Glad to see this getting the attention it deserves.
Since launch, DOOM locked up my GOTY, its focus on mirror-sheen gameplay straight missing from most modern shooters. It blew me away, and took me back to the white knuckle rides of the old shooters. The only blemish was its atrocious multiplayer, but the campaign was worth the price tag alone. DOOM is the old guard, showing that its breed of shooter still has bite.
And yet, Titanfall 2 swooped in at the 11th hour and takes the GOTY crown. Its refreshingly brisk campaign is the modern breed of shooters at their absolute best. It's campaign has more narrative weight and honest heart than it has any right to have, without descending into masturbatory cutscenes ala modern COD. It's gameplay-first-focus melds with its narrative in a way I haven't enjoyed since Half-life 2. It's inventive, without being overly complicated, in the best possible ways: each wrinkle it introduces augments the shooting and mobility in ways that keep you focused, challenged, and constantly enjoying new things, from start to finish. And once its said and done, it's brilliant multiplayer cements its status. Hats off to Respawn. Knocked it out of the park.
