've got are ports and a couple of exclusive Nintendo games (2D Mario/Wii Sports-like), but I'm hoping that's not the case.

Not sure but any 1 of the following 3 will do:

Wonderful 102
Bayonetta 3
SMT x FE sequel or another ATLUS/Nintendo collaboration

My guess would be Beyond Good and Evil 2 being partially funded by Nintendo as a NS exclusive, much like Bayonetta was.

The platinum stuff wasn't announced during the 2013 january direct.

I'm hoping against hope for the new Monolithsoft game, unlikely as that may be.

Hopefully. NoA and pre-orders don't seem to mix very well these days.

If you're in EU or JP you should be fine.

Oh man, that's not too far away. This is the first time I am considering a Nintendo console as a primary one since the N64. The PS4 Pro is still on my wishlist though. I am so sorry, wallet-san but we seem to be unable to afford a girlfriend any time soon.

Two things, why do you think no Google Playstore access whatsoever? Nvidia shield has it.

Second, how does metal gear rising, borderlands, resident evil run on Nvidia?

Because Nintendo would want people to buy games from their ecosystem so they can make money. Also Android is full of shovel ware games as well as easy to pirate for with emulators. By Nintendo releasing Google Playstore they won't benefit much only Google will benefit.

I'm not sure how those games run on NVIDIA Shield TV as I haven't played them myself but I have heard majority of the ports run better than 360 and PS3.

Metal Gear Rising port would be beneficial on Switch as it may appeal to the Japanese launch buyers.

I'm still going to stand by a modified version of the Google play store. Similar to what Amazon has. It make it far easier for companies like Netflix, hbo, Hulu, and Espn.

So I'm standing by my prediction that we see either A) access to Google play store like with Nvidia Shield, B) we see a modified version of the store like on Amazon.

For me here in Sweden hearing Americans will probably have to wait until January to preorder is so weird, lol. I've had my preorder in through my local online retailer of choice since September last year, when we basically knew nothing.

Atleast we can stop guessing about any dates now. Just wait and see!

This is the best takeaway from this announcement. Now we can be simply impatient instead of impatient and over anxious.

I like the timing, though. It's gonna be two full months of hype between the January event and the March release, isn't it?

There is no chance in hell Nintendo is going to launch and support their own app store or run a forked version of Android like amazon.

The switch will run an evolution of the eshop. Things will continue to go through nintendo, not be open.

I'm sure there will be tools to allow easy porting of mobile software, but supporting ANY kind of version of Android is pointless because there is no way they will open up that level of control.

While I agree with you on your points. There is something about being the device that everyone touches for all consumption. Becoming that in teens and young
peoples minds may prove beneficial. Nintendo maybe possibly trying to do that. Become the iPod or iPad of media consumption.

Lol would you like to do a account bet. Person who is wrong is banned from GAF

Lol would you like to do a account bet. Person who is wrong is banned from GAF

I'm not sure why we would bet. We don't win anything. We don't have a dog in this fight. So who really cares. Being banned isn't bad either. Look I don't play many games. I'm older now, I play a few games with my nephews and my kids.

I have no insider knowledge. I'm just saying a modified App store may prove to be beneficial as it would allow alot of content to be in the system quickly.

I view Neogaf as the wine tasters of the tech and media internet. I enjoy talking and reading everyone's thoughts, they come from all corners of the globe. But if I was banned it would be fine. I would be indifferent.

I'm curious though cause I can't possibly imagine the Nvidia Shield tv running Xbone ports that even at a lower res and some effects missing. I just can't imagine Battlefield or Doom running on Switch without streaming. We will find out soon enough.

They are cutting it kinda close, no? I mean its coming out in March. I fear its going to get delayed until 2017 holiday.

Why would they have just announced the March 2017 date and then in January say, sorry, we lied. It's all too close. Pretty sure they know they're ready.

Anyways, a live event? Might have to take the day off so I can take it all in.

It'll be an on stage conference like what Microsoft and Sony does for e3.

But certain people seemed so convinced that conferences are dying and really are bad marketing compared to prerec videos. But then again, they also said there'd never be Nintendo mobile games or hybrids...

Could be this one:
