Isn't shaming those people part of the reason why Trump has done so well? It creates a them and us divide, with side more emboldened and less likely to engage in sensible discourse.
I have engaged in sensible discourse with people who have intolerant views of minorities and changed their thoughts luckily. But there are some problems with that:
1. I cannot expect a minority to have the patience of having sensible discourse with someone who thinks less of him or her. I am priviliged of being a white looking, straight male that can educate people.
2. There are bigots who are aware of their views and actually entrench themselves in them, despite sensible discourse.
The divide will always be there, the best thing we can hope is to shut the racists who didn't want to be educated up, and hope that the next generation is more tolerant.
